Yes - each major distribution has it's own way of packaging things.
If you have done something odd to your libraries so the abundently
available binaries won't work the sources are also available. With
rpm based distributions you would grab an srpm and use rpm --rebuild.

I think they walked away from that claim when BSDI was being sued
by AT&T over that very issue. Since the lawsuit was settled out
of court I guess we have to take their word for it.

I had essentially this same stupid problem just today, one of dozens over
months of trying to get the IDE CD-RW burner to work again. I fixed this
with:

   cd /lib/modules/2.2.15
   depmod -a

(There was an old version of [modules.dep] which never was updated after
repeatedly recompiling the kernel -- I noticed this and killed it before
doing the above. Geez, it would have been nice for this stuff to be
documented much more clearly ...).

Hmmm, did you actually look to see if the above file exists. It doesn't
on the FTP server in question:

The file is also not on any other mirrors, nor the Official RH 6.2 CD.

However, stage2.img exists on my RH6.1 CD. Conclusion:

* You can't do FTP installs of RH6.2 using RH6.1 boot disks.

Solutions:

* Use RAWrite (or dd if you already use Linux) to make a RH6.2 boot disk

* Install RH6.1 via FTP instead

* Make a RH6.2 CD from an ISO image, and boot from the CD (can your
  computer boot from a CD)

* Buy a $2 RH6.2 CD from your choice of (LinuxCentral.com, LinuxMall.com,
  CheapBytes.com, or LSL.com)

* Buy a $30 official RH6.2 set from a local computer store. This also
  comes with a boot disk.

Subject: samba printer woes...now LPRng
Date: Thu, 11 May 2000 15:27:05 -0600

I have had nothing but problems trying to get my Mandrake 7.0
system to print to a windows shared printer via samba. I
have used printtool and linuxconf on separate occassions to
try to setup a windows networked printer but it NEVER works.

I got tired of the lack of error messages or anything else
to indicate what the hell was going on so I dumped lpr
and replaced it with LPRng instead. I dumped my setup
printers (lp and lp0) and started over with printtool.
I created my samba printer shares, both simple postscript
printers that I can connect to directly with smbclient -
but even then I still cannot get them to print anything.
I tried printing the ascii test page and I get an error:

Error printing testpage to lp

Error reason: Status information:
        sending job 'root@dummy227-139+451' to lp@localhost
        connecting to 'localhost', attempt 1
        connected to localhost
        requesting printer lp@localhost
        sending control file 'cfa451root@dummy227-139' to
        lp@localhost
error 'LINK_TRANSFER_FAIL' sending file to lp@localhost
        job 'root@dummy227-139+451' transfer to lp@localhost
        failed

Finally, an error message (thank you LPRng)!! lpr doesn't give
squat. In any case, I don't know what the problem is given this
error message. What is a "LINK_TRANSFER_FAIL"? How do I fix
this? I would hope that if I can figure out this particular problem
I might actually (FINALLY) get printing to work to the local
windows shared printers.

Anyone have any input that will help me with this situation given
the above message?

I think he ment something on the lines of "If FreeBSD can run Linux
binaries, then why not replace the Linux kernel with a FreeBSD kernel
and use emulation to run all Linux applications?", or maybe "Why not
make a GNU/FreeBSD system?!".

Are you running X in 256-color mode, 65536 color mode, or in true color
mode? You can set this up with this command:

        Xconfigurator

You will probably be better off if you run X in true color mode.

Probably not, since Microsoft thrives on creating their own formats that

That said, see if Staroffice or Word Perfect can grok those files.

Not really. You don't actually need any AT&T code to call yourself
Unix(tm). You do need to pay money to The Open Group and pass some
tests. See
http://www.unix-systems.org/questions_answers/can_i_use_the_trade_mark.html
for pretty much that, with no disclosure on the fees. :)

The Unix trademark and the Unix codebase went their seperate ways years
ago: the trademark went to X/Open which has since been absorbed by the
Open Group, and the code went to SCO via Novell (which also sold
'unlimited licenses' to Sun and others before selling off the remains).

So BSDI or FreeBSD or even Linux -could- be called Unix... if someone
thought it was worth the trouble for the branding, which is questionable
these days. Each group already has a valuable brand name.

See http://www.unix-systems.org/market_information/may29.html for an
interesting side note: Linux may at one point become Unix(tm).

This is not what you use Samba for. You use Samba for accessing a Windoze
share from a separate, currently running Windoze machine on your network.

What you want to use is mount, as in something like:

        mount /dev/hda1 /mnt

Where /dev/hda1 is the partition containing your Windows files.

>this problem.

Of course not. With raw telnet, you have to wait for the server to
respond to what you are typing. Over a low internet link or a dial-up
connection, you will feel the delay.

The way Windoze avoids this is simple: Your mud client only sends the
command after you type it, so there is no network delay in the actual
typing of this command.

>I need my MUD fix and can't get it with Linux.

You just need to know where you can get the kool mud fix.

May I suggest TinyFugue, aka tf.

You can find a binch of tf RPMs here:

        http://www.rpmfind.net/linux/RPM/TByName.html

Starting with:

http://www.rpmfind.net/linux/RPM/suse/6.3/i386/suse/fun1/tf-40s1-42.i386.html

Looks like SuSE already comes with this wonderful program. Try typing
this at the command prompt:

        tf

You probably will want some help using this client. Look up 'Tiny Fugue'
at www.google.com, or, more simply:

        man tf

I believe you open up a MUD simply with

        /open name.of.mud.server port

As in

        /open mud.example.com 6969
