After running:
#rpm --rebuilddb
the new RPM 3.0 seems to be running correctly EXCEPT that while in the
Xwindow GUI I cannot launch the package management utility from the control
panel button. I see there are a couple of options for this command [--rcfile
<file>] [--dbpath <dir>] but I'm not sure how to use them (I'm new to linux,
obviously). Anyone know how to fix this?

if you are using RH edit the file .wm_style in your home directory to
control which window manager is started by startx.

Easier that that: convert will recognize file types from the extension,
so just: 'convert myfile.bmp myfile.gif' will work.

(And, yes, I use convert to annoy people, since it's amazingly cool and
supports a huge variety of formats. People with multithousand dollar
video machines and they get stuck when given a jpeg. :))

: You could set up ppp between the two machines using a couple of reserved
: IP addresses. Then you could use NFS or rcp to copy files between the
: machines.

Here is what I did exactly.

On one machine--call it the server--I typed

   pppd -detach crtscts lock 10.0.0.1:10.0.0.2 /dev/cua1 38400 local &

That assumes you have pppd, which probably you do. The local (server)
IP address is 10.0.0.1, and the remote IP address is 10.0.0.2.
These are within the allowable range for LANs. Check out 'man pppd'
for detailed info on the options. (Also note: maybe you should use
/dev/ttyS1 instead, but that's how I got it to work on mine.)
You can check if pppd is running by typing 'ps' on the server
machine. Then you'll see it among the other processes.
Next, on the other machine--call it the client--you type

pppd -detach crtscts lock /dev/cua1 38400 local &

That is, the same thing minus the IP addresses. The client machine
can now just ask the server machine for the addresses, so they
both know who's who. Again, check on the client machine with 'ps'
to see if it's up and running (maybe check the server again, too,
just in case..). That's it! Now, from the client machine,

   ftp 10.0.0.1

You need to have a username on the server, though. Probably can't
immediately login as root (though that can be arranged). Then
the rest is like normal ftp. Woohoo! :) --Scott

You can be XY and appear physically female, or XX and appear
physically male, in fact, there are a number of disorders that can
cause this, but in either case you will be infertile.

When you switch kernels are you recompiling the module? Maybe you're
linking the printk function from 2.2.5 and trying to run it on a 2.2.1
kernel.

Thank you for your useful comments. (Not.)

At ALS, the implications that Miner made in his keynote presentation
was that Oracle developers were going to be contributing significant
improvements particularly to filesystem support to do things like
"really raw" partitions.

It is not evident that this has been followed up by actual patches
that have gone into the kernel, and there seems to be little evidence
of any contributions other than the release of Oracle's own
proprietary software.

This is an interesting and fairly valuable approach.

Add to this:
- Install the system.
- Do stuff that has the potential to stress the system to the point of
  breaking. This includes things like:
  - Upgrading LIBC from 5.2.26 (or similar) to GLIBC 2.1
  - Upgrading GCC from 2.7.2 (or similar) to a "bleeding edge" EGCS
(which is very soon to become officially GCC)
  - Sysadmin stuff like configuring printers, mounting disks via NFS,
  ...

Try to make sure the system works reasonably well after these
upgrades, but be willing to have it break totally to the point of
  requiring reinstallation.

- Make sure you've got some separate partitions for things like /home
and /usr/local so that you can reinstall without being forced to
disturb "your stuff." The process of reinstalling will highlight this
issue.

This process of 'testing to the point of destruction' can allow you to
learn quite a lot quite quickly.

(Or, if it's too much for you, it may be extremely frustrating... If
that proves the case, this may at least establish some boundaries of
what you should and should not try to do...)

Leslie,
I moved the top taskbar to the bottom, and I hid the bottom
toolbar (or whatever it's called). When you hide the toolbar,
some icons such as the "K" transfer to the taskbar.
Also select small-size, and auto-hide for the taskbar.
Bingo you have one tiny bar along the bottom, which
hardly ever gets in the way.
I think two bars top and bottom is messy, and the KDE
developers should rethink it.

Barry Kauler
P.S. KDE is fantastic. Corel has chosen it for their suite, and I
reckon it will become THE Linux standard.
