You are confused here. GNOME is a desktop environment, FVWM is a window
manager. They are meant to be run *TOGETHER*.

What you need to do is make a .xinitrc in your home directory, and add the
following line to it:
exec gnome-session

Then when you start up X, it will run the session manager. If fvwm is not
started, run it. Then gnome-session will remember that it was running, and
you will have it on subsequent startups.

I have to disagree.
If you are not installing LILO in the MBR, then you must have some other
initial step boat loader.
Why would you want to enforce the use of (usually) a DOS boot loader? There
are people, who don't have DOS.

man lilo.conf

I think this will solve your problem.

"DS" asked what to do if the "sectoring was at best AFU due to a
hardware fault when the drive was attached to another machine"

I.E., DS wants to restore the damaged format on the medium, not
write a file system.

>Run fdisk, delete all
>the partitions, create a single primary, and write it to disk. Now mkfs

Suppose the first cylinder of the LS-120 medium is okay, but the rest
has been demagnetized. For example, the diskette was sitting under
a phone (with old-fashioned mechanical ringer) when it rang, or was
carried in a dashboard glovebox next to the speaker.

The fdisk might succeed, but mke2fs would fail because the media is
not formatted.

According to Werner's LILO Technical Overview the I means the secondary
boot loader is about to start. You only get the second L if the geometry
matches and the mapfile is found. So, most likely your lilo.conf
file does not accurately describe the drive and the file systems on it.

Or could it be that the difficulty of the Unix man pages led to the rise
of a GUI-based means of communicating with the computer? :)

- On a more serious note, a fault that I find with many of the man pages
is an emphasis on ``cleverness'' over ``clarity''. Though this style is
consistent with Raymond's profile of J. Random Hacker, it offers fails
to convey meaningful information such as the familiar error, ``You don't
exist, go away''[1]. See van der Linden's _Just Java_ for other examples.

Exhibit A: The ``NAME'' section of less(1).
Exhibit B: The ``BUGS'' section of fvwm2(1).

Point Software's commercial ``PC Tools'' displayed the following error

Accurate? Possibly, but its dignostics (prescriptive or otherwise)

I think if usage examples were a common component of man

Yes, you can use "mgetty".

Setting mgetty up to accept dial-ups, do authentication, and then being
able to access all the services (telnet, ppp, mail, etc.) you want
requires configuration, possible mgetty re-compilation, and is not as
easy as one could wish for, however.

Others here may be able to give you better information on setting mgetty
up to do exactly what you want.

I'm pretty sure that people have posted source they have written.
However, unless you duplicate someone's hardware setup *exactly* you
are going to need to roll your own software to some extent.

==============948A27F3521A8AB4E95D6C8E

I tried compiling the newer kernels (starting from 2.2.7 to 2.2.9) under RedHat 6.0
and use them especially for reading NT drive. I keep getting the following error
message during boot:

[snip]
hdb:[PTABL] [525/64/63] hdb1
Kernel panic:VFS:Unable to mount root fs on 03:08

and it hangs in there. I can still boot using Kernel 2.2.5-15 that originally comes
with RH 6.0.

Now I had successfully done this with RH5.2 upto kernel 2.2.7 both manually and also
sometimes by using buildkernel.

Have anybody done this already with RH 6.0? Can you please give me a clue? I used my
previous .config file (from RH 5.2) and checked under RH 6.0. It looked OK. Had to
change a few things (for example: RAID-4/RAID-5 Mode under BLOCK DEVICES changed to y.)

Noticed that kernel files under RH 6.0 are fragmented into many more parts than it
used to be under RH 5.2.

Thx in advance.

Its a little tricky, as you have to edit your .xinitrc and/or
.xsession files. Assuming GNOME to be in /opt/gnome, I start it with

startx /opt/gnome/bin/gnome

You'll also have to disconnect any floppy drives, or at least prevent the
PC from being booted from a floppy. There are DOS programs which
allow ext2 partitions to be read and written under DOS without regard
to the Linux file permissions.

theoddone33 scribbled manically:
: From
: my limited experience installing windows, I'm assuming it will only install
: itself in the first partition. Is this correct?

I admit I'm not sure about the first partition, but I know Windows
_does_ want to be on the first hard drive (the master, that is), so it seems
a good guess that it would want the first partition. OTOH, the LILO mini-
howto suggests that you can boot DOS, at least, from a later partition.

: Also, I read in Linux
: Journal that LILO can load windows. I would like RH to load by default,
: even if windows is in the first partition and I want to put LILO in the
: Master Boot Record. Is there anyone who knows how to do this that would
: like to explain it to me further? Specifically, I need help with getting
: LILO to load windows. Any help is greatly appreciated.

You might want to take a look at the LILO mini-howto at
http://www.linux-howto.com/ptHOWTO/mini/LILO
and the Linux+Win95 mini-howto at
http://www.linux-howto.com/ptHOWTO/mini/Linux+Win95
Plus, of course, the lilo and lilo.conf manpages, which are pretty good,
and the lilo docs in /usr/lib/lilo/doc (assuming you installed them, or have
them on CD). The short description is: install windows first (making sure
you leave empty space for your linux partition), then install linux, then,
from linux, install lilo, with a lilo.conf file which gives you a choice
between Windows and linux, with linux as the default. Not hard at all...
like I say, 'man lilo.conf' is your friend.
