mouse-properties-capplet just gives you the mouse entry in the
gnome toolbox. That controls acceleration, which is the rate at
which the mouse moves across the screen and threshhold which controls
when acceleration takes effect. There is no setting for the
interval between clicks for double clicking.

I've got a machine running RH6.2 and am trying to configure a Travan
tape drive on it. I don't have entry in /dev for /dev/tape, so any
utilities I try fail. There are entries for rmt8 and rmt16, but I get
invalid device when I try using them. Does anyone know what major/minor
numbers I'd need to create a tape device of this type, or has anyone
else had any experience setting one up? Any help/ideas would be
appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Greg.

I've got a funny little problem here. I've got a PII/733 with an i815
chipset. I've installed sound drivers first with 4front OSS, then with
alsa 0.5.9d.
Both aproaches gave me sound, but not perfectly:
When playing mp3's the speed is always 10-20% to high. Resulting in a
high pitch smurf sound. Any ideas?
Sincerely

I use "persist & holdoff" in my ifcfp-ppp0 file like this.
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-ppp0
PERSIST=yes
HOLDOFF=70
Place them just below the "ONBOOT=" line. The "HOLDOFF=" is the delay in
seconds which is needed for the phone line to be reset before I can
redial which may vary some depending on the ISP and phone company.

We have installed RH7 on one system and upgraded to it on another.
So far everything works fine. It has the newer version of lilo,
so we can say goodbye to 1024 cylinder limits. (But the
first boot failed because we needed to change the linear option
in /etc/lilo.conf to lba32. That makes sense because they can't
know in advance whether or not your bios supports the extended call.)
We installed it on a brand new Dell with a fancy 17 flat panel display.
Initially X did not work but after running Xconfigurator and
setting the resolution properly it worked. The version of X11 supplied
even had an entry for that flat screen monitor.
It claims to detect the USB, but we haven't tried any devices.
On the upgraded system, enlightenment came with some additional
annoying features which it took a little bit of effort to remove.
But generally we are quite happy, at least so far.

My SB 128PCI card uses the es1370 module.
Also 2.3.9 is not considered a stable kernel.

I wasn't refering to the "lilo map option". The append directive
supplies options to pass to the kernel when it starts, so the
reference was to the kernel map option, not lilo.
That being said, I doubt that's useful for non-kernel apps that
need access to the system map.

I know that, but it seems to me that my signature delimiter IS "-- " as you
say. Furthermore, the delimiter is stuck in there by my Netscape 4.75 and
that does not seem to be one of its many faults. Could it have been dropped
somewhere? I am posting this mainly to see if the space gets dropped. In
fact, checking your post, it seems that your delimiter is "--" and not "-- ",
at least in this compose window. Bizarre: it is correct in the received
message window. I wonder what it will be like when they get these computers
perfected?

It is part of svgalib, and here at least rpm knows about it:
[john@starfleet john]$ locate savetextmode
/usr/bin/savetextmode
/usr/man/man1/savetextmode.1
[john@starfleet john]$ rpm -qf /usr/bin/savetextmode

The same thing could be said for MSOffice itself. You have no
guarantee that documents created using earlier versions of
MSWord/Excel/whatever will transfer cleanly into the latest
version, or vice-versa. Microsoft has no incentive to ensure
anything but minimal backwards compatibility. Quite the
contrary: as each new version of MSOffice comes out and is
pre-loaded onto new PC's, the deficiencies in interoperability
force users of earlier versions to buy the newest version whether
they want to or not. In my view, this is only possible because
of the virtual monopoly position MS holds in office suite
software. By keeping MSOffice document formats proprietary and
constantly changing, achieving full MSOffice interoperability is
akin to shooting at a moving target. In the dark. Why anybody
would want to buy into this is beyond me.
But all this is really moot, as the original poster asked
specifically about linux software. There's really no reason for
you to extoll the virtues of MS software in a linux newsgroup.
Troll.

If it's a SCSI drive, the devices are /dev/st0 (rewinds after use) and
/dev/nst0 (doesn't rewind). Can't remember for IDE.

Yes, you can...
2 solutions :
- (simple) First you 'll have to create a new user account (not root), then
use the su command to change user as root.
- (advanced) If you want to enable the linux 2.0.X behaviour, you may
recompile your kernel disabling UNIX PTY device (and remove DEVPTS
filesystem from your fstab). You would be able to directly telnet as root.

Mail clients are like religion, or editors. You'll probably want
to try a few to see what suits you. Some fairly decent mail
clients I've tried are tkrat, arrow and polarbar (java). The
first two would probably show up in a search on
