Hi,
I was wondering how do you increase the file descriptors in Linux? I am
using redhat 5.2 with V2.0.36 kernel. What is happening is that I am running
a server with over 300 vws's and apache craps out saying it has run out of
file descriptors :(
Any help muchly appreciated!!

Subject: Kernel 2.2.x & large memories...
Date: Thu, 22 Apr 1999 13:43:20 +0200
Folks,
Okay, I've read "The Wonderful World of Linux 2.2" (at
<http://linuxtoday.com/stories/296.html>) and "Linux kernel 2.2 explained"
(at <http://linuxtoday.com/stories/2291.html>), but neither of these
articles has answered any real questions of mine.
In particular, I understand that kernel 2.0.x has some problems with
dealing correctly with memory in excess of 256MB. I understand that this
has been addressed in kernel 2.2.x, but I wonder if someone can run down
all the issues with regards to having large amounts of memory in Linux,
especially with regards to quantities as large as 2GB or more....
Also, what about SMP (I'm primarily concerned about 2-way and 4-way,
not the larger and much more difficult 8-way or even 16-way)? I
understand that some changes have been made here, but how does 2.0.x deal
with this versus 2.2.x? And are there any outstanding issues that I might
need to be aware of?
Thanks! Oh, and as busy as this newsgroup is, I'd appreciate it if
you would at least carbon-copy me by e-mail on any responses you might
have regarding this subject.

I was there last night, and got a number of errors. When I got through,
there was a section of the page dedicated to the success of the recent
upgrade to the servers.
Oops ... ;-(
The irony of it is that I am researching the availability, penetration,
and perception of Apache on Linux ... ;-)
Go figure.

You also have to swap out a bunch of other stuff; mainly, kerneld (the
daemon that loads modules) has gone away and kmod has replaced it. RH has a
very good HOWTO on their site for the kernel upgrade.
You also have to copy System.map from /usr/src/linux to /boot and (maybe)
change some links after a kernel compile; this is undocumented in the
HOWTOs.
Fish around in /lib/modules and /boot, look at the links and where they
point, and make sure it all makes sense WRT /etc/lilo.conf.

You don't say what distro you're using. RH by default compiles about 150K
of useless drivers into the kernel (useless because they're duplicates -
there something like 7 mouse drivers compiled it). By eliminating every
unnecessary driver, and compiling everything else as a module, you can
reduce the kernel significantly. I got my 2.0.36 kernel down to something
like 320K, which seems to be the lower limit for a real, functioning kernel.

With kppp, start by removing everything from /etc/ppp. For example,
rename the directory /etc/ppp to ppp.x and mkdir a new /etc/ppp. A less
brutal method is to comment out stuff in /etc/ppp/options, bit by bit -
start with "lock" and "auth", if you have them.

You're looking for the samba suite. It runs on almost any linux distro. Look
up samba.org. The current version (2.0.3) does not _officially_ support PDC
functions. No version (not even the development branch) can act as a BDC yet.
The setup I run consists of an NT 4.0 PDC, w/ a linux (rh 5.2) box w/ samba
2.0.3. The linux box handles all the network functions (file server, printer
server, firewall and internet connection, DNS, DHCP, etc) and the NT server
simply provides authentication for the Win32 boxes on the net.

/dev/cdrom shouldn't be anything more than a symbolic link to the actual

ls -l /dev/cdrom will show which device it points to, is it correct?

Try dropping the -t auto on the last one. Linux will autodetect ext2, FAT,

I am using redhat 5.1 with kernel 2.2.5
I am not experienced at all, I use linux for only 3 months, so be precize
please.
My manual tells me to work like this:
make dep clean zImage
make modules modules_install
make zlilo
Why not at once? -->
make dep clean zImage modules modules_install zlilo
Why is de kernel placed in / and not in /boot ???

Nope, the only time that I have had Netscape freeze was when I was doing
something tricky with the address book. However, a bus error occurs every
few days. If the same thing happens on 4 different platforms, you can bet
that it is a bug.

Hmmm, my experience was the opposite, I couldn't compile a thing under
slack, but went to Debian 2 and everything started to work fine. I think
Slackwares lack of threads libraries was the problem (I could have compiled
linuxthreads and thread safe X and got slack runing, but installing Debian
was easier).

I make use of an AMD 486dx4-100 with 32mb ram and 4mb S3 Virge/dx graphical
card.
Booting in suse 6.0 (kernel 2.2.5) takes about 1 minute! In Redhat 5.1 (kernel
2.2.5) it takes only 30 seconds. Why that enormous difference?
Also the installation of suse takes much more time. Especially at your first
boot. Are there in suse scripts running in the background?

Either recompile the kernel with vfat compiled in or see if the module is
around (/lib/modules/2.0.36/fs/vfat.o), if it is, type /sbin/modprobe vfat
If that works, then you need to configure RedHat to load the module at
startup using that silly tool of theirs.

That may be correct if you are confusing KDE with KWM, but saying Afterstep
has as much functionality as KDE is simply wrong.
KDE is not a window manager: it includes a application launcher, a file
manager, a web browser, text editors, terminal emulators, games, mail
clients, IRC programs, and so on.
On the other hand, Afterstep draws little things around applications and some
square thing with pictures on the side of the screen (just kidding ;-)
