Win98 is not significantly different to Win95. The integration of IE4
can be achieved by installing IE4 on Win95. It is still DOS with too
many extensions. We have taken Win98 off all the new machines here as
the changes seem to make it worse, especially in a non Internet
environment.

I'm trying to set up Red Hat 6.0, upgraded to the 2.2.9 kernel, on my
old Thinkpad 560E. I don't seem to be able to get the sound to work,
either using the out-of-the box kernel, or using the recompiled 2.2.9
kernel with all the relevant sound modules enabled.

Any hints will be appreciated.

Actually, it's far more complicated than that. _Unauthorized Windows95_
gives a pretty good overview of the situation.

(1) Windows may run on top of DOS, but has significant value-added
functionality as well, and qualifies as an OS in its own right.

(2) DOS *knows about Windows*. INT 21 or 27, AX=1605, I think
to startup; there's also a shutdown. A little bizarre, perhaps.

(3) Windows bypasses DOS on occasion to talk directly to the BIOS --
    or to the hardware.

(4) And of course Windows thunks like crazy from 32 to 16 bit code.

(5) Every Win95 process has a conventional memory PSP segment.

That's from memory. But I'll admit, without DOS, Windows probably
wouldn't get very far. :-)

I'm pretty sure Win98 doesn't change this relationship much.

None of the above. The client is simply optimized to run on Intel
hardware. For reference, I get about 1.2mkeys/sec on a PII-450 and
about 405kkeys/sec on a K6-233 (RedHat 5.2).

The technology research firm ILLUMINATA recently put our a research note
entitled "Measuring Microprocessor Muscle."

An abstract is available at
http://www.illuminata.com/public/all/categories.cgi/alllist.html

The entire document can be downloaded from the Q's website (sorry, don't
have the specific URL at hand). It's worth a read.

There's also a slew of Alpha-related information in the back issues of
my newsletter archived at http://www.acersoft.com. This information is
more Alpha-focused, although there is some comparative data.

Nobody; however, as the usual way to get to the files is via links on web
pages. AFAIK, WP for Linux is NOT available on the usual Linux ftp sites.
The symptom the original poster reported is usually caused by using
Netscape to download the file.

You can claim "user error," but the design of the links on Corel's web
site makes it plain that they EXPECT users to download WP for Linux using
a web browser. There are no instructions there to Shift-click to do it,
either. IMHO, blame on this one does *NOT* belong at the user's feet, but
at Netscape's and Corel's.

(BTW, there are a LOT of postings about this problem, and the cause
usually ends up being precisely what I said it was. This isn't an
isolated incident.)

I'm trying to get a parallel port ZIP drive tow ork under
Red Hat 6.0. I've been told that support is already compiled
into modules that are ready to go.

I'm running kernel 2.2.5-15smp on a dual Pentium Pro system.

The error:
# /sbin/insmod ppa
  /lib/modules/2.2.5-15smp/scsi/ppa.o:
  unresolved symbol parport_release_Rsmp_9d40304f

  unresolved symbol parport_register_device_Rsmp_f7874119
  unresolved symbol parport_unregister_device_Rsmp_1f259fe5

I don't have a printer attached, so I haven't been using the parallel
port for anything. Is there a module I need to load for hte parallel
port?

The motherboard is an Intel Providence PR440FX.

Well, it looked like I just needed to do a little more
experimentation...

Here's what I found:

1. The modem was working before I configured my soundcard.
2. When I configured my soundcard with sndconfig, it created
/etc/isapnp.conf, which is used by isapnp on system
        startup.
3. On system startup, isapnp tries to configure both the
soundcard and the modem. The modem was already
configured by the hardware to com2 02F8 IRQ3. The
        second configuration by isapnp failed.
4. The FIX: I edited /etc/isapnp.conf and commented out
*all* lines dealing with the configuration of the
modem. In my case, the modem was Card 2, so I
commented all lines from "# Card 2:..." to
"# End tag..." ( Commenting out just "(ACT Y)"
        does not work! )

Yes, it does. The current GNOME (from gnome.org) does tell dsp to
unlock /dev/dsp after a couple seconds of silence, which works much
better. I have no idea where in GNOME this is being executed, though,
so you may just want to check to see if your 'gnome-core' and other
logical candidates are current with what's on gnome.org.

if there were a consensus favorite there would only be one distro. I have
been using RH4 for over 2 years now and the only real drawback is that it
cannot be easily upgraded (to RH5 or 6) as they originally claimed.

For that reason (and a few others) I will seriously consider Debian when I

How old is the drive? It sounds like you have some kind of physical error
on the drive itself. SCSI has gotten popular again and the quality of the
drives has really decreased. If you have a Win9x partition you could run
Scandisk in thourough mode or just make a DOS bootdisk with the dos
version of Scandisk on it.
