This is what I did, personally. I saved my personal files, formatted the
drive, and installed RedHat 7 onto a clean drive. I choose KDE during
RedHat 7 installation. Then I downloaded KDE 2.0.1 for RedHat 7, and
installed it. This is a bit more time consuming, but it worked well for
me. I actually upgraded to XFree86 4.0.2 before installing KDE 2.0.1, but
I don't think this is an issue.

Anyone else tired of reading about complaints about Linux Kernel 2.4?!
I was seriously thinking of upgrading to Linux Kernel 2.4, but I'm not sure
anymore. Maybe waiting for 2.4.1, or 2.4.2, or 2.4.x maybe be prudent,
considering the problems many people are having with 2.4.

If you login with minicom, what happens after you enter your password?
Do you see a bunch of garbage characters (indicating that PPP started on
the other end)? If instead you end up in a shell or other prompt, pppd
may not see anything recognizable from that end and gives up.

Very often you cat set up a PAP connection (username and password in
/etc/ppp/pap-secrets). Then you could try this (but maybe enable more
extensive debugging with 'kdebug 7' or something temporarily):

pppd /dev/ttyS1 115200 CONNECT '/usr/sbin/chat -v "" ATDT123456789
CONNECT \c' noipdefault noauth ipcp-accept-remote noccp crtscts idle 60

"Invitation to sociology" by Peter Beger. "Humanism: it's history and nature"
by Edwin Tapp. Introductory Sociology which is a textbook written by a number
of people, David Skinner and Andew Webster being two. The periodals I
sometimes read are the "New Zealand Humanist", and one called "The Rationalist"
which I admittedly haven't read in a while. I've lurked on
talk.philosophy.humanism
for sometime and uk.philosophy.humanism infrequently.

Two that I can think of.
        1. Do NOT write protect those tapes! Some Scsi drives act
weird if you do! (I have yet to try that on my Wangtek 250 If I
remember on mine it did not care!) Aparently some drives DO care!
        2. Clean your heads on your drives! those big drives can get
Grungy FAST! I take mine out of the system. and fully vaccume and swab
the heads with Alchol (the normal uncented, unoiled PURE isopropal
alchol is best. Also check the belts and the caspin. Clean that caspin
with warm water and gentel SOAP (keep the alchol off that! it makes
Grungy rollers (a similar problem as in 8tracks (my second choice in
audio format after LPs)) If your roller gets spongy and gooey! REPLACE
IT! Check the belt too! A loose streched belt is bad news! Tandberg
will REpair such hardware or you should be able to order the parts if
you need to replace them. Blow the dust out of the IR sensor. with
cans of air. (NOT SHOP air from a oil based Compressor, used with ship
tools).
A possible 3rd idea. Turn the drive OFF! Let it sit off for a
few minutes (if you do the cleaning my way it will meet this no 3.
Also check all cables. Make sure nothing worked loose! This is best
checked during step no. 2. Make sure all chips are fully in their
sockets! If you have the skils RESEAT THEM! Some of those drives used
single wipe sockets that get corroded 0ver time..

The screensaver is not the crashing problem, since this also happend while I
was working on my PC. But the filesystem might be a good hint, because when
this problem ocurred for the first time, I had to restart my Computer booting
from CD in "rescue mode" to fix the filesystem, so I could boot again.

Humanism is a philosophy, not sociology. At best such a text
would be a 3rd hand account of what Humanists of various
        sorts advocate.

>of people, David Skinner and Andew Webster being two. The periodals I

These are at best vague. They don't give the reader any clue
what sorts of 'Marxist' ideas Humanists have been espousing
or where to look for them.

Citing newsgroups is also feeble at best. The sample of
users may or may not be representative. If those groups
are anything like similar groups I've frequented, there
is likely as much variation amongst the Humanists there
than you might find in the population in general.

You haven't even provided a good example, even one that might
        be grossly unrepresentative.

The new pppd has dial-on-demand capability. RH uses pppd and the ifup script.
If your system uses wvdial, then you will want to check out /etc/wvdial.conf
otherwise check out /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/chat-ppp0.
You'll find the configuration settings in these files.

After it runs the scripts OK and starts ppp, it hangs up my modem.
I thought maybe it was a hardware flow control problem but crtscts should
solve this problem, right? I've tried various otehr apps, wvdial, rp3,
etc. hopin that they would catch something I'm missing, but no luck. I've
read all the documentation save going through the source code. I'm stuck

Make sure you are trying to put the lilo loader in the right partition
sector, ie.:
boot=/dev/hda2 (or whereever).
