My fellow programmer work did a fresh reinstall of Win95B on his
machine (due to some major issues he had with the network), and the
skinny of it is:
* It took him three days of hard work to get his machine up and
runnning.
* During his install his 9GB SCSI drive died.
* I don't think he's still running at 100%
But most importantly, after he reformated the C drive, we both looked
at each other like idiots, as we couldn't figure out how to get
Windows to install from the CD. Funny thing is, even though the
machine can boot from the CD drive, Win95 is non bootable, and we
didn't have DOS drivers for the CD. We eventually used Lynx, a
modified parallel cable and a laptop to transfer the files.

Subject: libc5 binaries don't run on Linux 2.2?
Date: 31 May 1999 08:54:37 -0700
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I've been having problems running some precompiled binaries which use libc5
on my Debian GNU/Linux 2.2.8 libc6 (glibc2) system. WordPerfect 8 from
Corel and Digital Audio Processor from http://www.cee.hw.ac.uk/~richardk
both crash during the same part of libc initialization code:
Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault.
0x4024891f in __getopt_clean_environment ()
(gdb) bt
#0 0x4024891f in __getopt_clean_environment ()
#1 0x401f5fc4 in __libc_main ()
#2 0x401f6041 in _init ()
#3 0x40002205 in _dl_boot ()
My LD_LIBRARY_PATH and /etc/ld.so.conf both start with /lib which has
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 14 May 24 05:51 /lib/libc.so.5 -> libc.so.5.4.46
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 586720 Feb 8 18:32 /lib/libc.so.5.4.46
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 13 Apr 29 19:03 /lib/libc.so.6 -> libc-2.
Both DAP and WordPerfect specifically link with libc.so.5 so it should
be seeing the right library. 5.4.46-3 is the latest libc5 for Debian
(designed to run on libc6-based systems) from
http://www.debian.org/Packages/stable/oldlibs/libc5.html. According
to the Linux WordPerfect page at
http://www.wec.ufl.edu/staff/hydew/comp/os/lin_corel.html
there were problems with Linux 2.2 and libc5 binaries but these were resolved
by 5.4.46-2.
So I need to figure out what has to be upgraded or reconfigured to
run these binaries. I have the precompiled RealPlayer 5 which ALSO uses
libc5 and works great. Any help would be appreciated. My versions are:
Kernel modules 2.1.121 (don't use em)
Gnu C 2.7.2.3
Binutils 2.9.1
Linux C Library 2.0.7
Dynamic linker ldd: version 1.9.9
Linux C++ Library 2.8.0
Procps 1.2.9
Mount 2.7l
Net-tools 2.01
Kbd 0.94
Sh-utils 1.16
Thanks in advance for any advice/pointers.

I don't have it either, and when I clicked on the GET PLUGIN link (at
Netscape) on the www.spinner.com page, Netscape told me that a plugin for my
system doesn't exist -- which I knew already. However, Realplayer 5.0 works
fine for me (Slackware 3.4, kernel 2.0.30, NS 4.6) even so. It played the
sound at spinner.com, I just didn't want to join to listen to the 3 pieces of
music I might have wanted to hear...
You have to follow the instructions EXACTLY. And you may -- for some reason
that is entirely mysterious to me -- have to reboot linux for rvplayer to
work. You probably really only have to kill and restart some process, but as
a single user it's easier to hit the button than actually learn something...
Cheers,

Your new kernel is built without the IPX network protocol. Either load
it as a module, if available (modprobe ipx), or rebuild the kernel.

Do you mean SVGA-mode or X Quake2? ('Scuse my ignorance if there
is only one; I don't have it.) If it's SVGA mode, it's possible that your
libvga configuration is off. Take a look at /etc/vga/libvga.config and make

I took over this sgi machine which had been maintained by some one else.
GCC and cc compiler path was set , so I thought those two compilers has

the system was not able to compile perl.
I guess gcc lib and cc lib had not been installed.
My question is how do I know whether or not cc ompiler or gcc compiler
has been successfully installed and configured including its libraries.
Is there a certain path those two generates or certain files that would
tell me their installations are incomplete?
I would appreciate your support.

Yes you can use RPM in slackware, but you can't use any of its

Subject: Lilo+W98=No boot-why?
Date: Mon, 31 May 1999 19:04:38 -0600
At least part of this is probably an FAQ, but I couldn't find anything
real specific, so...
Why did installing lilo render my Windows98 non-bootable, and in fact,
rendered the drive unmountable from within Linux as well? No files
visible from DOS either. I can guess *what* happened; I'm wondering
*why*
I am running Red Hat Linux 6 on hdc
Windows98 resides on hda1. Only one FAT32 partition. It was a clean
install (not an upgrade) onto a new drive, done not so many months ago.
hda1 and hdc are identical 8.4G Maxtor DiamondMax drives
I installed Lilo on the MBR of hda1. It works great, just so long as you
don't select Windows98, in which case, you're bumped back to Lilo.
Now I've seen plenty of coverage on how to rebuild or restore an MBR,
but before I bother, can anyone explain why this problem happened in the
first place? Is Lilo just plain incompatible with FAT32 systems? This
boot menu business would be very handy--if it worked!
And if it turns out that Lilo simply doesn't work well on a W98 FAT32
MBR, would I fare better with Norton Commander? I already have a
workable Linux boot floppy, but was looking for something more elegant.
And finally, getting back to the matter of the MBR, what is the
preferred method of making it Windows-friendly again:
--use fdisk /mbr from DOS?
--use lilo to restore it (I made a couple of changes to lilo already, so
this is only an option for me if it stores the pre-lilo config, not just
the previous one)
--have MS ScanDisk or Norton Utilities (latest) rebuild it
Suggestions?

If I remember correctly, you have to use /dev/tape with KDAT. Just set a
symbolic link to /dev/st0.
I use BRU and/or Taper, so it's been a while since I looked at KDAT, but
I'm pretty sure setting the symlink to /dev/tape is what it wants.

You would need to use the "chown" - command to allow your user to read or

Without the functionality of /net, what has been done for autofs?

Hugh,
Auto fs works very well under both 2.0.36 and under 2.2.9. I have used
it in both kernels. I am able to load local filesystems, ie removable
drives and cdrom and well as nfs mounts. I am using autofs 3.1.3

You can use FIPS.EXE to split your existing Win 98 partition. However the
version of FIPS shipped with RH5.1 does not recognize FAT32 partitions.
You will need FIPS.EXE ver 2.0 or higher, which you can download from the

Subject: telnet & ftp clients 95 to unix
Date: Tue, 01 Jun 1999 14:56:03 +1200
Hi all,
Im currently working on a project to standardise our telnet and ftp
clients that various staff members are currently using to connect to
various unix platforms (amongst other things) from the 95 desktop.
Im looking for the standard things compatibility (with various systems),
ease of use, cost, features such as scroll history etc etc.
I was wondering if anyone has already completed such a project or has
reasons they prefer a specific client (or why they dont recommend a
certain client).
Any help apreciated.
cheers

Why is that? "Best" is not necessarily the same as "cheapest." (And the
cheapest is not necessarily the same as lowest up-front cost.)
If I can buy a package for a few thousand bucks that has similar
performance, out of the box, from a "free" package that requires more
knowledge and tuning, the "free" package may end up costing more money.
Time is money.
This is not to say I am defending NT. I doubt that NT is the best platform.
But I don't think that the upfront cost should be a major factor in
determining "best"...the entire cost should be considered. (My personal
opinion is that NT would have the highest cost even if it were free, but
that's beside the point.)
