Bullshit. Politically correct, but bullshit nevertheless. DR-DOS was
as bletcherous piece of dreck as MS-DOS. "truly superior" and "DOS" in
the same sentence... Gimme a break. "truly superior fecies". Both parodies
on OS had fully deserved being forgotten. One down, one to go. Pox on
the whole CP/M breed...
Could you explain in which way any of {MS|DR}-DOS {5,6}.<whatever>
could have "vastly superior quality"? Superior to what, excuse me? To
MS-DOS 4 (aka The Worst MS Fsckup Ever(tm))? Darn, it's impressive praise!
Seriously, in which way DR-DOS 6.x (had to deal with it, got nausea)
was different from MS-DOS 6.x (ditto)? Both are intolerably bad. MS and
Caldera may fight - I only wish them to choke each other in process. It
doesn't make any of the systems in question less ugly.

Subject: Libtool 1.3 released (at last! :-)
Date: 29 Apr 1999 14:34:03 -0300
Ladies and gentlemen,
The Libtool Team is pleased to annouce the long-awaited release 1.3 of
GNU libtool. It should be available in ftp.gnu.org and all GNU mirror
sites, as well as via anonymous CVS, using the tag release-1-3. See
the libtool home page, at <URL:http://www.gnu.org/software/libtool/>
for details. Diffs and xdeltas from release 1.2 are available.
The most important user-visible changes since release 1.2 follow
(see below for changes since alpha release 1.2f)
* Support for convenience archives.
* New maintainers. Anonymous CVS and home page at gnu.org.
* Portable dlopening interface with libltdl, new -module flag.
* Correctly link installed libtool libraries into programs and other
libtool libraries. Linking of uninstalled libtool libraries into
libraries is under development for 1.4.
* Do not drop library dependencies on platforms that allow them.
* Linking with uninstalled libraries no longer picks installed ones by
mistake.
* Use libraries from the build tree when running uninstalled
executables (may require double linking).
* Allow developers to optimize for build-tree executions.
* Support -export-symbols-regex for controlled symbol exporting.
* Support -R to hardcode directories in library search paths.
* New ports, demos and tests. Lots of improvements and bug fixes.
User-visible changes since release 1.2f:
* AM_PROG_LIBTOOL is smaller and faster
* AC_LIBTOOL_WIN32_DLL is required in configure.in for libtool to
attempt to build dlls on win32 hosts
* Shared libraries on AmigaOS up to version 4 are now disabled
since they don't meet libtool's requirements for shared libraries
* -L supports now relative directories
* Libltdl has a new license: LGPL with a special exception
* Libltdl can be used as stand-alone package
* dlopen support for BeOS
* Partial support for Motorola System V 4
* Improved support for AIX, BeOS, Cygwin, DJGPP, DU, IRIX and HP/UX
* Documentation updates
* New tests
* Bugfixes

Correct me if im wrong, please.
But the S3 server's to my knowledge were replaced by the SVGA server.
According to some X doc's I read somewhere on some /dev/hdXX =]
So therefor when RedHat 5.2, 5.0, 6.0 [Yea Yea its outa order.] configures
X with the SVGA server, its correct. I have the same card, a S3 Virge/DX
[4mb], happily using the SVGA server. If you want/need my
/etc/X11/XF86Config for the SVGA server email me and i will send it to

That is a catch with capitalism in general. There are conflicting
goals between producers and consumers. Ideally, there should be a
balance between these needs. However, as producers tend to get
larger and larger then tend to be able to lose touch with
significant portions of the consumer base.
Software aggravates this by encouraging, through the need to remain
'compatible', an all or nothing winner takes all situation. Niche
and boutique vendors are a remarkably less viable option than they
might be for cars, or soup, or lunch.
This leads to the frustration felt by the 'ABM' crowd.
Free software rebalances the situation by allowing the creation
of more than one 'monopolist'. In this case 'monopolist' refers
to any producer that is immune or nearly immune to the competition
pressures that are supposed to balance a captalist system and make
it work efficiently and effectively. The end result is the potential
for competition pressure to be restored to the original 'monopolist'.
In the absence of any real competition pressure, a given market
begins to more resemble a command economy with the 'monopolist'
taking the role of politburo.
While it might be true that Free Software undermines the abilities
of some to make profit, that is no the sole goal of capitalism. For
any particular thing, most of us are consumers. So, paying any more
that we need to for a office suite or being forced into only one OS
option is not necessarily in our best interests as consumers in
capitalism.
Intellectual Property released into the public's domain once the
initial granted monopoly has expired is also capital that can be
exploited in the persuit of profit (selling other things). That
afterall is what IP is specifically stated to be for (US Const.).
Free Software merely builds that common pool of software capital
that all coders that benefit from copyrights should eventually
be contributing to.
If IP were administered as it should be, RMS would be redundant.

What does your CLASSPATH environment variable say? It normally points
to an archive of classes compatible with whatever Java interpreter
you're using. It looks distinctly like you haven't updated this to
point to the 1.1.3 classes.

kaffe is an alternative java interpreter, as far as I know. From my
reading of sun.tools.javac.*, javac on other systems calls
sun.tools.javac.Main too - it may just be wrapped up in more binary
garbage elsewhere.

If your CLASSPATH's screwed up, non-obvious things are likely to
happen, usually related to the versions of the bytecode interpreter
and library code being different.

I think you may be able to change this in awt.properties in the lib
directory (as I remember) of your Java distribution, but I've never
tried this myself.

I don't doubt this at all and I don't disagree. MS FUD is a
pernicious thing - implicit in this choice of words is that it cannot
be stopped - only met. We have to fight fire with fire, by hiring our
own whores.
>The response by the Linux community to the Mindcraft FUD attack was

Which was to be concerned. OK, but they also need to fight fire with fire.
And not just post it to newsgroups. Somebody needs to come up with
the cash to get the "Linux beats NT hands down" article into the
mainstream press so that the pointed-haired MIS people who control
this stuff will see it.
If you don't do this, you're just, if you'll pardon the expression,

Date: Thu, 29 Apr 1999 22:16:41 -0400
I am very pleased to announce the release of version 3.1.2 of ht://Dig.
This is the latest stable release and is recommended for all production
servers.
The ht://Dig system is a GPL'ed complete world wide web indexing and
searching system for a small domain or intranet. This system is not meant
to replace the need for powerful internet-wide search systems like Lycos,
Infoseek, Webcrawler and AltaVista. Instead it is meant to cover the search
needs for a single company, campus, or even a particular sub section of a
web site.
Release notes for htdig-3.1.2 21 Apr 1999
This version fixes a number of bugs in the 3.1.1 release and is the
latest stable release of ht://Dig. It is highly recommended for
production servers.
