Jamie,

You're absolutely right. I didn't read the rest of the posts. For some
reason, deja wouldn't let me trace the thread all the way back last
night, but now it will. Sorry for posting without knowing the whole
story. I was only trying to help.

However, under Red Hat 6.0, the font problem DOES cause Netscape to
crash without fail. It is more than a font redrawing problem that causes
Netscape to hang. Once I fixed my font path, I have had absolutely to
trouble with Java and Netscape.

Moreover, I just wanted to point out that it isn't always the browser
that is at fault because this thread was starting to degrade into
browser bashing.

Once again, sorry for the inconvenience. Since I'm not running Slackware
and I no longer have the problem, I can't be of any more assistance.

Good luck.

Quincy

Mirabilis has a Java version that allegedly works on Linux. I've never
used it, and apparently it's pretty buggy. My recommendation is to try

http://www.portup.com/~gyandl/icq/

where you will find lots of Linux icq projects in various stages of
development, including (of course) some designed for KDE and Gnome.

*Caveat: many of these are not official. What that means is that you will
need to use an "official" icq client such as (but not necessarily) the
Mirabilis client your first time in order to initially register and get an
icq number. It will ask you if you'd like to register when you run the
executable. After you have an icq number, you can use whatever client you
want.

That depends on whether or not you're running X-Windows. If you are
running X, you have two options. One, download the Java version of ICQ
from the ICQ web site and download the JDK from blackdown.org. I
wouldn't recommend the Java version, because it's slow and very buggy.
The other option is to go to www.freshmeat.net and download one of the
many linux ICQ clones like GtkICQ, LICQ or kICQ if you're running KDE.
If you're just using the text console, there are other console-only
options at freshmeat.net.

If you think game theory created by von Neumann is "magic", well.
BTW, the computer on which you type the article has von Neumann's

It isn't enough to do an 'mke2fs /dev/fd0u1722', you have to low-level
format it first. If the disk is _already_ 1722, this would seem to
work, but on a 1.44 floppy, it would _not_ work.

You have to use "superformat" or "fdformat" to do the low-level format.

With ip-masquerading and vmware (configured as host-only) you
can let it run under a virtual win9x-environment.
(I don't know anything about bridged-networking, but this should
work, too).

Subject: My kernel doesn't detect my Western Digital 20.4 gig HD
Date: Sat, 07 Aug 1999 17:55:36 GMT

First, here's my system configuration:
P2-350
288 megs of RAM
ATI All-in-Wonder PRO AGP
Sound Blaster AWE64 Gold
56k WinModem
Linksys 10/100 Ethernet Card
Creative Labs DXR2 PCI MPEG Decoder
Maxtor 8.4 gig Hard Drive (hda)
Creative Labs DVD (hdb)
Mitsumi CRW4802TE (hdc)
Western Digital 2.04 Gig UDMA/66 (hdd)

For OS's, I'm dual booting Windows 98 SE and Linux Mandrake 6.0 with
all of the updates. My hard drive layouts are like this:
Maxtor:
7 Meg ext2 partition for /boot
3 gig vfat partition for Win98SE
1.5 gig ext2 partition for /
3.5 gig extended partition containing:
  125 meg linux swap partition
  125 meg ext2 partition for /tmp
  125 meg ext2 partition for /root
3+ gig vfat partition for shared data

WD:
19 gig vfat partition for shared data

Until last week, I have been running a linux kernel with Frame Buffer
support, because I couldn't get my ATI card to work in normal mode.
With that kernel, everything worked perfectly, my sound card, my video
card, my ethernet card, even both hard drives. Last week, I read a
message that suggested a way that I might get my ATI card working in
normal mode...I just had to unplug the video out from the card. I
recompiled my kernel without frame buffer support to see if it would
work. The message was correct, I was able to get my ATI card working
without FB support, but I was unable to mount my Western Digital
drive. Since last week, I have been recompiling kernels left and right
trying to figure out what I could've switched to make it not work. I
still have the old kernel with Frame Buffer support, and the hard drive
is detected perfectly with it. I've tried making new kernels with
frame buffer support, and turning on/off DMA support, modularizing
everything or building everything in, and nothing seems to work. I
guess I have two questions. First, has anyone else had this problem,
and could you suggest a solution? And two, is there any way to remake
a .config file from a kernel that you have compiled? I usually save
my .config files whenever I recompile a new kernel, just in case things
don't work, but I must have overwritten the one that had that magical
switch in it. Thank you in advance for any replies.

