One way is to change the permissions on /dev/audio. For me, it is
[sbnaran@localhost] [/tmp] >> ls -l /dev/audio
crw-rw--w- 1 root sys 14, 4 Apr 25 1995 /dev/audio
The key point is that all users can write to /dev/audio.
But I've noticed that
[sbnaran@localhost] [/tmp] >> ls -l /dev/cua1
crw-rw---- 1 root uucp 5, 65 Jul 12 19:56 /dev/cua1
Now /dev/fax is a symbolic link to cua1. I can't write to /dev/fax,
yet I'm still able to send faxes! And /dev/modem is also a symbolic
link to cua1. Yet I'm still able to dial out!
But I've noticed that the dialing program has set uid root. This
means that when you run the dialing program, you become root for
this program. So indeed you do have access to /dev/cua1.
[sbnaran@localhost] [/tmp] >> ls -l /usr/sbin/chat
-rwsr-xr-x 1 root root 11668 Oct 10 1997 /usr/sbin/chat*
Maybe the fax program has this suid stuff somewhere.

But it should be considered that both countries have a different take on
the concept of 'amateur' than the rest of us. The difference in support
of the Taiwanese little league teams compared to that of those American
ones in the Little League World Series is staggering.

It did no such thing, you just chose to read it that way. Most managed to
understand it as a comparison of US combat casualties compare to all UK
casulties in the war. That was shown to be false by a factor of 20-25%.

One thing to try that saved my bacon once. When you boot from the floppy,
I assume you get the LILO: prompt? And you probably reply "rescue" or
"linux"? Do you know what the CHS (Cylinder/Head/Sector) for hdb is
supposed to be? If so, at the LILO prompt try entering something like:
rescue hdb=c,h,s
In my case, I used:
linux hdb=620,128,63
What had happened to me is that I upgraded my BIOS with a brand new,
different, BIOS chip. Well, the LBA translation in the new BIOS was
somehow different from the old BIOS. Everything was messed up! But
by using the above, I told LINUX to use the specified CHS instead of
the BIOS.
The only reason that I mention this is due to the message about
0 PHYSICAL HEADS. That indicates, to me, that the partition table
may be corrupt. Putting hdb= on the LILO command line might just
get you up far enough to fix this. You do have a copy of the
old fdisk parameter? I found that having that can be a life saver
as well.
Good luck!

Subject: mouse isn't working
Date: Mon, 12 Jul 1999 22:48:40 -0400
Hi again!
I've inherited a box from a developer who was invited to leave. The box has
linux and Win95 partitions.
The mouse doesn't work under linux (Red Hat 5.2). Probably because it is a
Microsoft Intellimouse.
I do see a message about at PS/2 mouse being detected during the boot
process.
I've looked at the docs and it looks like I need to run mouseconfig and then
XConfigurator. Unfortunately, this box boots directly to an Xwindows login.
I can log in but then can't figure out how to navigate to a console window
without use of the mouse. And there is a console window RIGHT THERE, I just
can't get the focus to it.
Can someone suggest a good approach to getting to a console to try running
mouseconfig and XConfigurator, or some other good approach to getting el
mouse to work?
Thanks,

"C> What is my best approach to do this?
The *easiest* way is with a boot/rescue (floppy) disk set (or a
Slackware boot/root floppy set). Either way all you need on the
boot/rescue (boot/root) is a statically linked version of sed. Boot up
the boot/rescue (or boot/root), mount the root filesystem:
mount -t ext2 /dev/hda1 /mnt
(assumes that the root file system is /dev/hda1)
and edit /mnt/etc/passwd to null out root's password with a command
like
sed -e 's%root:[^:]*:%root::%g' </mnt/etc/passwd >/mnt/etc/passwd.new
then after checking that /mnt/etc/passwd.new is sane, doing a
mv /mnt/etc/passwd.new /mnt/etc/passwd
Then pop out the floppies and boot normally. At the
login: prompt type root. It won't even ask for a password. You should
NOT do this while the box is on the 'net unless you *promptly* reset
root's password to the password *you* select. Once root has a password
you've selected, you can then use the passwd command to set any other
user password to whatever you want.
Note: it is not necessary for the boot/rescue or boot/root to match the
installation actually on the system, except you can't (for example) use
RedHat's install floppy if you have SCSI disks. You can make a
*compatable* boot floppy by installing Linux on *another* machine with
the same SCSI (or driver compatable) card (eg if your dev box has a
AHA-2940W controller, a boot floppy made on a machine with a AHA-2940A
controller will work, etc.).
The reason for a Slackware boot/root floppy set is that Slackware has a
real low-level install hack. Unlike RedHat, the boot/root install set
does not jump right into the (colorful) install procedure, it just boots
up to a plain old login: prompt and has a /etc/password file with root
having no password. And Slackware has a batch of boot floppies that
have various driver sets for various hardware types (bare, various
CD-ROMs, various SCSI, various EtherNet, etc.). (I believe Debian and
SuSE use install hacks that are much like RedHat.)

All it's Ok, but the problem still alive. In fact i have made a copy of my
hard disk.
I have mounted my second disk into /dd (first disk), /dev/hdb6 in /dd,
(usr), and after the copy is done, i have restarted my computer, i believe
that i have forgot to umount partition... And now linux want umount /usr,
is it possible ?
Thanks a lot
Where linux keep this info to automaticaly umount partition ?

This doesn't really belong in comp.os.linux.misc, but here goes.
Limiting access to a web page would depend on a number of factors,
including but not limited to which operating system and web server are
being used. Without more specifics, not a lot can be done to help you.
