For a completely secure way to backup your entire system, use find to generate
list of files, then pipe the list to cpio as illustrated in this script I use
for full backup to my jaz drive:

===================================================

echo Unmounting Windows partitions, cdrom, floppy . . .
dropwin
unload cdrom floppy
load jaz
cd /
find . ! -path "./jaz*" ! -path "./proc*" ! -path "./sortwork*" -print | \
     tee usr/local/backups/l990317.txt | \
     tee /jaz/l990317.txt | \
     cpio -oBa --format=crc > /jaz/l990317.cpio
getwin

===================================================

The following can be used subsequently for partial backups of all files in
last day:

===================================================

echo Unmounting Windows partitions, cdrom, floppy . . .
dropwin
unload cdrom floppy
load jaz
cd /
find . ! -path "./jaz*" ! -path "./proc*" ! -path "./sortwork*" -mtime -1 \
     -print | tee /usr/local/backups/lp990318.txt | \
     tee /jaz/lp990318.txt | \
     cpio -oBa --format=crc > /jaz/lp990318.cpio
getwin

===================================================

Here is what I use to restore the entire system from scratch, which of course
assumes you have another unix system up and going that can mount the
backup/restore device (in my case as /jaz) as well as all necessary partitions
under /OLDROOT:

===================================================

mke2fs /dev/hdc1 # /
mke2fs /dev/hdc5 # /extradmin
mke2fs /dev/hdc6 # /programs
mke2fs /dev/hdc7 # /datafiles
# mke2fs /dev/hdc7 # /sortwork
mount /OLDROOT
mkdir /OLDROOT/extradmin
mount /OLDROOT/extradmin
mkdir /OLDROOT/programs
mount /OLDROOT/programs
mkdir /OLDROOT/datafiles
mount /OLDROOT/datafiles
# mkdir /OLDROOT/sortwork
# mount /OLDROOT/sortwork
load jaz
cd /OLDROOT
cpio -iBvmud < /jaz/l990317.cpio
mkdir /OLDROOT/proc
mkdir /OLDROOT/sortwork
mkdir /OLDROOT/jaz
ln -s /OLDROOT/boot /
ln -s /OLDROOT/vmlinuz* /
lilo -C /OLDROOT/extradmin/etc/lilo.conf

===================================================

You'd change/add the names of all partions to the ones applying to your
system, and possibly the kernel, boot directory and lilo.conf. On my system,
the above script has been used several times to successfully restore
everything to completely blank disks.

Finaly, for a simple restore of selected files, use something like:

===================================================

load jaz
# cd /
cpio -iBvmud "etc/X11/Xresources*" < /jaz/l990314.cpio

===================================================

Good luck!

If you are using GNU make, check the info pages in emacs. Open emacs
and type C-h i (the Control-h key then the i key for the info pages).
There are great help pages on make there. If info is installed you
can also run info from the command line. type 'info'.

I have a USR 56K modem and running RedHat 5.2. I've read that I should
use PPP in combination with chat. Now, I can make the modem work with
any program (minicom, dip), except chat (is that Murphy again!).

Since I really don't know much about that program, I don't know what
could possibly go wrong. What is different in chat than in other
programs? What is device that chat is trying to connect? I made
/dev/modem, which is link to /dev/cua1.
When I start chat with script which looks like following:

    "" AT
    OK AT...

I just never get any answer from the modem (I tried other things too,
like ATZ, different initialization strings, all things that work fine
with other programs).

If anybody knows what could be the problem, please let me know!
Thanks.

Windows NT is great OS. However it can not be used as a web server. May
be there are some things it can be used for, web service is definitely
not one of them.
We are running a relatively small web server under NT (no more than 40
sim. connections) and it sure can handle the load (well, I guess web
server for DOS (provided there is such a weird thing) could do that on a
PII with SCSI drives and 128Mb RAM)
But what do you know -- we put one bad perl script in the cgi-bin and
every
time perl crashes (or actually exits relatively gracefully with out of
memory warning) the whole damn networking layer dies and server needs to
be rebooted...

boy, was that offtopic? ;)

Subject: rcp bug? Some silly experimentation
Date: 27 Apr 1999 22:42:53 -0400

A while back, I posted a message stating that I couldn't rcp a 2GB
file from solo (a laptop computer) to interloper (a PPro 200). Both
are running SuSE 6.0 with the 2.0.36 kernel.

