You can study the example of Sergei Viznyuk's 'resque_disk':
http://metalab.unc.edu/pub/Linux/system/recovery/
there are other examples in the above directory, too. I was
able to follow Sergei's model and documentation to build a
custom single-diskette, (1.44M) with networking, resque-system.
Also, look under '/usr/src/linux/Documentation' for 'ramdisk.txt',
'initrd.txt, ... .
SuSE has a 'rescue.gz' (root-image) that can be used in conjunction
with their boot-install diskette. I think Slackware has this root-
image too. Check out your distribution, it may have something like
this. You'll probably have to prune stuff from 'rescue.gz' so that
everything fits on one diskette.
You might want to look at this Howto:
http://metalab.unc.edu/pub/Linux/docs/HOWTO/Bootdisk-HOWTO
it may be all that you need :-)

Try "man xmessage". You'll be looking for something like:
xmessage -display 12.34.56.78:0 "My Message"
Alternatively, it could be a permissions thing - see xhost if the above
trick doesn't work.

There may be another way, but best I know is you rebuild the kernel and select
VFAT support in the file system options.

Which kernel ? Type `uname -a` to know ! You should have 2.0.35 with Red
Hat 5.1 ! This kernel supports FAT32 (as vfat) ... so it's very amazing
that fdisk report "unknown" for your win98 partition type, and this has
certainly a link with lilo configuration error ...
What I can advise you, is to use an other multi boot manager, or use for
example a DOS tool called Loadlin that allow you to launch Linux from
DOS prompt !

I am trying to install Red Hat Linux 5.2 using the following options:
SMB option:
I have shared the cdrom on a WIN98 machine giving read only access to
everyone. The IP address of this machine is 192.168.103.50. and the name is
xyz. After using supplemental disk and partitioning i configured my network
adapter. For network configuration i chose the following options:
IP Address: 192.168.103.144
Netmask: 255.255.255.0 (same as that of WIN98 machine)
Default Gateway: 192.168.103.144
Primary Nameserver: 192.168.103.144
Domain Name: pqr
Host Name: abc.pqr
Secondary Name Server: None
Tertiary Name Server: None
SMB Server Name: xyz
Share Volume: cdrom
Account Name: None
Password: None
After this configuration i get the message "I could not mount that directory
from the server". The only way to come out of this is Ctrl+Alt+Del.
Ping to Linux machine gives the following output:

FTP option:
I have a WINNT 4.0 machine (Name: def, IP address 192.168.103.254, Subnet
Mask 255.255.255.0) which is a FTP server. Its cdrom is made a Virtual
Directory with name /cdrom. I have allowed read only anonymous access to
this.
After using supplemental disk and partitioning i configured my network
adapter. For network configuration i chose the following options this time:
IP Address: 192.168.103.135
Netmask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.103.135
Primary Nameserver: 192.168.103.135
Domain Name: pqr
Host Name: abc.pqr
Secondary Name Server: None
Tertiary Name Server: None
FTP Site Name: 192.168.103.254
Red Hat Directory: cdrom
i didnt choose the option "use non-anonymous FTP or a Proxy Server"
After this i was prompted for the list of packages to install and i chose
everything.
I got the message "I cannot get file
cdrom/RedHat/RPMS/setup-1.9.2-1.noarch.rpm: File not found on Server". When
i clicked OK i got the message "I m having trouble getting %s. Should i keep
trying?" I selected No. This time i got the message "I cannot get file
cdrom/RedHat/RPMS/filesystem-1.3.2-3.noarch.rpm: File not found on Server".
And so on. The only way to come out of this is Ctrl+Alt+Del.
When i used the follwing command "dir setup*.*" on my cdrom using my WINNT
4.0 machine i got the following list of files:
setup-1.9
setuptool-1.0-1
and the command "dir file*.*" gave me the following results:
file-3.25-2
filesystem-1.3
fileutils-3.16-10
When i use "ftp 192.168.103.254" from my WIN98 machine which i mentioned in
the SMB option i can login using the following information:
User: anonymous
Password: none
Here i can browse all my directories. I used the following command "cd
/cdrom/redhat/rpms" and it worked well. It also displays the list of rpm
packages using the command ls. But here also the same names are displayed
which i saw using the command "dir *.*" on my WINNT machine.
Pinging my Linux machine from my WINNT machine gives the following result:
Pinging 192.168.103.135 with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 192.168.103.135: bytes=32 time<10ms TTL=64

You don't say which kind it is, but, with a 1 gig drive, it is probably
a Sparc of some kind. OpenBSD is what I run on my sparcs (wish there were
a FBSD suite.....(:+{{.....). It loads fine, and runs out of the box.
The all in the monitor thing I am thinking is an X terminal, although
you can reset the prom contents at one location and it becomes a regular

I have tried Limux on my IPX Sparcs, and it does fine, but, it loads
everything but the kitchen sink from RedHat6. I prefer the leaner
OpenBSD load, usually. I can't comment on Solaris, other than it is
SLOOOOOOW, compared to OpenBSD, or even Linux.

OpenBSD 2.5 is stable. Linux RH6 is stable.
I load mine with either from a FBSD box with a CD, via ftp. Works fine.
Mount the CD on the FBSD box, and then ftp when it calls for the files.
If the scsi drive is generally OK, the OpenBSD will load fine. IFF there
are formatting errors on the scsi drive, you may need to format it on
something else, low-level (the Sun will do that from Sunos, or do it on
any old PC with a scsi controller and the manufacturer's low-level util.
Get the Solaris Netscape, and load up three libs from Solaris (ld.so,
libc.so.somethingorother [it will tell you which it is], and one other).
Also, move the Netscape nls and its sun libs into the lib tree,
appropriately.
Good luck.
Now back to FBSD.....

One of the coolest things about Unix is its I/O redirection.
Couple that with several specialized utilities, and now you're
talking power.
One way to solve your problem is by using the 'wc' utility.
It counts not only words, but bytes or lines, too. So
$ grep /pattern/ foo.bar | wc -l
says to have grep send the lines that match /pattern/ to the
standard input of wc, which counts the number of lines when given
the '-l' option. Probably there is an option to grep which
does this too, but I think it's much simpler to learn a few
basic commands and hook them together.
If you want the output directed to foo.out just
$ grep /pattern/ foo.bar | wc -l > foo.out
If you don't like the format of wc's output, you can use sed, awk,
or perl, or put the commands into a shell script, to strip/add spaces,
insert text, etc.. But don't stop there. Learn Tcl/Tk, or use
PerlWish or Perl/Tk, and add a graphical interface.
Flexibility. Power. That's what I'm talking about...

does replay want to continue talking to stdin? (if so, it'll exit

Hello all
I'm trying to install an MP3 player. I'm using Linux 2.0.35 that comes
with the Suse 5.3 distribution. I found X11amp, but when I try rpm -i I
get a list of half a dozen things that are missing (something like
dependency error).
I tried the .gz version, but ./configure complains that my gcc cannot
make executables (I already compiled a kernel, so what ???).
Installing new apps under Linux is really a pity. Why don't people make
like Netscape : click on ns-install and that's all ? Fighting around
with glibc, libc5 or libc6 or xyz.1.1-3.beta.0.7-tar.gz makes me fly
away from Linux.
(oh, I come back one week later and try again and again and finally it
takes weeks to get a sound out of the box, compared to the 5 minutes
under Windows ...) Sorry for that, but Linux extremely frustrating.
Thanks anyway if somebody could help me installing an mp3 player
