A short note on dangerous governments,,, Yes, Iraq, North Korea, Iran
and the like are dangerous to world peace but the danger which we (as
Americans and citizens of a 'free' country) are most likely to see comes
from opur own govenrment. The US government is getting too instrusive
into our daily lives, all in the name of 'protecting' us. Email me at

I'm about to partake on this endeavor within the next 2 weeks myself.
I was reading on one site that he set it up so that a macro program is
running and hitting the numlock on his keypad will do a shutdown. I
plaon on doing something similar.

Actually it *is* an option. Red Hat is also selling "Red Hat Linux
Core" for $40. This is the same as the "Official" Linux 6.0, but
without support, the Getting Started Guide, and the Applications CD
(i.e., about the same as you got with Official Red Hat 5.2, for about
the same price).

How do I enable sound in Linux? I have Mandrake 5.2 (=Redhat 5.2) with
compiled kernel 2.2.5 and KDE 1.1, and also on the same computer SuSE
5.3 with kernel 2.0.35 and KDE 1.0. Neither OS has ever made the
slightest sound. (Sound is fine under Win95. NT4 is silent too.)

You can add a paramenter to your lilo.conf file to prompt
for a password before allowing "linux single" to work, but
this may not stop somebody from bringing in their own boot
floppy and bypassing your protected lilo. If you can't
physically secure the machine so the floppy device can't be
used you will need to enable a BIOS password or at least
change the boot order so that the machine always tries to
boot off the HD before looking for a bootable floppy.

I'm the only one using the computer and always use the same account for
all non-root work, so how do I have kdm automatically login into this
account instead of asking for username and password?

If it can't be done with kdm, how does this work from console?

I guess I did not provide enough information.
I have a linux server.
Additionally to that server, I have a printer that is an ethernet
printer directly connected to the network. It is a HP 4M Plus that is a
postscript printer, then it is standalone. It has it own IP number.
I setup a printer queue on the server in the /etc/printcap with the line
"rm=<IP number>"
When I log on the server as root, I am able to print to it. When I log
as a user without special rights, I cannot and I get the message
"lpr: connect: permission denied.
Jobs queued, but cannot start daemon."
The explaination I had in the printing howto is that my network connect
is badly configured, but it is then paradoxal that I would be able to
print when being root. I wondered if anyone had a hint. I changed the
file permissions, but it is maybe not sufficient.

Because anyone can make a script with the same name as a
system command (eg ls, mv) and put it in, say, /tmp. If
you then run ls with /tmp as your current directory you
will run the replacement script and not the system command.
If that replacement script copies a shell to your home
directory and makes it suid then anyone can come along
later and run that suid shell and have access to all your
private data, etc etc.

Im pleased to say i've got IP masquerading and diald working this
weekend, one problem though is that diald spontaneously dials out. I've
looked through the man pages and checked theres no cron job causing it
but can't figure out whats making it happen, I have two Win98 PC's
connected to the network, neither of them were running any network app
or anything. As a test I left the server and one PC switched on for a
couple of hours and didnt touch anything, but logs still showed it
connecting every fifteen minutes.

Any tips as to what this could be?

Subject: Re: FIXED(?): Staroffice/glibc problem
Date: Sun, 16 May 1999 15:30:41 -0400

My fix wasn't intended for installing Staroffice but fixing an already
installed one without having to reinstall. However, it should still
work. Your mistake was probably, that in Staroffice all
binaries are already named 'bin', so you do not have to rename them. In
fact 'setup' is a shell script which calls the binary 'setup.bin'. Try
again without renaming the setup and make sure that the wrapper is
called
by changing it to:

#!/bin/sh
# wrapper for old glibc binaries

p=`basename $1`
if [ "$p" = "soffice.bin" -o "$p" = "psetup.bin"
-o "$p" = "setup.bin"]; then
echo "Calling glibc wrapper for file $p"
   exec /usr/i386-glibc20-linux/lib/ld-linux.so.2 --library-path
 /usr/i386-glibc20-linux/lib:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH "$@"
fi
echo "Calling new glibc for file $p"
exec /lib/ld-linux.so.2 "$@"

Also: make sure, that the line 'if [......]; then' is not split.

Cheers, Peter.

and when trying to set the root password for mysql using 'mysqladmin'
it also gives the same error.

You might want to try to check out there FTP site. I was able to get a
driver for the Soundblaster Live card there.

ftp://ftp.soundblaster.com/pub/creative/beta/sblive-0.1b.tar.gz

Good Luck

Subject: Printer Ports etc..

Hey thanks for reading. I'm new at Linux, trying to get my printer to
work. One problem: the ports do not detect anything as far as a
connection goes upon them. My printer is supported (BJC 210) and my
ports work fine in Windows. So I did a cat /proc/devices and found that
lp is not being loaded on my system. There must be an easier way to load
support for lp than reinstalling..isn't there? I dont recall being asked
anything about lp support on install of RH 6, can you thik of anything
else I can do to get Linux to recognize my Lpt ports? If you can help
at all please reply to this message and/or e-mail me. THanks.
