I'm a newbie to linux, but from what little experience I have I say this:
RedHat is a nice distro, but configuring is harder given somewhat unorthodox
file locations. Also, rpm is great for installing, but upgrading and
uninstalling is a pain, especially libraries. I'm considering switching to
Debian. any comments?

Need help for win98 log on to linux.
I have Redhat linux 5.2 installed on PII 400. I am trying to telnet and
ftp to this linux server from a machine which OS is win98. But it
failed. The message from linux is "Incorrect user name" or "Password" is
not correct. Even
anonymous ftp can not log on to linux from this machine. The fact is
that, any
other machines in my network (WIN NT, WIN95 and linux) have no problem
logon to this linux machine using the same username and password which
failed
log on from that WIN98.
Anybody has some clue or can give me some seggustion what's wrong?
Thank you very much

I know that (when using the c shell) each time one opens a terminal
window,
the .cshrc file is executed. Is there a file that is executed (when
using the c
shell) once only upon login, and not every time one creates a new
terminal
window? Or could one setup a file to executed in such a way?

Subject: How to run Trident 3DImage975 -based videocards
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Date: 28 Apr 1999 13:00:27 -0500
Hi,
Many people complained they could not run videocards with Trident
3DImage975 (9750) chipset at decent resolutions (usually, the screen
just remained black at something like 1024x768).
I also spent some time on a Jaton videocard with this chipset, and now
I can squeeze any resolution out of it (up to 1200x1024), with decent
color depths:
bpp/resolution 640x480 800x600 1024x768 1152x864 1200x1024
8 * * * * *
16 * * * * *
24 * * * - -
32 * * * - -
The recipe is kind-of simple, but strange: one needs to use _particular_
orders of resolutions in the "Modes" line. (I did not touch Modelines.)
The details are at
http://www.math.sunysb.edu/~comech/tools/3DImage975.html
If you have time and need to try this recipe, I'd appreciate to hear
from you whether this (or some modification) solves your problems with
this chipset.
Hope this will help someone,
Andrew
PS. I guess this would also work for 3DImage985 chipset... I do not know.

Linux doesn't properly detect my 12.5 gig hard drive. That's why I am
forced to use FreeBSD because Linux thinks it is a 7.5 gig hard drive.
Apparently though nobody else has this problem becuase I can't seem to get
an answer. (system commander couldn't detect if right either so its not a
OS problem, but it is a brand new drive)
Just be careful and make sure to keep the old drive and the reciept to the
new one around.

Hi all,
almost surprisingly, startx -- -bpp 24 works ... except that it
messes up my colors so that I see almost negatives (blue becomes
red-pink etc.; this happens in netscape and IDL, a plotting package).
Interestingly, gs seems to get the colors about right.
does anyone know a solution to this?

Possibly because W98 uses encrypted passwords? I bet you don't have SP4
installed on NT either...
Do a search of the MS KB and disable encrypted passwds in the W98
registry.

Nice if it happens, but the multinationals have an awful lot of
economic power, and governments don't want to go against them.
Considering that some of the countries in the Far East seem to have no
concept of intellectual property, and information is getting easier
and easier to copy (why does nobody copy a book? because to do it
effieciently takes a large investment in plant; why does everyone
(including me, but only for personal use) copy music? because it takes
almost no investment to do so; and the same goes for software and
electronic books), I can see the concept of intellectual property
going down the drain. The FSF's ideas may be more practical.

I can get the whole thing in under an hour. There's a University FTP
server mirroring redhat.com, luckily, about 300 feet from me and I get
200K downloads per second (I'm on ethernet of course). Pretty neat if ya
ask me. But, I hope you have more luck than I did while trying to
install. Nothing got installed. SOmething about every single
installation script not being completed. So, there I was with a crippled
machine and having to reinstall 5.2. ps..server is ftp.phys.ttu.edu.
Seems hardly used by anyone. Good luck.

There are quite a few, though they're often called bootdisks or rescue disks.
Check this directory:

The directory is poorly named, unfortunately.

That's just bullshit....I'm what u would call a communist ( it's
actually very different from that but you probably wouldnt understand),
and that doen't mean i'm jealous of other ppl, it also doesn't mean i'm
not sitting behind a 17" LG Flatron......and those people aren't sitting
on their asses a lot of times there just is no work.....and just
because we take care of the whole society, and doen't let millions
starve in the trash, doesn't mean we are all some sort of decadent
communists....
