RMS is too smart for that. He's winning, anyways, without spending hundreds
of thousands of dollars working on a legal battle that would be based on VERY
shakey grounds. Fact is, open source produces better code than closed source.
Besides, there's no money in the software - the real money is in setting up
the software and providing support for it. Microsoft is having a terrible
trying to compete with us, firstly Linux is free, secondly it's better written
and thirdly our development cycle is much faster than there's. As soon as a
non-biased study shows greater performance of NT over Linux in any fashion,
patches are quickly written and Linux becomes faster than NT.

I'm assuming that you want to share an internet connection here...
if that is true, than what you want to do is setup IP Masqurading, and get
the newest IP chains software. There are various HOWTOs out there on
setting it up. You can get IPchains off of www.freshmeat.net.
Also you should probably grab masqdialer. Masqdialer will let you dial the
modem on your Linux box from any other computer on your network. There are
clients for masqdialer for just about every OS out there...it's pretty
easy to set up too. Again you can get masqdialer off of www.freshmeat.net.
Just use the search engine at the top of the page...if you have any
questions, feel free to email me.

are you using a S3 or a S3 Virge? A colleague of mine had this problem
with a S3 Virge - search on dejanews for remedies. In her case it didn't
help and she got a S3 (non virge). One cheap and easy way around this is
to set the default runlevel to 5.

Didn't know where to post this question...
Does there exist an OS with these characteristics?
- completely 32-bit
- runs in protected mode
- single user
- singletasking
- single processor
- command line interface
The closest that fits the above are DOS (but not 32-bit/protected mode)
and Minix (but not singletasking or single user). Any others I have
missed?

No, it does not. This is the main reason for me to go out and warned
the Linux users... because most of them, if not all, believe that the
warranty is a contract which must be honored independently of the OS
issue.
ljb> Otherwise this becomes

Agreed.

But has I said I proposed them many ways to honor their warranty
including giving my credit card number and shipping the drive so
that they could test it. The answer: No way sir, we do not support
Linux!
Well I do not know what they are thinking this week, but I have been
answering emails since Tuesday almost all day long. And these emails I
had received from the many Iomega Linux users, some them are not
small home pc users...
The issue of supporting actively Linux is one. But to try and
invalidate a warranty because you do not run M$. Well that is
another story...and I do not buy it!
Cheers,
Dominic.

Try this shell command
echo '^[[10;500]^[[11;1000]'
where '^[' denotes the escape character, which can be typed by
pressing Ctrl-v followed by ESC in bash. This sets the PC speaker
bell sound to 500Hz, duration 1000ms. Substitute suitable values and
have fun. My friend and I have written a few perl scripts to play
simple songs. :) [ Hint: echo ^G to ring the bell, and use the
'sleep' command/perl function to introduce a suitable delay ]
dpuryear> I recieved several email replies to this. They all

dpuryear> when in X. For instance, if I am in xterm or xemacs I

dpuryear> the pitch?
It doesn't work in X, because xterm uses the XBell function to
"display" the Ctrl-G (BELL) character. To achieve the effect, try to
set the bell volume, frequency and duration with 'xset'.
xset b 100 1000 50
sets the X bell sound to volume 100 (full), frequency 1000Hz and
duration 50ms. Read 'man xset' for details. (You can even put the
monitor into standby mode using newer versions of 'xset'.)
After that, do a
echo ^G
to test the bell sound, where ^G is the Ctrl-G (BELL) character, which
can be typed in bash using the key sequence Ctrl-v Ctrl-g.
Exercise: Write a shell script to play "we wish you a merry christmas". :P

Complete fantasy in fact. As you surmise as device demand goes up so
does the possibility of clashes on a shared interrupt. I fact IBM
decided VERY early on that, with OS/2 at least, interrupts will not be
shared. Consequently this sort of issue doesn't arise.
Another thing worth trying is turning Java off within netscape.

You probably have binaries compiled against different C-libraries. One is
probably glibc2 and the other (glquake?) is probably libc5. You will need
to get the correct version of glquake.

It shouldn't, but you may have to restart X to make it notice that. I
do a ctrl-alt-backspace from xdm to do that.
I think the real problem here, though is something else entirely:

help?
I recieved several email replies to this. They all suggested I use
setterm. However, this does not work when in X. For instance, if I am
in xterm or xemacs I get the default high beep. How would I globably
change the pitch?

Apparently not. Thanks. That solved my problem.

Oki, thanks. Have been playing around a bit with it. Am using only the -O2
option right now to be able to install the binaries on both the K6 machine and
Pentium machines.
Do you have any suggestions about the best default option for K6, Pentium and
Pentium II/III?
>You may want to hack your /usr/lib/rpmrc ;)
Have been doing so. I did compile rpm v3.x and that uses a macro file instead
of rpmrc. The only problem is that it is real har do find any good
documentation for rpmrc and the macro file about the options. The defaul
macros file is at least better than the defaul rpmrc file in that it contains
much more options so it is easier to find the ones I want to change.

Nope.
This link may be of use, though:
http://www.bieringer.de/linux/IPv6/
in particular, the IPv6-HOWTO.
The hort answer is yes, Linux supports IPv6. The onger answer is yes,
but you'll have to do some work, like replacing a lot of network
tools.