Today, I got nfs setup and working. Interloper is the nfs server and
is mounted to /interloper on solo. I performed the following
commands:

david@solo:/interloper/home/david/tmp > cat /dev/zero > zero
cat: write error: Invalid argument
david@solo:/interloper/home/david/tmp > ls -l
total 2105376
-rw-r--r-- 1 david users 2147482624 Apr 27 20:39 zero
david@solo:/interloper/home/david/tmp > rm zero
david@solo:/interloper/home/david/tmp > time cat /dev/zero > zero
cat: write error: Invalid argument

real 11m3.494s
user 0m1.160s
sys 1m52.190s
david@solo:/interloper/home/david/tmp > time cp zero ~/tmp/

real 63m50.375s
user 0m1.190s
sys 2m21.920s

The write error that cat spits out is the file hitting the 2GB limit.
I think the time difference from the creation of the file from
/dev/zero and the copy can be explained away be disk io limitations on
each of the machines, particularly solo. Clearly the cpu usage is
minimal. Both machines are connected via 100bt ethernet and a 100bt
hub. All NICs are 3COM and so is the hub.

The history of this exploration of moving large files between machines
goes like this. I discover that ftp times out when moving large
files. I enable rcp (and rsh) from solo to interloper, but not the
other way around. This works for a while. Then I find that moving
really large files locks up the network, forcing me to remove and
reinsert the NIC on solo to get networking back. Also, I find that I
can't conviniently rcp a huge number of little files. So I now have
nfs set up.

I admit that I am doing unusual things, but rcp and ftp should have
worked. I am glad that nfs does. I hope the day comes when nfs works
from linux to any other nfs client/server. Or maybe a better file
sharing protocol will come along.

In case anyone missed the question, Is there a known bug in rcp for
copying very large files? Can anyone reproduce it (rcp a 2GB file)?
Where is the proper place to report this bug? The man page does not
say. Of course there is always the posiblity that there is a problem
with my setup.

Hiya,

Does anyone know anything about an Alloy APT-40/Q Model 500 tape drive? I've
recently got hold of one - I know its old, probably slow and also of low
capacity; how low, I don't know. It takes 3M DC2120 cartridges, and plugs
into the floppy interface.

I have tried the ftape driver with no success - I either get ftape say no
tape drive found (if I try /dev/rft0), or both the floppy and tape drive
active activity lights switch on with /dev/rft1, implying some form of
conflict between the FD and the tape. The tape drive has been plugged in
in the correct place on the cable (ie, the other side of the twist to the
floppy drive :)

Kernel is 2.0.35.

Here is the dump from syslog for tar tvf /dev/rft0:

There are many ways to do this. One is to never, ever

But anyways. Here is a good solution.
Create an executable (chmod u+x d2u) file called d2u,
with the following contents

tr -d '\r' < $1 > temp
mv temp $1

Then, when you want to unixify a dos file, you type

# d2u dosfile

Voila!

Another approach is to use, say, Perl. In d2u, put

#!/usr/bin/perl
s/\r//

Yet another approach is to use the Emacs operating system. ;)
Type the following sequence:

<ESC>-%<ENTER>
Query replace: <CTRL>-q 015<ENTER>

!

Of course, vi probably has a single keystroke--on the homerow--
which does it...but I wouldn't know...

Well, with X, 'minimize' is usually 'iconify'. Most window managers (at
least in their default config) don't have a minimize button: usually a
toggle for maximum.

You're probably hitting the 'iconify' button, and it's doing what it's
supposed to.

To change a window size, with most window managers, that's just a matter
of grabbing the edge of the window (the cursor will change as you're
over the spot) and pushing or pulling it into shape.

Yep, that's what it is.

This is a feature of XFree, though I find it annoying as sin. Look at
/etc/XF86Config and you'll see a line like:

    Virtual 1280 1024

Comment it out. (Okay, so I'm paranoid and don't like deleting
things.)

When you restart X, the virtualness will go away. (Your window may have
'virtual desktops', but that's less confusing to programs than lying to
them about how big your screen really is.) X will tell applications
that your screen is as big as the best resolution it knows how to do on
your hardware.

try useing a guest account to see if that works, also try setting permission
to 777, also build the binaries from source, you need to anyways to set machine
password encryption.

How did you get printing to work, I have to things to work, spooling errors on mac
side, or
no file on linux side. Either way no printing. Never see a printjob in que.
If I copy a file to the printer over appletalk interface it prints.
same for lpr, just not from remote mac machine.

Okay,
Boot from your Redhat CD. Answer the questions until you get to the disk
partitioning bit. Use disk druid to delete your Linux partitions. Go onto
the next screen...and, now that it's written the changes, reset your
computer. Put your Windows 95 boot disk and run, in DOD
FDISK /mbr
Reboot. Then install Windows