(First, sorry for the cross-postings, but I'm not sure where this
question belongs, and I need help with it soon....)

I'm finding something very odd on my SuSE 6.1 Linux system. Every day
that I log in, I lose another 2% of my root ( / ) directory! Two days
ago when I did the df command, I saw 56% in the Capacity column.
Yesterday it was 58%. Today, 60%... space is just dwindling and I
can't figure out what's doing it! KDE leaves behind a LOT of junk in
my /tmp directory, prinarily a bunch of zero-byte files. But, even
when I clear those out, the figure doesn't change. This happened once
before, when I suddenly found my root direcory filled to 100%
capacity. I re-did my entire system, and this time I'm a bit smarter:
I'm watching the space dwindle day by day. I do *NOT* want to have to
re-do my entire system again. Would someone be so kind as to give me
some tips on where to look in my directories, or tell me what's
causing this and what to do to remedy it? It has me baffled.

I'm using SuSE linux 6.1, with KDE as my window manager. I have my
drive partitioned as follows:

/boot 7 megs
/ 100 megs
/home 100 megs
/opt 750 megs
/usr 1 gigabyte

and a 64 meg swap partition.

Help would be greatly appreciated. If some file is growing, or I'm
getting other temp files thrown somewhere that I don't know about, I'd
like to know about it, so I can keep an eye on this and hopefully keep
this partition from getting 100% full again.

Oh, I also noticed one file called kcore. Not sure if that's another
KDE file that's perhaps growing (I just discovered it this morning, in
poking around my directories in Midnight Commander), but I'm keeping
an eye on it as well.

Thanks in advance,
Ray

You can manually edit that .config file. Say you
have some lines in .config file
 #CONF_BLA_BLA is not set
which corresponds to whatever you NOW want to enable. You should
change it to
 #CONF_BLA_BLA=y

Note that 'm' instead of 'y' should be ok. Even 'n' will do but I have
not tried it.

When you are done with editing it run
        make oldconfig

Things will fly by you until you hit that above line. make will
prompt you for an answer.

Put the action you want to perform in a 'trap' statement in the
/etc/bashrc file. The signal 0 or EXIT is trapped and executed
as the shell exits for any reason (except a kill -9).

You "set -o ignoreeof" or set IGNOREEOF=10. This way, ^D cannot be used to
get out of the shell, and the user has no choice but to use the "exit"
command. I suppose if someone really knew what they were doing (that is,
understood shell programming), they could easily work around this as well,
but for that matter, they could work around the normal local .bash_logout
technique as well, right?

How are you logging out? You should be using the log out entry

Are you trying to compile it as C++ (the function name
looks a bit mangled to me). If you are you will need
to put extern "C" before the declaration of printk.

don't know if this will help but I also use kde and have found that when
email is deleted from within kde,
it is not really deleted. to confirm that deletion actually takes place,
check your Mail (notice Capitol M) directory thru an nxterm window, and
then rm the inbox, then touch inbox to recreate.
I also have had problems with LARGE core files, these are programs that
crash, I think. There is a way to find out which and why these programs
crash, but I haven't done any investigating, I did read somewhere that
you can create a directory in your ~/home , named core, this fine system
we call linux will not create another file with the same name, therefore
no more core files

Set 'em up on different partitions like you did and use a boot manager.
Either use lilo for booting your different partitions or use another type
of partition manager like the Ranish Partition Manager (which I use) and
put lilo on the supperblock of each of the partitions (to load the kernel).
