Longivity. I've been using your payroll system foobar 95 for 10 years.
You died from a stroke, your decendant liquidated your computer stuff.

Hi-
your setup /very/ much looks mine
i bet we can get you working just sit tight and we'll work thru
it.
you fail to mention any info about your null modem cable
is it a real /nul/modem or just a cable

do you have gettys to contend with?
are the com ports running at the same speed?

what did you use for a terminal program ie. minicom,kermit,etc..

Subject: Printing on an Epson Stylus 400
Date: Tue, 04 May 1999 02:46:13 GMT

Greetings!

I have been using Linux for some time, but I have not yet set up
printing in under Linux. I have, as I mentioned, an Epson Stylus 400
color printer. Currently I am using RedHat 5.9 running kernel 2.2.3-5.
I can print ASCII text well, however, I cannot print any postscript at
all. Consider the following command and resulting output:

% gs -sDEVICE=stcolor -r360x360 stcolor.ps \
/usr/share/ghostscript-5.10/examples/tiger.ps

GNU Ghostscript 5.10 (1998-12-17)
Copyright (C) 1997 Aladdin Enterprises, Menlo Park, CA. All rights
reserved.
This software comes with NO WARRANTY: see the file COPYING for details.
Unknown device: stcolor

If i use a similar command using the upp driver (stc.upp), the PC cranks
away at the HD for a moment and the returns. No messages... NO OUTPUT!
What's going wrong?? Interestingly enough, ghostscript doesn't
recognize the devices:

% gs -h
GNU Ghostscript 5.10 (1998-12-17)

reserved.
Usage: gs [switches] [file1.ps file2.ps ...]
Most frequently used switches: (you can use # in place of =)
-dNOPAUSE no pause after page | -q `quiet', fewer

Now, the stcolor and stc.upp files are in the search path!

/usr/share/ghostscript/5.10/stcolor.ps
/usr/share/ghostscript/5.10/stc.upp

Why can't I print??

Here's the printcap file as generated by printtool:

##PRINTTOOL3## LOCAL stcolor 360x360 a4 {} EpsonStylusColor 4 {}

        :sd=/var/spool/lpd/lpEpson:\

        :if=/var/spool/lpd/lpEpson/filter:

What can I do to be able to print??

Secondly, I would like to eventually set up the printer in some way so I
can print to the printer from both the Linux machine and a Win 95
machine (networked). What way is it easiest to configure the printer
for both machines? Set it up on the Linux box with Samba?? or on Win
95?

Thanks for your patience! I appreciate the help.

There's a text editor called Joe or Jove (one of the two) which uses
Wordstar editor commands. Unfortunately, it doesn't do bold, italics,
etc, as far as I know. Depending on what he's after, that might be enough,
though.

I imagine if he's still using Wordstar for DOS, having a graphical WYSIWYG
editor isn't as important as familiarity and efficiency. Come to think of
it, if he's a DOS guy, he might feel comfortable enough with a CLI to type
in his own printer control codes :).

There may well be something better than Joe and/or Jove anyhow. The
libncurses library makes CLI text editing apps pretty easy to write; there
may be a more fully featured clone that I haven't heard about. Try typing
`+wordstar +linux` into http://www.altavista.com and see what you come up
with.

Best of luck.

Sorry: Because thee are no security announcements they are OK? I remember
10 years ago when people would say that HP must be more secure than Suns
because they had fewer security announcements. I sent a note to CERT about
a way any user could get a root shell trivially on an HP-Apollo.
It was never announced by CERT apparently becasue HP refused to cooperate.
All your lack of reports may indicate is that no one has actually gone
through say vga_spider to check it. After all those are "just games" and
they couldn;t present a security threat could they?

Are they criminally careless? Probably not. Are they stupid? Yes.
If you are going to run those games, you might as well demand that the
user be root to run them, or if youwant, when you first run them as a
user, put up a message "You must be root or set this game suid root to
run it." That is responsible programming.
I would do the same for system files like dump, restore, traceroute,
Some system files HAVE to be suid root. That is fine. For the rest they
should not be set suid root by default.

What is the output of ifconfig and route -n commands? Perhaps pppd didn't
really establised connection and it's just waiting for somethig.

Alternative solution:
I'm not quite sure, but qmail possibly can store users' mail directly into
user directory (file is called Mailbox or sth) most of popular mail clients
can be told to read it from there.

Some fonts have shown up on fonts.themes.org which appear to be freed.
I haven't been able to confirm this.

You can also load up Fontographer and play around; I found it easy to
make basic fonts, but very hard to make them look decent or to hint
them.
