You want to start Apache each time you boot up, right? You need to do
'ntsysv' and select httpd. That will make the daemon start when Linux boots?

Any idea why when I download a file or surf the internet, the download rate
just goes keeps on diminishing until the modem "stalls"? I use an Optiflex
Speedcom 2000 56k modem and I get the following information when I use the
command setserial:

setserial /dev/ttyS0 -a
/dev/ttyS0, Line 0, UART: 16550A, Port: 0x03f8. IRQ: 4
          Baud_base: 115200, close_delay: 50, divisor: 0
          closing_wait: 3000, closing_wait2: infinte
          Flages: spd_normal skip_test

I also found from a linux newbie website that you can speed tweak a modem by
changing parameters in the options file found in /etc/options. So I set the
MTU(Maximum Transmission Unit) to 1250 and the MRU(Maximum Recieve Unit) to
1500. I still haven't noticed any change however. What do I need to setup?

I will assume that you are indeed using the appropriate Xserver (that
S3V as opposed to the regular S3 server). Second there should be a
readme file on your system:

/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/doc/README.S3V or README.S3

which will contain information of several options you can use in your
XF86Config file. try:

Option "noaccel"

and see if that solves the problem. If it does then experiement with
several of the other options to see if you can optomize performance.

Good Luck,

Wally

Thanks for the web link. I found a solution. After installing Netscape for
Windows, I imported the Outlook address book to it. Then I exported the
Netscape address book to a .ldif file. After booting to Linux, I copied the
.ldif file to my home directory and imported the file into my Netscape address
book in Linux. Kinda convoluted, but it sure beats typing in all of those
entries...

Thanks for your help.

Think this is how many times that particular kernel's source was
compile. At least on my system is jives with:
  cat /usr/src/linux/.version
  3

  uname -v
  #3 Tue Apri 25 06:55:05 CDT 2000

I've done three compile with the source in question, therefore '.version'
got increment each time. Consult the kernel's Makefile.

That still sounds like a cron job. Something like 'updatedb', most
likely. Check /etc/cron.d/daily.

Nope. The kernel doesn't do that.

Yes, and most exploits wouldn't show a login user anyway.

You mean a porn-web filter? Look at squid. It's a httpd proxy.
You can filter/alienate domains with patern matching with it.

I found a broken NSM "mercury 40" SCSI jukebox surplus and have finally fixed it.
It has 4 SCSI drives, each appearing as a SCSI device (no LUNs) and holds 150
CDs. The CD loading mechanism is controlled by an RS-232 serial interface. I
have no manual for this thing and so, have no idea of the RS-232 command set.
I have the ability (though not yet the knowledge) to write a Linux driver if I can find
the command set (and the time). I would, however, prefer to just find the driver on
the net somewhere. If you know of software (or a method) I can use to get this
thing attached (preferably via my Linux server) to my network please help me out.

Now for something more constructive:
Have you been overclocking your vram (or whatever it has) ???

strangely only when moving the mouse (in Bryce; I guess Bryce had its

Hope this leads you onto new ways ;-)

The RealPlayer7 I installed had two scripts in the install directory:

After I installed it, I ran the two scripts and Netscape understood
Realplayer links.

att 4410 and 605 are partly compatible with vt100, but there are a lot of
function keys (that could be done with xterm using resources), but also
programmable function keys (not done compatibly with xterm). If it's
really hardcoded, I would expect it uses that feature.

That's right, but then cdrecord treats the image as sounddata only.
But actually it is a *complete* image of an audio-cd (including all

Hey World,
Let's start up a found to collect the money for big
Law Suites against Microsoft Monopoly playing Hardware
manufacturers.

In most cases the support for Linux is not done by the hardware
manufacturers, no those companies only deliver drivers and support
only for their products in the MS Windows Lines.

This is using the MS Monopoly and acts against the costumer interests,
so this status acts against me, you, and mostly all of those who read this.

