Hmm. This is the first time I ever heard of this. Maybe it is because
I have been using MetroX on my client systems until Quake 3 test was

33 here. Learned to program on a Cray in '78 (it's been downhill ever
since). Did the TRS 80 CO-CO, Timex Sinclair, Apple IIe, etc until '91
when I got my first PC.
Started Linux in 1997 and have never looked back. Got a priest to come
over and exorcise Bill Gates from my machine about 3 months after I
started using Linux.

RPM "runs" on Slackware but does not "function" all that well. It has
to be used with the --nodeps switch so any abilities it might have had
it no longer does...namely dependancy checking.
Better off just using rpm2tgz and using pkgtool or installpkg ar
simply tar.

I had to recompile the kernel because I changed the processor, and from
then, I can't print a single page.
Everything seems OK; print requests are queued, but "lpq" shows the printer

What can I do, to get it "on-line".

I used exactly the same hardware, exactly the same dd. The only thing
I did was to create two different kernels, one optimized for the 386,
the other for the Pentium. All other files on the system were
untouched. Switched between the two kernels multiple times (using LILO).
This means the 386 kernel run's faster on a Pentium than the Pentium kernel.

Gee, I'm trying to figure out the answer to that question myself...
Once you've found a bootable image, you need to use mkisofs to build the
CD image. There's an option (I believe it's -b) that lets you specify the
boot image...it's that simple. However, El Torito requires that you make
a boot catalog...use the -c option (i.e., "-c /boot.catalog" -- this will
place the boot catalog in the root directory of the CD).
Let me know if you ever find a boot image.

Could be worse. Yesterday, i installed Windowmaker 6.0 on my system. I
use the preinstalled Gnome (SuSE 6.1), so i changed the configuration.
Everything works really nice but then :
1. i start gmc (gnome file manager)

3. I double click it and next thing i see is a black screen and then
some BIOS-information :-) Linux just crashed big time :-)

I use a client called cIRCus. Like others its not as good as mIRC, but
you get a similar interface to mIRC, a window for each channel, private

Subject: Dependencies issues
Dear all,
I am trying to install three RPM pagages, and am having a bit of a
problem with it. When trying to install each one, rpm gives me a list
of failed dependencies. For completeness, here are the exact errors
rpm -Uvh tcl-8.0.4-29.i386.rpm
failed dependencies:
libc.so.6(GLIBC_2.1) is needed by tcl-8.0.4-29
libc.so.6(GLIBC_2.0) is needed by tcl-8.0.4-29
libm.so.6(GLIBC_2.1) is needed by tcl-8.0.4-29
rpm -Uvh tclx-8.0.4-29.i386.rpm
failed dependencies:
libc.so.6(GLIBC_2.1) is needed by tclx-8.0.4-29
libc.so.6(GLIBC_2.0) is needed by tclx-8.0.4-29
libm.so.6(GLIBC_2.1) is needed by tclx-8.0.4-29
rpm -Uvh tk-8.0.4-29.i386.rpm
failed dependencies:
libc.so.6(GLIBC_2.0) is needed by tk-8.0.4-29
libm.so.6(GLIBC_2.1) is needed by tk-8.0.4-29
The problem I am having is that I seem to have the files required by
these packages in my /lib directory. What am I missing? Thanks in
advance.

Does the bios see more than 16 MB? I recently installed a 64 MB Module
and put it in the wrong slot (3rd instead of 1st) and so the system
didnt see more than 16Mb (Was a GIGABYTE Board). Putting the Dimm Module

Um, not sure. I believe it was called "breiserfs" or maybe just
"reiserfs". A search (possibly of SlashDot) may yield some results... I
believe it's still in beta though.

38. First computing experience was with a HIS 6000 running some flavor of
B---C. I've been playing with Linux since 1995 and have decided this is the
summer I leave Micro$oft behind -- but whether for Linux or *BSD is unknown.
(This is also the summer I learn C.)

Maybe (from my experience) you need the modem initialization string.
You can extract this from the .inf files on your modem driver disk.
Just look for a line that says something like ini:ATZblahblah

If you just want to protect your databases: make sure that your database
syncs often enough to disk. This can be done by
- using file i/o with the O_SYNC flag (for example, with opening
in O_SYNC mode.)
- performing a fsync() to the file descriptor(s) when a transaction has
happened. (might provide better performance.)

Hi,
it's called reiserfs and the URL is

How did you get your hands on a Cray as a 12-year-old?

Subject: Mount fails
Date: Fri, 30 Jul 1999 11:29:09 GMT
Dear Listers,
Please help me as I am new to Linux.
I am trying to Install Red Hat 6.0 on my old 486 PC
after I defined filesystems and selected packages to install, it formats
my drive and then tells me ' mount failed invalid argument '
Is it that I am missing required filesystem?
I defined /,/usr,/tmp, swap,/data1,/data2
Am I missing something or there is another reason/workaround ?
Thank in advance.
Tom
