Reading through some of the config files they make reference to colours being something
like 'SkyBlue', 'DarkGray' etc.
Is there a list of these colors somewhere so I can configure Xwindows to my own
colours.
Please point me to resources or help where I can find this myself (I HAVE tried looking
but with no luck!!!)
Thanks.

FWIW, I run a "network" over a parallel port cable. My work computer
is an IBM ThinkPad, with a token ring card. My home network is
ethernet. One home computer runs OS/2 and the other Linux. The
ThinkPad is also OS/2. My set up consists of the parallel port lan
between the ThinkPad and the home OS/2 system and with the home OS/2
computer set up as a router to the Linux system. It works well.
With my home and work OS/2 systems, I can also dial in to work and get
access to most of the servers etc.

Hi,
I can't get my original sb16 (CT2291) to work in full duplex mode. The
sound card is installed properly and the irq, dma's and io ports are
identified correctly.
I suspect that the application (speak freely) I'm using is trying to use
the same dma as the other application. In this case it would be
sfspeaker for the output and sfmike for the input. I tried to use the
ALSA driver, which worked after I set the Recording to 8 bit.
My question is, can I set the recording generally to 8 bit with the
driver included in the kernel 2.2.9. If not, what else can I do ?
Thanks

If you have WinZip, it will handle gzip'd tarballs. Just pull down the
filetype list and select tar etc. Otherwise, you might look at
www.delorie.com. tar, gunzip, etc. have all been ported to DOS, and this
site will point you to a mirror where you can d'load the DOS bins.

If it only gives blank pages you are probably out of ink. If there is a few
garbage characters at the top you must have shut off the printer after it
started. Rebooting the system ain't going to fix this as it remembers where
it left off at ( a nasty bug I would say). You can use lprm to remove entries
in the queue.

See rgb.txt as mentioned in your XF86Config file. You want to define
a new color, like 'puce' ? Put that color-name in the rgb.txt file
with your RGB values. Run X and try 'xterm -bg puce'.

Pardon me? I paid $29.95 for Red Hat 5.2; Windows 98 in the next bin
was $79.95. Another $29.95 for Red Hat 6.0 seems quite reasonable. For
that matter, you _can_ get it for free, if you don't need the nice

So I put RH6 on a clean partition, having decided to blow away my 5.1
instead of upgrading. After the install, I have a very nice system;
however, I have a few issues that I need a little help with:
*) RealPlayer 5, Linux ELF version (which I use because the
rpm version for RH doesn't include NS plugin support), does not work,
failing on write() to /dev/dsp. All my other sound programs (sox,
xemacs, etc) work fine. Thoughts?
*) When I enable sounds in Gnome and/or Enlightenment, they seem to
lock the sound driver so that no other program can play sounds?
*) Gnome does not seem completely there ... I don't have an actual
"desktop," though I do have the panel. I also don't seem to have
the thing they call the "file manager." Any suggestions (other
than to verify all my gnome rpm's, which I'll try right now) ?
Thanks, and please cc: replies via email...

I'd check this but my external network access is shafted, but isn't Open
Source a registered trademark? If so, I'm not sure why it's not more
rigorously enforced in cases such as Apple's (and Al Gore :-) ). Or maybe
it's down to a lack of money to pursue such cases. Hey ho.

Subject: basic installation questions
Date: Sun, 23 May 1999 11:07:48 -0500
This will be somewhat lengthy, I apologize in advance.
1. I've installed RedHat 5.2 with the default packages, not having any
idea what I'd need, figuring I could always add later on, should I
decide I needed something not installed. However, after spending several
weeks playing with this trying to get it configured, with no luck, I've
decided to completely reinstall, choosing to install everything on the
CD installation disk, to avoid further complications. So the question
is: If I use Partition Magic to delete the existing Linux partitions,
it's still going to leave LILO in the master boot record, correct? Can I
leave that in there and just reinstall RedHat or do I need to fdisk the
MBR, delete the existing version of RedHat, and install, or can I simply
re-install RedHat over the top of the existing version? I have not been
able to get anything configured, so anything overwritten won't be
missed.
2. I'll be installing on my 12 gig harddrive, partitioning it with
PartitionMagic. From the reading I've done, they all say I should have
AT LEAST 500M of space dedicated to Linux, but with my hard drive, I've
obviously got room to spare. With this going on a dual-boot machine also
running Win95, which will be my primary OS for at least a while longer,
how should I size my partitions. If I were to install everything
included on the CD, plus leave room to spare for adding applications
later down the road, what would you think would be the MOST I'd use, in
a typical situation? I have no programming experience, doubt I'll ever
get into that, so this will be more just a basic desktop computer, using
the most common applications.
3. From the overwhelming amount of reading I've been doing on Linux, I'm
beginning to understand the RedHat is a great distro, though not
particularly suited to newbies. I want to learn RedHat eventually,
however, if after installation, I decide I'm having problems with RedHat
and want to try installing a copy of Caldera I have, how do I go about
setting that up? So do I compeletely remove all Linux partitions, fdisk
the MBR, and then repartition and install Caldera?

Hi,
I'm not new to Linux but am stumped and need some help. I just upgraded
to RH6.0, or at least tried to. The upgrade failed with a Sig 11.
Anyway, system did come up in a hybrid state, duplicate packages, both
old and new versions, etc. So, I decided to reinstall using RH6.0.
Yes, stupid thing to do but at least I have backed up all the
essentials. Anyway, I tried to install RH6.0 from scratch and it failed
with Sig 11. I thought, maybe there is a problem with 6.0 so I tried to
install 5.2 and the same, failed with SIG 11. Now I can't boot into
linux at all. I'm stumped since I didn't have any problems with the
system at all prior to the upgrade. I compiled kernels fine without Sig
11 problems. Does anyone have any clue as to what might b causing the
problem?
Thanks,

Look for a file named 'rgb.txt' on your system (here, it's in
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/rgb.txt). It contains the names and corresponding
RGB values.

What do you mean by this. Is this like warehouse management systems
where you are tracking inventory.
Are you responcible for the hardware that the system runs on. What kind
of systems do your existing/potential customers have. Will your system
have to be compatible. Are you offering a total solution or just a
software solution. What kind of support do you intend to have, 24/7
support(expensive).
Are you looking for a stable platform to build systems on/around.Linux
is stable and there are many excellent development languages to use for
eg c,c++,perl, python to name a few.
> (2) What model(s) should we avoid?
That really depends on the kind of service you are offering. Are you
offering a one size fits all solution or a general solution to be
tailored to your customers. Remenber though most of the work invoved in
programming is system maintence you have to factor thAt into the cost
equation. At the end of the day most business want a quaility, reliable
service and will pay for it.
> (3) What source code access is appropriate or necessary?
If you make the source code open it should be so that you can fix
problems easily or get in outside help without too much difficulty.
The problem with giving the source away is that you give it to your
competitors, so have a good NDA. This really depends on weather you are
selling a product or a service. There's more money in maintence
contracts for software and hardware than there is in selling software.
You can only sell a package once, you can maintain it all the time.
Customers get really annyoed for paying for an upgrade to software just
to get the bug fixes, Win98 a prime example of this.
well good luck to you I hope things go well for you.
