How did they get there? These are from OpenSSL.

That will have no effect. LD_LIBRARY_PATH is what affects dynamic
library finding, and /usr/lib is going to be searched anyway. However,
if you haven't rebooted the system since adding them you might neeed to
run:
/sbin/ldconfig -v
as root.

Another alternative would be to download and install sysstat, which includes a

First the current problem, then what leads up to it.
When I startx, the Xserver starts, but all I get is three term windows and a
clock. The resolution changes work, and the color's fine, so I don't think
it's the device settings in XF86Config. The desktop doesn't come up.
Now when I've installed this version on other workstations it automatically
set to come up with Gnome. The only thing I've done different on this
machine, is I had to upgrade the 3.3.X XFree86 to 4.0.2, then to 4.0.3 so I
can get support for the Prophet II MX video card.
On a side note, it may not be an issue because it looks like the video
card's set fine, but while the XFree86 documentation shows "nv" drivers for
various GeForce cards, the xf86config setup only has NVIDIA listed, and its
compliment driver as "GEFORCE." Though in the config file it does list the
driver as "nv". So it may not be a problem.
Anyway, why is XWindows only coming up with 3 term windows, a clock, and
nothing else? I can left-mouse click and it somes up with a menu that only
has options for refresh, close, and other window specific options.
Thanks for any help!!!

Subject: HELP! Can't install RH7.1 (Anaconda bombed)
Date: Wed, 23 May 2001 09:31:11 -0400
I'm trying a fresh install on my new Compaq Presario 5000 series PC
AMD 1GHz
384MB PC100 RAM
Voodoo 5 AGP graphics card
Intel eepro 10/100 ethernet
30GB UDMA hard drive
I booted my RH7.1 CD and no matter what option I chose (graphical, text,
expert install) they all bombed at Anaconda. The error message looks like
this:
--- error msg ---
Runnin anaconda - please wait...
install exited abnormally -- received signal 11
sending termination signals...done
sending kill signals...done
disabling swap...
unmounting filesystems...
/proc/bus/usb
/mnt/runtime
/mnt/source umount failed ()
/dev/pts
/proc
You may safely reboot your system
--- error msg ---
I've successfully installed W2k on this machine (plus the Windows ME
coming with the box), so hardware problems should've been ruled out.
Any suggestions on what to do next? Any 'alternative' install method that
doesn't require running Anaconda? (I read from RH support website RH7.0
used to have various anaconda problems - but it's RH7.1 I'm trying to
install)
Thank you SO MUCH!

Try to figure out what is wrong -
1 - try some other mp3 player - does it work?
2 - reinstall xmms - did that fix the problem?
3 - recompile xmms from source tarball or src rpm - did that fix the
problem?
You probably upgraded some library that xmmms is depending on. In my
experience, recompiling to the exact libraries that you are using
usually fixes that sort of problem.

Subject: LILO and Operating System Missing
Date: Wed, 23 May 2001 09:29:23 -0500
I have WinME installed on /dev/hda1, and Linux on /dev/hdb1.
I set up the install the first time to accidently install LILO onto /hda1
instead of /hdb1. No biggie, I just had to type "dos" at the LILO: prompt to
boot up WinME.
However, I had to reinstall Linux, and put LILO on /hdb1 and start from
floppy.
Now when I boot up w/o the floppy, after the POST I get only "LI" of "LILO:"
and it stalls. With the floppy in I get the whole LILO: and it boots to
Linux fine, but if I try to type dos, it says partition doesn't exist.
During setup with Disk Druid, I made no changes to the FAT partitions.
Any ideas?
IF I have to reinstall WinME, it's no big deal. My WinME OS is partioned off
on a seperate partition from the other FAT drive, so nothing important
should be hurt. (Again, I didn't make any changes to the FAT drive.)
My followup question then is if I have to reinstall WinME back onto drive a,
will it change Linux on the drive b at all? I'm doubting it, since I have a
boot floppy for it.
And a last question, I tried to edit the lilo.conf (sp?) file that contains
what OS options to boot too, and while /etc (?) has it, I mounted and ls'ed
the floppy and there's nothing there. How can I edit it on the floppy to
make sure the "dos" aprtition is an option?
Thanks!!!

Hi,
I am having console keyboard problems. I am running Red Hat 6.2. I shut
down my machine to add additional memory and then rebooted. Upon reboot
I was able to enter the bios, so the keyboard was working fine at that
point. I made no changes in the bios. The booted up fine, with no error
messages on the screen. However, once the system was up, the keyboard no
longer worked. I am able to get into the machine via ssh. I checked the
logs and there were no error messages or bott-time failures listed in
either boot.log or messages. I have tried using different keyboards, but
none of them work. I don't believe that it is a hardware problem as the
keyboard worked fine before the reboot and at boot time to access the
bios. The only thing that changed between shutdown and startup was the
addition of memory. Any help or pointers you can provide would be much
appreciated.
TIA,
Matt

Thanks to both of you. Apparently, unmounting and then redoing the
'mke2fs' command obliterates the previous /dev/ram1. I guess my
earlier glitches resulted from my exceeding the 4MB limit; I chose to
continue after the mke2fs size warning (quoted below). How does one go
about creating a ramdisk larger than 4MB?? I can't find the

It sounds like you're not getting the window manager you expected.
Do 'ps wux' and see what's running. I'm guessing that your X startup files
are not the way they usually are. Check ~/.xinitrc.

Go to Bugzilla on the RedHat web site and look at the discussion
for Bug 37812. This refers to an interrupt conflict on irq 12
involving the PS/2 mouse and the PCMCIA controller on Winbook
XL laptops. The interesting point is that in this case, once
pcmcia is run, it claims irq 12 and keeps it at the hardware
level even if pcmcia is stopped. In console mode, as long
as gpm is not running there is not problem. But when you start
X, the interrupt conflict comes out and keyboard and mouse,
which share a controller, freeze. Probably something is claiming
irq 12 that shouldn't be. Try lspci -vv to find out what.
This sort of thing seems like a minor endemic problem in 2.4.X
kernels.

As far as I recall, the maximum size of a ramdisk under the 2.2 kernels
is (by default) 16MB, and a ramdisk expands to this size when you ask
it to by writing to it.

Hi! Thanks!
Yeah, someone else told me /root/.xinitrc may need to be fixed. (I'm logging
in as root thus ~/ = /root)
I was given the example it must contain:
exec gnome-session
Is that all it should contain? If I want it to run KDE instead, what should
I put there?
I have a working Linux box here at work, and it's running KDE just fine. I
looked for an .xinitrc and it doesn't have one. WHy might that be?
Thanks for replying!!
Greatly appreciated!

Oh, and one other question, how will "ps wux" help? I tried it on my working
Linux box and it comes up with (among a lot of other things)
[startx]
[xinit]
/etc/X11/X :0 -auth /root/.Xauthority
kwm
and so on. What's this supposed to telle me? I looked at the .Xauthority,
but it's all machine code (or rather a bunch of random ASCII symbols.)
I will give a looksee for .xinitrc when I get home to the non-working box.
But again, if that file doesn't exist, do I just make it and use the one
line?
Thanks!

I believe that setting the time via 'date' and then doing a
'hwclock --systohc' should write the time to the hardware clock.
I never actually tried that, though, since Debian synchronizes the clocks
automatically during the shutdown process.
