I know this is a bleedin stupid answer, but does it have to be netscape
that does the beepin? You can get all kinds of commands to act upon
receiving new mail, 'xbuffy' being one of them.

Yes. On most distributions, the Netatalk configuration files go in the
/etc/atalk directory. You can find Netatalk documentation on the web at:

http://www.umich.edu/~rsug/netatalk/
http://thehamptons.com/anders/netatalk/

If you need more help, there are a (few) books that cover Netatalk to a
greater or lesser extent. One of these is my own _Linux: Networking for
Your Office_ (see http://www.rodsbooks.com/network/ for a table of
contents).

As to your specific problem, I suspect that you've got an invalid
interface listed in the /etc/atalk/atalkd.conf file, but I'm not positive
of that.

I'm trying to set up vmware for Win98 as a guest OS, using the rawdisk
method. Win98 is on /dev/hda1, and the MBR is on /dev/hda0. When I
attemp to Power On, lilo writes just 'L' to the screen, and then I get
the following message:

Attempt to read 1 sector(s) starting at sector 6044173. This is outside
the allowed range for raw disk '/home/jerry/vmware/win98/win98.hda'.

Can anyone tell me what's wrong, and how to correct it?

This ought to be covered in a faq. It is definitely covered in the lilo
documentation. Lilo is not psychic. It need to know what devices to
boot! Therefore, it needs to read from the linux drive that stuff is
stored on!

Trying to run vmware I get this message:

   reJoyceII:~$ vmware
vmware: error in loading shared libraries
   /usr/X11R6/lib/libXp.so.6: undefined symbol: _Xsetlocale

Having read the troubleshooting on the vmware-site, I think it's a
glibc-problem. My libXp.so.6 is quite old and statically linked,
probably not
with the requiered glibc-libs.

What can I do about this? Probably I will have to upgrade libXp to a
glibc-linked version. Does it mean all my X-libs need upgrading? Do I
need to
upgrade my whole Xfree if I do this (I'd rather not!). What's the best
way to
obtain new X-libs?

And if you have time left: is it advisable to turn my system over to
glibc at
the moment? I have the impression all this glibc-stuff is in some sort
of
beta-stage!? Would it totally replace other c-libs?

I am having a strange problem with my virtual terminals. Every now and
then (it's happened twice), my virtual terminals 1-6 get completely
garbled. That is, when I hit Alt-F1 through Alt-F6, my screen is filled
with some remnant of what is on my X display (which is running on VT 7).
I can still type commands blindly (and the screen changes, but it is
still very unreadable), but I cannot view any text at all. So far, the
only way I have been able to fix it is to <GASP> reboot. Is there any
way to force my VTs to return to their normal text mode?
I'm running Red Hat Linux 6.1 (XFree86 3.3.5). The same thing happened
with Red Hat 5.2.
Thanks in advance.

>Does Linux support IDE zip/jazz drivers?

ZIP drives are supported in all their formats; IDE/ATAPI internal drives,
SCSI internal and external drives, and parallel-port external drives.
This has been true for at least a year and a half. JAZ drives are always
SCSI as far as I know, and as such, they're supported like any other SCSI
disk.

Kernel 2.2.5 had some problems with ZIP drives; these problems were fixed
a long time ago. Kernel 2.2.5 shipped with RedHat 6.0 and SuSE 6.1,
probably others... but you will want something more recent anyway.

Some people have reported problems with very old ZIP drives that are IDE
but not ATAPI. These older drives report their geometry as 512/16/24 (or
something--the 512 is the telltale sign), while newer drives are 96/64/32.
Reads and writes work fine with older drives, but you might have trouble
ejecting the disk.

Don't Linus Torvalds and Alan Cox both use some egcs-1.1.* flavor? And
people are working on making sure that it will compile with the latest

If you _must_ do this at compile time, you can pass the "-rpath" flag
to ld(1); see its info pages.

At runtime, you can do this by editing /etc/ld.so.conf or by setting
the LD_LIBRARY_PATH environment variable. (This approach is probably
preferred.)

Almost. "web folders" is a microsoft-ism (specifically a win98SE and
up -ism) which lets you access your web directories as a folder on your

that and certain disk repartitioning operations. i believe that you

mails sent by the clients are reaching properly as I could see them logging
in their respective accounts in the Mail server itself (It gives messages as
"new mail arrived."). As the mail retrieval will be using POP3, what
configurations should I make to the sendmail.cf or elsewhere so that the
clients can read their mails with there own mail clients? I've configured
the mail clients properly.
The message Outlook Express gives is:
