Actually I think you probably got that by pressing the Tab key twice. Go a
head and see how it works, type in:
vi /etc/res and press the tab key
You can use this for all kinds of kool stuff, not just vi but for about
any thing...

I'd have to go with SuSE. The pros being the X setup tool SAX being better
than Red Hat's, KDE being in the OPT directory where it is much easier to
work with instead of under usr, and the breadth of applications in 6.2
(1300). Of course, whatever you learn on first is usually what you prefer.
I personally think red hat is overrated as a commercial linux distribution.

The pros for Red Hat is wider acceptance, almost instant RPMs of new
application releases.

Then again, I can't download a new samba rpm from the samba d/l site, but
SuSE has the new samba release on their site 1 or 2 days after I saw the
Linux Today posting about it. I have tried Red Hat and SuSE and personally
find SuSE more to my liking. Red Hat will cost about $80 and SuSE about
$29.

Or you can get single cd versions off of places like cheapbytes for
several bucks and try as many as you wish.

Subject: How do I change SCSI cards in Red Hat 6.0?
Date: Sat, 24 Jul 1999 17:24:53 -0800

Hello Everyone!

I have quick question about SCSI cards and Red Hat 6.0. . .

I currently use and Advansys SCSI card (which works fine) but I woulf
like to upgrade it to an Adaptec 2940UW. The aic7xxx.o module supports
the Adaptec card, but I cannot get Red Hat to load this module on boot.

I have changed the following line in /etc/conf.modules from:
alias scsi_hostadapter advansys
to:
alias scsi_hostadapter aic7xxx
but Red Hat still tries to load the advansys module.

I have not been able to find any other files that appear (to me at
least) to select a scsi module to load on boot. So, aside from
compiling Adaptec support directly into my kernel, how can I make Red
Hat see the Adaptec instead of the Advansys?

Thanks very much for your help!!

Personally, I would setup a Linux box doing IP masquerade and dialing out to
the net, possibly providing samba access to your Win95 clients.

If you don't need (or care for graphics) you can use lynx! Its quite fast.
I use Netscape 4.0x, Netscape Gold 3.0x, & lynx. Its funny the Netscape
Gold 3x version starts up almost twice as fast at Netscape 4x and requires
about half as much memory.

There may be various reasons; it doesn't necessarily indicate a
broken modem.

"cu" must be setGID UUCP . Do a "chown root.uucp /usr/bin/cu", followed
by "chmod g+s /usr/bin/cu" .

there are actual HUMANS on the help phones, they respond promptly to

$98 a year. I've been with them since February 96 and live in terror
that cable access will become so cheap that I'll HAVE to switch to

I am customizing my different Window Managers, and am encountering a
severe shortage of color names to work with. Some config files will
accept Hex color names, where others want english color names like
"orchid" or "LightSkyBlue". I currently have about six color names to
work with, and would like to really color coordinate my windows
managers. I work with Lesstif, Fvwm95, and Afterstep. These are all on

my laptop, since they are much less resource intensive than KDE or
others.

Anyone who can send me, or point me to lists of valid color names for
use in my Windows Managers configuration files would be "sincerely
appreciated".

Good luck and time to wait - as it is one with parallel interface
none of which are supported yet AFAIK...
The SCSI version (Astra 1220S) works fine for me.
Have a look at http://www.mostang.com/sane/; unfortunately
they confirm that parallel scanners aren't supported yet.
Sorry !
I'd recommend next time you look for linux support _before_

pgaccess (included with PostgreSQL <URL:http://www.postgresql.org/>,

I had a HP cdrw and worked fine. But I think I know what your problem
is.

If the drive is IDE then you have to go in and recompile your kernel and
turn off atapi drive and turn on scsi emulation.

Of course, If its a scsi drive and linux doesnt recognize it I would be
more inclined to check the cabling and stuff on the drive.

Please help! Here are the system specs:

Abit BH6
Celeron 400mhz (no oc'ing)
128mb PC100 ram
Quantum CR 13.3G hard drive (primary master)
Acer 40x cd-rom (secondary master)

The drive has Win98 using the first 8gigs. Then there is a 128mb linux swap
partition, and the remaining 5G is Linux native.

The RedHat 5.2 installation works great until we get to the point of
creating a boot floppy. After inserting a disk (tried Linux formatted, dos
formatted, and unformatted) and pressing <enter> we just get a generic error
saying "An error has occured". It doesn't even check the floppy drive.
Trying to install LILO on the hard drive results in the same error. I have
seen others with this problem but nobody has offered a solution. Any
suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

ps. The floppy drive works fine in Win98.

Hi, I am trying to get my hd to spin down (it's an IBM DHEA 36480 disk)

I tried hdparm -S 1 /dev/hda

which said the spindown time was set to 5 seconds. The drive spins
down, then stright back up again. I lfet this going for a minute or so,
the longest it stayed down was a bout 1 second...

I notice that if I vdir /proc every file has datestamp of the moment I
do the vdir...

So I asume that the system is constantly writing to these files...

That being the case then the -S option of hdparm is a waste of code...

Any tips on how to get it to work would be welcome...

You have to recompile the kernel with support for the Adaptec as a
module.
Then you have to make a ram drive to load the module at boot time.
Otherwise you have to compile support in the kernel for it.

Look in the RedHat manual for how to build a ram drive.

The short version is

/sbin/mkinitrd /boot/initrd-image 2.x.x <- whatever kernel you are
running

Then in lilo.conf, reference the new ram drive in the

initrd=initrd-image

and the make sure to put in the new kernel image as well.

The manual gives a pretty good description of what you need. An
important note is that you MUST compile in support for a ramdrive (in
block devices), otherwise the module won't get loaded and you can't get
access to your drive. Also loopback device support is needed.

I have NOT done this, but it sounds to me like what you want to do is
setup your Linux box as DHCP server. I would check your distro first
for a DHCP server package (not client). If your distro does not include
one, I'd try this one:
