I've installed lilo (but it failed, saying partition 5 was not a valid
number), so now I can't boot from HD anymore (normally, win98 started when
booting from HD, Linux from floppy)
Partition:
hda1 = Win
hda5=linux
Any ideas?

Hey I am trying to put on the patch from 3.3.5 to 3.3.6 and it says to
run the patch from the directory that contains the "xc" directory, well
where the hell is the "xc" directory on a vanilla install, thanks...

Er... hmm. Did you read the documentation before you did whatever you
did? Post your /etc/lilo.conf and the output of "fdisk -l /dev/hda" and
someone will probably be able to help.

You see, there are a couple of things that could be going wrong. The DOS
boot sector that is in the MBR of most hard disks is not entirely
comfortable with booting from a logical partition's bootsector, so there
are problems there. However, your assertion that you can't boot from the
HD now leads me to believe that you tried to install LILO on the MBR and
failed in some way. I'd say your lilo.conf should look like this:

boot=/dev/hda   #install on the MBR
map=/boot/map   #loading map location
prompt
linear #might help if hda5 is above the infamous 1024-cyl limit
timeout=100
image=/boot/vmlinuz     # or where your kernel's stored
   label=linux          # or whatever
   root=/dev/hda5       # root partition
   read-only
other=/dev/hda1         # that Other OS
   label=dos
   table=/dev/hda # this line is important

So boot your Linux system from a floppy, put that in /etc/lilo.conf, and
run /sbin/lilo. Then try booting from the hard drive. It won't mess up
anything worse than it already is, and it might help.

It means a program has segfaulted - improper attempted memory access.
You probably have core (i.e. memory) dumps disabled, but it'll still
give you the message.

Read a unix FAQ. Possibly the linux FAQ also.

Boy, people are getting too young to remember that computer memory used
to consist of "core": little ferrous rings on a woven matrix of address

LILO has been updated in version 21.4 to boot from all parts of large
disks, provided you BIOS has support for large disks thru the EDD
packet call interface (post 1998 bios).

The source code for this update to LILO is at:

It is wherever you unpacked the X 3.3.5 source code. Maybe you need to
get and unpack it. (If so, it would probably be easier to get the 3.3.6

You SHOULD normally install lilo in the MBR. That is the most
convenient way to do in most cases. If you insist, however,
you can install it in a primary Linux partition or in an
extended partition, but not usually a logical partition.
You must also make that the active partition on the disk.

Xemacs appears to be a separate package from emacs. To see what
you have try
rpm -qa | grep emacs
That will show all the emacs packages you have installed.
If you don't have it, you should be able to find it in the
RPMS directory on the CD. Otherwise,
you should be able to get xemacs and related packages from
the RedHat web site or a mirror site. It is a bit difficult
connecting these days, so you may want to work.
When you are connected to the web, gnoRPM's web find option
seems to allow for reasonably rapid downloads and installs.

Why? This kernel is seventeen days out of date. You should try
2.3.99-pre3, the second pre-patch of 2.3.99-pre4, or whatever is newer.

Remember that 2.3.* kernels are still in development and it is not unusual
for things to be broken.

Why is this a problem? Both should look in /usr/include for the files
taken from glibc. Each should look in its own, version-specific directory
(/usr/{local,}/lib/gcc-lib/i*-linux*/version_number) for gcc-specific
files.

Debian tries to take care of all your dependency needs:

Didn't Sun acquire the right to the name "unix" before all these rules took

"unix". I don't know whether the right extended to (the operating system
