Hi there,
I am just about to plan a Linux based fax server system and at the first
glance HylaFax looks very impressive.
Is anybody running HylaFax on Linux in a production environment
with success ? Especially I am looking for a reliable and robust fax
server solution.
Any alternatives to Hylafax ?
For those of who run it with success I would be most happy to hear about
your modem equipment and configuration.
Thanks,

ITYM "a newer version of XFree86".
X's version is X11R6.3, soon to be X11R6.4, but normally it doesn't
change often.

Nearly zero. But security holes, worms and Trojan horses are a
problem, just like on any other Unix system. Remember, though, that
we've been living with security threats for more than twenty years and
thus, lots of holes have already been patched.

Matt, is that you from rec.bikes?!?! wow.
Anyway, there are two rules of thumb (rule of thumbs?) in 2D:
1) 2D performance doesn't matter anymore anyways, so get some cheap
nappy card.
2) Get a Matrox card.
One I would suggest is Matrox Productiva G100 4MB. It runs very well
under windows, but seems to run not very fast under KDE (XFree86?).
(Anybody wanna help out here?...) But then again, I'm new at Linux. If
you plan to use this card in the future on a very hi res monitor, then
mebbe you should get the 8MB versoin.

To get sound working on my machine, I had to boot into DOS, run

Yes. You have to add the following keywords to mount options:
gid=xxx (to change group) or/and
uid=xxx (to change owner)
you can also add
umask=xxx (to set permissions)

It might be a variation of this, too.
For example, many places use either a public or private list of
IP addresses that are dialups. SMTP connections from these addresses
are disallowed. As was pointed out, this is a way that the problem
of junk email is being attacked.
Then, there are other possibilities.
The best best is to ask GULF.NET why specifically these messages
are being rejected. We get requests like this every so often
(although we try to keep this down with SMTP errors messages that
are more informative than "access denied"). GULF.NET is the proper
place to address your question because it is (judging from
your message) pompano.pcola.gulf.net that is rejecting the SMTP
traffic.
Most likely, they'll be happy to explain why (although you should
be ready for a suggestion that you change ISPs). If it does turn
out to be that GULF.NET rejects connections from dialups, then the
solution is to (as others have pointed out) pass all your SMTP
traffic via Earthlink's servers. This actually has other advantages
for you as well, so it's a good idea regardless of the problem
with GULF.NET.

Please give exact citations of these "couple of dozen" so-called biology
books that employ the non-word "virii". The first half-dozen or so should
suffice. Please make sure your citations are complete with title, date
and place of publication, page number, and several surrounding sentences
for context. Biology books only, please.
The OED has this to say about "virion":
Etymology: a. Fr. virion (A. Lwoff et al. 1959, in Ann. de l'Inst. Pasteur
XCVII. 286), f. vir-us virus + -i- + -on -on[1].
The complete, infective form that a virus has outside a host cell,
with a core and a capsid.
1959 Ann. de l'Inst. Pasteur XCVII. 288 - The viral infective system,
the virion, may be considered as a clathrate type of compound in
which the genetic component is enclosed in a coat or capsid formed
of subunits or capsomeres.
1967 K. M. Smith Insect Virol. i. v - The virion is, structurally
and physiologically, different from any cellular organelle and
from any microorganism.
1975 Sci. Amer. May 25/2 - An electron micrograph of the polio-virus
virion (the virus particle) reveals a sphere 17 nanometers
(millionths of a millimeter) in diameter... The virion consists
only of protein and the nucleic acid RNA.
You will note that unlike words like "criterion" and "ganglion" whose
indicated plurals clearly connote a rule of "-ion" => "-ia", in the case
of "virion" no such irregular plural has been specified, which means that
the normal "$" => "-s" rule for creating English plurals should
remain in effect for this word.
Further research indicates that this is indeed the case. Numerous
examples of this in reputable publications available upon request,
although I suspect that you can discover them on your own easily enough.
Try searching altavista for both "virion" and "virions" to see how
this works. By way of contrast, now try looking around for "virion"
and "virii" occurring together on the same page. Neither shall you
discover "viri" in any reputable publication either.
Here is the abbreviated form of what the OED says about "virus":
Etymology: a. L. virus slimy liquid, poison, offensive odour or
taste. Hence also Fr., Sp., Pg. virus.
1 Venom, such as is emitted by a poisonous animal. Also fig.
2 Path. a A morbid principle or poisonous substance produced in the
body as the result of some disease, esp. one capable of being
introduced into other persons or animals by inoculations or
otherwise and of developing the same disease in them. Now
superseded by the next sense.
b Pl. viruses. An infectious organism that is usu. submicroscopic, can
multiply only inside certain living host cells (in many cases
causing disease) and is now understood to be a non-cellular
structure lacking any intrinsic metabolism and usually
comprising a DNA or RNA core inside a protein coat (see also
quot. 1977). [ Formerly referred to as filterable viruses,
their first distinguishing characteristic being the ability to
pass through filters that retained bacteria. ]
c colloq. A virus infection.
3 fig. A moral or intellectual poison, or poisonous influence. Also in
weakened use, an infectious fear, anxiety, etc.
4 Violent animosity; virulence.
5 attrib. and Comb., as (sense 2 b) virus disease, infection,
particle; virus-carried, -containing, -free, -induced, -infected,
-like adjs.; virus pneumonia, pneumonia caused by a virus rather
than a bacterium.
Notice that it lists the plural as "viruses". Not "viri". Not "virii".
Just "viruses".
I have never heard of a "-ion" => "-ii" rule, be it in Greek or in
English, nor can I discover any exemplars in which this alleged rule
is active. Until such time as you prove otherwise, I shall continue to
consider "virii" nothing more than a perverse, analphabetic corruption.
Happy searching. It is a good day for enlightenment.

RedHat 5.X needs at least 8MB RAM to install, even if a minimal
installation will run in only 4MB afterwards. You should also get
yourself a swap-partition.
Try to install a more minimalistic distribution instead, for instance

also, have you added the appropriate lines to your etc/rc.d/rc.local file
/sbin/depmod -a
/sbin/modprobe ip_masq_*

ipfwadm -F -p deny
ipwadm -F -a m -S 192.*.*.*/24 -D 0.0.0.0/0

Perhaps you may want to upgrade to the newer 2.2.x kernel and use ipchains.

Hi guys!
This summer I'm going to a few netparties, and there I'll probably have to
install some linux systems.
But I don't want to answer all the questions in the RedHat installation
program each and every time I install a new linux system from my ftp server.
So how do I create a custom and somewhat automated installation disk for ftp
installs? I did some research on my own, and found out this:
1) Build a custom kernel (this is easy)
2) Copy it to /dev/fd0
3) - Now what? -
Do I have to install Lilo on the disk too? What else do I need?
Hope you can help me!