If I understood the Microsoft act right, the major point was Microsoft used out
their monopoly against the customers.

The same argument hits against manufacturers, who only delivers Microsoft
compilant drivers.
For example: GDI Printers from Canon, Lexmark, HP,
Winmodems, ISDN Cards, Networkcards, Webcams, Joysticks and many others.

Facit: This Hits all of us.

Let's search for a strong Lawyer firm, open up a Found to do civil acts against
those Hardware companies, who do not support dan deliver Linux Driver Modules.

To deliver Driver modules would so easy, just put the few kilobytes of binary
modules onto the Website, write a INSTALL doc and setup the knowledge
for the callcenters... and all will be happy.

For example: Graphics, with OpenGL Hardware could be offered as Binary
Module Kit for XFree 4.x.y without giving any source away.

For Example: Modem, Winmodem: offer a binary Module, which gives us a
Serial port emulator i.e. /dev/ttyWinModem0 to use...

For Example: Printer, any PRINTER may be supported with a small binary
module for Ghostscript and a PostScript PPD, this module must only
be able to translate the GS binary raster to the printer.

For example: any other Hardware may be represented by a simple
module.

So, today it is much cheaper to ignore the Linuxers.

Such a Foundation like I suggest my stop this. Answer any company on the
world which only supports Windows (Acer, Winmodems, ATI, DVD Player companies,
and many other) with a expensive LawSuite, according to the Lawsuite against
Microsoft.

Let's make it VERY expensive to the companies only to support Microsoft OSs.

The target is to get our favorite Hardware Supported.

I will personally donate the first US $1000, if this idea comes true.

Subject: Tex Question
Date: Mon, 24 Jul 2000 15:56:31 -0400

I searched the news groups and could not find one that has Tex or LaTex
in its name so I thought I would try this news group. I need to create a
document with line numbers sort of like this:

1 Blah blah
                     etc
                     etc
                     etc
5 Blah Blah

The key here is line numbers in the left margin every 5 lines so that
folks can refer to line number 45 and everyone knows what that is. I
have poked around in the LaTex and Tex docs and do not see how to do
this. So can someone provide me with the right incantation that will
accomplish this? Or better yet, does any one have a patent application
style defined that I could use??

Thanks, Dave

Subject: Automating Linux Driver/Module Compilation Using GNU Automake/Autoconf
Date: Mon, 24 Jul 2000 16:00:22 -0400

Hi,

Does anyone know how to write the GNU automake (Makefile.am) script to just
compile a source code (C programs) as a linux driver/module? Here is the
scenario:

I have created several files, i.e. file1.c, file2.c, file.h. These files
when
get compiled will produce a Linux driver for some I/O devices. So far, I
have
the configure.in made from issuing the "autoscan". I also have created the
Makefile.am which consists of the following lines:

  bin_PROGRAMS = file
  file_SOURCES = file1.c file2.c file.h

I also have executed "aclocal; automake; autoconf" to generate the
configuration files, Makefile.in, and Makefile. When I typed "make", it
compiled file1.c, file2.c, and created the "file" program. What I want is
to
create a driver/module "file.o" for Linux kernel. Does anyone have any idea
what I should include in the Makefile.am to tell the GNU automake and
autoconf
just to compile and create a driver/module for Linux kernel?

TIA.

You must read the readme.

Youmust install SOffice (SO) as root, with the -net option.
This installs the 200 or so MB of stuff whereever you tell it to.
Then you must make sure that it is readable by all
chmod -R a+rX staroffice-directory
Then each user must run staroffice-directory/program/setup
to install about 2MB of files in thier own directory.
If you did not use the -net option, you must erase it all, and reinstall
as root with the -net option. Optionally you can have each user install
all 250MB of stuff into their own directory.

It does not. You must use -net rather than /net on a unix system.
(Not setup, you have to run that awful ....bin program which you
downloaded with the -net option for SO 5.2)
