Subject: 2.2.11 Trouble ..
Date: Thu, 12 Aug 1999 10:58:14 +0200

Hi!

We have a machine running Squid (Proxy-server) on a Slackware 4-dist.
Yesterday I upgraded from 2.2.6 to 2.2.11, after that two thing has
happened.

1. Every time I boot, I get "System Table has incorrect version number".
I've checked System.map and it's the same new file since I recompiled
the kernel in /System.map /boot/System.map /usr/src/linux/System.map

The vmlinuz-kernel is in "/". What is the solution ?

2. After about 1 hour's uptime the machine stops with the following
error:
"Not enough memory for xxx" where xxx is the process that's trying to do
something. For example, I try to login in to the console, I get "Not
enough memory for agetty". If someone tries to telnet it I get telnetd.

Please, I need some fast help with this. Please answer via _EMAIL_ since
I don't read this newsgroup regular.

Thanks ..

Only of the OS allows it to.

(Hint: on a proper OS, userland programs can't do everything, including
changing status registers on the CPU.)

I sence some confusion between the loop driver used to mount file
systems contained in a disk file

and the network loopback; something quite different. The network
loopback is normaly always a resident kernel and not a module, as
this driver is always expected to be up.

I use Applixware from time to time and I've found it adequate
for my needs. It is usually not possible to import a typical
Word document, since Word by default saves files in a special
format which only it can read. It is possible to save Word
documents in the more generic Word format, and those documents
can be imported by Applix's word processor, at least most of
the time. Sometimes there are glitches with the imported file.
I have been able to import Excel .xls files produced by the
Office 97 version of Excel to the Applix spreadsheet.

Yes, they are more expensive then most. They are also well engineered,
thoroughly tested and compatible. Since you didn't mention a specific
alternative I can't be more specific. But, IMHO you get what you pay for.

Even under DOS it's a non-issue. DOS has a Y2048 problem (started
counting from Jan 1, 1980 rather than Jan 1, 1970). And even if the
BIOS's hardware clock can't count beyond the year 99, it's just an
issue of inconvenience (having to manually reset the system clock to
the proper time and date, because the system clock gets set from the
hardware clock). In fact, the TSR's under DOS are probably just doing
that anyways, translating dates to the proper ones automatically at
startup.

But at no time will it affect its booting capabilities.

In Unix, the current directory is usually not on the $PATH. You should
start your script with ./script to run. Or, alternatively, you might add
the current path to the *END* of your $PATH.

I can only speak from experience with the modems I've used.

The PCI-RAS4 lists two different IO addresses, plus an IRQ. To use
the lowest-numbered modem on the board, you pick one of the two IO
addresses (the second one) and the IRQ, and basically do something
like what you wrote above, except that you've also got to specify the
baud_base to deal with unconventional clocking. (The other modems are
specified by offsets to the base IO address.)

After doing the setserial on your system, does a simple call to
"setserial /dev/ttyS3" claim that it can identify the UART being used?
If so, you *might* just be having a baud_base sort of problem. If
that's the case, I'm not sure how to proceed without the help of
someone who knows that particular modem better.

(In the case of Chase Research, their web site describes how to use
their PCI modems under Linux, so we really didn't have to do any work
to get things up and running.)

US Robotics (now 3COM) use WinModem as an official term - and they are the
only modem manufacturer to actually label their winmodems as such.

I hope I haven't answered you before, but I've certainly
answered this question before.

This is a sporadic and known bug in the gnome session manager.
Check when you are logged in the file .xsession-errors. If
you find repeated references to the MIT MAGIC COOKIE, that is
what is causing the problem. It seems to be relatively infrequent
but once it occurs it will continue.

You can try upgrading the gnome-core and gnome-libs packages
which can be found on the gnome web page www.gnome.org. But
that didn't fix it on my laptop where it invariably occurs
just after booting to non-root users but only the first time
the user logs in.

I don't have /etc/sysconfig/net... on my system. But wouldn't that just
turn the loopback off. You might need the loopback to run certain
programs.

Why are you bringing the loopback up? The only time I ever messed with
the loopback was when I selected it to be compiled into the kernel. I
haven't thought about it since. Wait... one time to mount an iso image.

I would recompile the kernel with loopback compiled in NOT as a module.
Make sure you do a 'make modules modules_install' after building the
kernel. And kill the module modules.dep file and reboot. And forget
about the loopback and move on to something else. JMO
