Only if they come down your PPP link, in which case you could expect to
get very little done until you fixed your network.
Ethernet is a broadcast medium: every packet is everywhere (unless you
switch :)). It would be really bad to do that to a dialup PPP line:
every packet on your ethernet would be crammed down your line at 28kbps
or so. You may be able to make your network do that by screwing with
whatever you're dialing into, but it would quickly make your connection
unusable.

I am not disputing that if you take the machine to pieces
you can gain access to its data. The question is whether
you can gain root access without taking the machine apart.
My contention is that it is possible to maintain security
in this situation.

The advice about not "upgrading" is valid. Each distribution does things
differently enough that you are better off with a clean install.
Personally, I find debian to be much better than RH or SuSE or Caldera.
The latter three are all similar and very hard to maintain.

Hallo!
Since my last Login on my SuSE Linux 6.1 the Line with Login: repeats after
typing Name+RETURN.
On ALT-F10 I get the Message "cant execute /bin/login". While starting the
rescue system the login works and the File /bin/login can be executed.
Has anyone got an idea?

Yes, by a large factor. Apache is slow.

Do you install the glibc-devel package ? It contains the headers files
necessary to compile any C program.

A followup to this option. Tech America has a 140W continous inverter on sale

On the PIC mailing list where I live, one of the members has a working Linux

Dear Unix people,
I am using Redhat 5.1. When logged in as root, if I try
to run Glint I get the following messages
Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: Client is not authorized to connect to Server

I get a similar message when trying to run xrpm as root.

self.tk = _tkinter.create(screenName, baseName, className)
TclError: couldn't connect to display ":0.0"
There seems to be a general problem running X-apps as root, but the above
are the only ones I would typically need to run.
Can anyone tell me what I need to do? I see that it seems to involve
tcl-tk and python in some way but know nothing about either. A copy of any
response sent to [EMAIL PROTECTED] would be much appreciated.
Sincerely, Faheem Mitha.

I've been runnin Redhat for a couple version (5.0 to 6.0), and I've
noticed somthign that vastly annoys me-if you alter /etc/issue, it
will change back to the default after rebooting. Does anyone know
what's doing this, and how to stop it? I'm guessing it's one of the
scripts in /etc/rc.*, and I'm thinking that changing the script will
do it, butI'm not sure...
