Hi world,

I upgraded my computer, and now I cannot boot Linux, Red Hat.
I used to have one hard disk with 2 partitions for DOS and 2 non-dos
partitions (main and swap)
Then I installed the second HD, on which I have 2 partitions including boot
for win98, and on the old HD I have one partition for DOS and 2 nondos
partitions.
Can I boot with my old diskette (it is Red Had 4.2)? When I tried, it would
only go as far as typing "LI" (as in "LILO boot") and then freeze.
Can I upgrade to RH 5.1 without loading the current version (RH 4.2)?
What will happen if I try to install RH-5.1 on top of 4.2? will it erase my
old files or only the OS files?

Thanks a lot,

 Mike.

RedHat comes with a program called RPM (it is used by other
distributions too). Read the man page for RPM using the command

                man rpm

TO INSTALL:

Basically, software packaged in the RPM format is usually named
in the format "packagename-version-number.rpm". To install the
        package you type in

                rpm -ivh packagename-version-number.rpm

(make sure you "cd" over to the directory where the rpm package
is or else type in the complete pathname)

TO UNINSTALL

        To uninstall do

                rpm -e packagename

Note that to remove the package you just need just the package
name (not the filename of the package ending with *.rpm)

TO FIND OUT WHICH PACKAGE IS INSTALLED

For example to find out if emacs is installed do

                rpm -q emacs

        To remove emacs do

                rpm -e emacs

TO GET A LISTING OF ALL PACKAGES INSTALLED ON YOUR SYSTEM

                rpm -qa

>Also, is it dangerous if I just use the "rm" command to delete programs? The
>main reason that I want to avoid removing programs via that method (aside from
>that it would be time-consuming) is that I'm likely to miss certain files.
>However, I'm wondering whether or not it's bad for the system to just delete
>programs that are installed in the system without a complete uninstallation.

If you are not sure when you use the "rm" command you might
just mess something up. Using RPM is safer if you are new.
It removes all the files related to that app and will tell
you if it can't remove something. Besides, RPM maintains a
database of all apps that are installed on your system so
it is very handy for maintenance. If you are new to Linux
then I recommend RPM. In fact, if you do the rpm -qa command
you will find all the apps that were installed for you by
the RedHat installed - these were installed using RPM too!

        Good luck.

        Dev

No Luck. I changed the updatedb script and told it to Not include
anything under /mnt. That rules out NFS because my only NFS mount is
under /mnt. Anyone else have any ideas ?

- Henri Brady

This may be way off base, but I believe that updatedb can be configured
to keep track of remotely mounted partitions (NFSmounts ...) and a whole

bunch of other things. Check to see what you are holding in UpdateDB,
and recreate it so that it does not include the NFS mounts.

Than try again. It is only a guess, though.

Just by the way, I find "init 1; init 2" is good for fixing some things
without losing (official) uptime ;-)

I don't think I made myself clear. I'm not doing a 'mount /dev/fd0'. I'm
doing like 'dd if=/mnt/cdrom/dist/some-floppy-image of=/dev/fd0' and
getting a R/O error. Also when I do 'mdel a:' from the mtools package that
deletes the floppy. Then when I put in a new floppy and do 'mdir a:' it
says the floppy is blank even though the new one has stuff on it. The
system isn't detecting a floppy change, or it is and it forgets to rescan
the drive.

In case you haven't heard, Sony and AOL are looking to deploy Linux
in consumer products (AOL: A set-top box, Sony: nearly everything).

Also the Canadian National Railway is rolling out Linux to 100
server to serve up email, DNS, WEB pages and be proxies. This decision
was based on stability, ease of installation and maintainability
over the past 6 years of using Linux as a DNS.

Not bad, huh? That's one massive blwo to the "Linux can't do

Remember, what you are paying for is *not* the software -- the bulk of
that cost is for the 30 days on installation and technical support. A
small portion of it is production, packaging, manuals, shipping, and
profit for the retailer. To be honest, really, I can't see how they
can make any money at all at that price unless *very* few people
actually call in with technical support problems.

If you don't need support, just download it off the net or buy the CD
from cheapbytes for two bucks.

Still nobody understands. This is not about "merit". This is simply
about what people go to the trouble to obtain and use. I don't think
proprietary software is "better" or "worse". It just exists, as does
free software.

People will weigh the balance of availability, cost, features,
documentation, quality, support, etc to decide what programs they want
to run. Sometimes the Free one meets those criteria better, other
times the proprietary does.

The part many people here don't get is that each of us assign different
weights to each part of the equation. This is not religion to the
average consumer. I don't like most Microsoft products, but my wife
does. We each are quite happy to do it our own way.

That said, I think both models will surive and they will naturally
"fall into" the niches they can best survive in.

I am not being critical. I am just stating reality. That doesn't mean
I like it the way it is. You seem to confuse my pointing out the
reality of how the world works with being against the goals of Free
software. I'm not.

Free software will not succeed or fail based on you and I debating it
here. It is where the rubber meets the road. Where Free software is a
compelling value to consumers, they will gladly use it. Where not,
they will line up to pay for software.

The best way to promote free software is to write and use it. Spouting
off in a ferver the failings of the proprietary model only shows this
is politics or religion to you, not simply the best value for the
consumer.

I'm sorry you take that reality so personally.

Even if you move the mouse around(particularly to the bottom)? Does the

If not, I think it's the virtual screen setting... no.. I know I've had

Of course I have /etc/ld.so.conf file pointing to the
mentioned directories...
Therefore I can't figure out, why this new package could not
find those files ?

Now I installed 'amaya' with a '-nodeps' option (I have RedHat Linux,
so I used an RPM package of 'amaya') and when I start it, it says :

'error in loading shared libraries'
'libjpeg.so.62: ELF file data encoding not little-endian'

What's the problem now ?

[So, I have libjpeg and libpng already installed into those directories,
that appear in /etc/ld.so.conf file.]
