Why do that? I don't know how different "Corel Linux" is from Debian,
but on Debian, you should be able to type:

apt-get install xemacs21

You're missing the dependence of the mode on the type of file you create.
If you create a text file (by echo "blah" > file.test, for example) you
will have permissions 666. If you compile an executable, you will get 777.

If you want to have a shell script (which is a text file) executable, you
have to make it that specifically (i.e., chmod 777 shell.script.test).

Why don't you just install the Debian package? Corel includes only a small
subset of Debian, which as thousands of packages, including xemacs.

Thanks all, for the quick replies. If I want to install a basic "Editor"
version of Xemacs21, which packages will I need from the Debian site? I'm
guessing this is the minimum:-
xemacs21-nomule_21.1.10-4.deb
xemacs21-support_21.1.10-4.deb
libc6_2.0.7.19981211-6.3_i386.deb

For starters, I want just Editing/Debug functionality (w/o Mule etc)

I'm just starting out with Debian Linux so thanks for bearing with my
newbie questions patiently.

The only thing is that Lilo is still on the the MBS.

Gack! So the first thing you should do is run, don't walk, and
install the latest version of the gimp-print driver (which runs under
Ghostscript or directly in the GIMP as you prefer). It produces *way*
better output than the uniprint driver, plus has exactly the color
tuning "knobs" you want. There's no formal color management or
mapping as such yet, but at least the output is fairly good as is and
the knobs work usefully.

See http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/

I had the same thing with RH 6.1 and upwards. No-one could convince me
that I *needed* it, so I commented out the "auth" line in
/etc/inetd.conf and I don't have the processes running anymore. I know
from the discussions on this n/g that inetd has been replaced in RH
7.0, so I guess you need to hack with the /etc/xinetd stuff to stop it
from being spawned.

Again - other people are welcome to disagree - I'm not convinced that
it is required.

However the use made of that bandwidth varies
greatly with time. I've been doing my connecting between
about 5:30 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. generally, and the available
bandwidth to me is much better than it is after say 9 a.m.
when all the internet cafes in town are on-line. Around
5 p.m. when the boats have all returned from day trips,
the bandwidth available is terrible (all the backpackers
are using the connections - that is the only time I might
get a busy tone from the ISP).

A lot of web pages use TrueType fonts. You probably need to configure your
X server
to use tt fonts instead of bitmap fonts (which don't scale well) . An
article describing how
to do this just appeared on www.freeos.com.

OOOOOH Strike that! I hadn't my coffee yet. /dev/pen1 points to /dev/ttyS0.

Security. "root" should only be used for maintenance work, and therefor
only needs binaries placed in special directories which are _not_
world writeable. Otherwise, you could inadvertently be trapped
by running a binary, say, "/foo/bar/passwd" instead of "/usr/bin/passwd"
and therefor run a trojan or a simple shell script
that's harvesting passwords and emailing them out (to just name
the more obvious risks).

(This all assumes you've GOT the compiler installed, of course.)

g++ is most likely the command you want. 'ld' if you want to use
a linker, separately. gcc is still preferred w/ straight C.

g++ -c -o foo.o foo.cc
would try to compile foo.cc into the object file foo.o, without
  linking (due to the -c).

g++ -o foo foo.cc bar.cc baz.o
would try to compile foo.cc and bar.cc, and link them with
baz.o and any default libraries into an executable called foo.

g++ -ansi -pedantic -Wall -O3 -o foo foo.cc bar.cc baz.o \
    -I/tmp/baz/include -L/tmp/baz/lib -lbaz -lm

  would:
-ansi Check that it's ANSI C
-pedantic Be really nitpicky 'bout it
-Wall Warn you about possibly dodgy code
-O3 Allow a good level of optimizations (but forget
                         about using a debugger...)
-o foo send final output to a file 'foo'
     foo.cc compile a source file 'foo.cc'
     bar.cc compile a source file 'bar.cc'
baz.o link in object file 'baz.o'
-I/tmp/baz/include Tell the preprocessor to look there for
                          #include'd files
-L/tmp/baz/lib Tell the linker to look there for -l'd
                         libraries
-lbaz Link with library 'baz', named libbaz.so,
                         or libbaz.a
-lm Ditto, libm.so being a standard math library

It'll preprocess, compile, and link.

Read the info page (likely, 'info g++' and 'info gcc' will both
be useful -- g++ uses gcc, after all) for details. There are
hordes of options, notably -I and -L (which allow you to add
directories where g++ will look for #includes and -lib(raries)
respectively); and -l (ala -lm, -lg++, etc., which specify
libraries for linking). And -Wall, and -ansi, and...

If you're going to do any amount of coding at all, also look into
'make', and get yourself a decent Makefile template -- it's much
nicer to simply type 'make' and get a sane rebuild than redoing
gcc invocations frequently. Fewer keystrokes and less
typo-prone.

Try gFTP. I don't like it though, seems a little weird to use. I use
ncftp, being command line you wouldn't like that though.

Modify them by removing them (that won't hurt the file that it
pointed at)
Create them by

ln -s full_path_to_file_I_have-already
name_and_place_I_want_a_symlink

Echoing Martin Bock, I have been very happy with IglooFTP
