=================================================================
This is the Linux Counter summary as of Sun Apr 30 17:09:28 2000
There are 143272 persons registerd.
3023 users have been registered by friends.
There are 75216 machines registered.
I guesstimate that between 0.2% and 5% of all Linux users have
registered with the Linux Counter.
So the total number of Linux users is probably between
2,865,440 and 71,636,000 people.

No.
No IP addresses, no wildcards, no aliases. FQDN (fully qualified
domain names) only, or if you are using /etc/hosts, the first name
on the line for a given IP address.

Hi,
Does anyone know if Windows-Linux is any good? It seems that all it does
is put an icon on your windows desktop that allows you to start linux -
then to get into windows again - you have to reboot. Is that essentially
all there is to it? or is there something more?
Thanks

After I installed Redhat linux 6.1,there appears a message on the screen
when booting:
'Find module dependencies can't open

What does this mean? How can I fix this problem?

Subject: linux installation problem with Xwindows
Date: Mon, 01 May 2000 01:30:05 GMT
I followed the normal procedures in installing
the Xwindows systems but when I entered into the Xwindow desktop (Gnome or
KDE) all
the words on the screen are simply blacked out.Let me be specific: there
seems to be
a blackbox masking wherever the words and the messages appear.Things are
just there
but they just do not display correctly.I think something related to the
displaying
function may have gone wrong (may be font?).
I do not think this problem is due to a bad cd-rom because I tried two
different
copies of Redhat and the problem still remains. My installing procedures
are
correct, I think.
I can hardly do anything if I cannot read the messages on the screen so
please give
me your advice.

Subject: Re: Good Contact Manager for Linux
You would think some of the Big Boys in the Linux World would have already
developed one by now.
One that could compete with ACT, Outlook or some of the others mentioned.
Several years ago I used an old version of ACT and really liked it. I have been
using Outlook for the last couple of years and have grown quite dependent on it.
I run Linux and Windows on my laptop and really hate having to switch back and
forth.
Maybe REDHAT, IBM, Caldera, Suse, ete will see this message and start develop
one.
Yea, RIGHT

I changed the following line in /etc/inittab, this allows me to
Ctrl-Alt-Del shutdown from the login prompt. For a single user
machine this is a convenience:
======= in /etc/inittab =====================
# Trap CTRL-ALT-DELETE
ca::ctrlaltdel:/sbin/shutdown -t3 -h now
=============================================
If you use X a lot you might consider adding the following lines
to the end of your ~/.bash_profile file. This will let you boot
into runlevel 3, and do root maintenance at runlevel 3. As soon
as you login as a user you bring up X. Yet if you login from
another computer via telnet, you will not bring up X.
======= in ~/.bash_profile ==================
# start X on login
if [ $TERM = "linux" ]
then
startx >~/.startx.out 2>&1
exit
fi

Subject: recompiling the kernel
Date: Sun, 30 Apr 2000 18:56:35 -0700
I have recompiled the kernel about 5 times. The Kernel version showing in
the
terminal window upon reboot still shows the old version 2.2.13-0.13 The
Kernel I am trying to recompile is
kernel 2.2.12-45SAP. Why am I not getting the version number of the new
kernel that I just compiled.
(I know this kernel version appears to be a step back but This kernel
conatins
modifications that I need.)
Here are the commands that I have been running.
1. I copy the rpm containing the kernel to the proper location /usr/src.
I then unpack the rpm.
2. I run the command
# make dep; make clean; make; make modules; make modules_install
in the directory /usr/src
3. In the /usr/src/linux-2.2.12-45SAP directory i run
# Make bzlilo; make bzdisk
4. then I copy the files vmlinuz and System.map from the / directory to the
/boot directory.
5. then I make a new symbolic link to the two files I just copied to the
/boot dir vmlinuz and System.map
6. Then I run a #uname -v and I get todays date (the date that I recompiled
the kernel).
Am I supposed to copy the /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot/zImage file to
/boot/vmlinuz?
When I reboot I look in the /usr/src/linux-2.2.12-45SAP/Makefile the top of
this files shows the old
kernel version number.
Am I leaving out a step?? What am I missing??
This hard disk is a Windows NT Linux Red Hat dual boot. So to boot to linux
I must use a boot disk.
Is there a problem with making a new boot disk? Am I creating a boot disk
with the old kernel?

Subject: Corel Linux "make install"???
Date: Sun, 30 Apr 2000 21:47:47 -0700
I have recently installed Corel Linux on my old desktop machine. I wanted to
install some third party source package, X-ISP. I unzipped it, etc, and went
until the step where I was told to browse to the directory and type "make"
and then "make install." I browsed to the directory, and after typing in
"make," I got the following error:
bash: make: command not found
I got similiar results from "make install."
Please help, but be as simplistic as possible in the instructions, as I am
relatively new using Linux.
Thanks in advance for the help

I managed to lock myself out of my own computer when I was first
experimenting with security. I reasoned that I could lock the
whole network down, then open up only what I needed. Unfortunately
X is network based, so it didn't work -- at all.
Are you setting up ipchains before dialing out? Have you inadvertantly
locked up X's network access?
HTH, at least it's another way to look at the problem ...

Hey all:
I've justed compiled kernel 2.2.14 and NFSD is complaining when it starts.
It says: nfssvc function not implemented.
Any idea which module I need here?
