hello
this description (and the heading) strike me as very misleading as the
software isn't available. and if the software isn't available, it doesn't
matter what language it's written in.

This is probably the killer line. Under 99% of the situations, you have
to at least escape the xon/xoff characters in the character set in use.
Set an option that tells pppd to use the 'asyncmap 0x000a0000' which
will escape those two characters in the data stream.

I see it did acknowledge it, so did mine, but then it hung up just like
yours is doing.
This is good info I think, so I'll leave it. But there should be a
window someplace to allow adding that option 'asyncmap 0x000a0000'
(without the quotes)

You need more memory. 32M is about the minimum just for KDE, but is
not enough when you start running large apps.

This modem will work fine. It is a true hardware based modem using the
RC56KDPF chipset. The only "winmodem" diamond makes is the SupraMax (stay
away from that piece of #$%#$^)
a good init for this modem is AT&F2 (set's autoreliable mode) to set v.34
just put +ms=11,1,300,33600 (or desired max speed)

Just seen this mail now, and it intrigued me ...
I would perhaps use cron, calling a simple script, every "x" minutes.
This script will scan all the update times of the files in
/var/spool/mail/ and anything which has been updated in the last "x"
minutes means that the user with the same name has new mail.
Working from memory ....
find /var/spool/mail -mmin -5 -exec "notifyuser {}" \;
will find all the users who received mail in last 5 minutes ... and call
a script "notifyuser" with the name of the mailbox with new mail.
This can be run as "nobody", I think... no chance of data security
issues.
just a thought .... ;-)

I need to run Solaris binaries on that box so I downloaded
ibcs-2.1-981105.tar.gz source package but no matter how I try I can

Has anyone successfully compiled ibcs under Linux on sparc architecture at

GNU Nana 2.4 has been released and is available from:
<ftp://ftp.cs.ntu.edu.au/pub/nana/nana-2.4.tar.gz>
Who might be interested?
GNU C/C++ programmers including those who build reliable or
real time systems. If you know what Design By Contract is
you might be interested.
What does it do?
Assertion checking, logging and various other strange
activities concerned with making programs work correctly.
See <http://www.cs.ntu.edu.au/homepages/pjm/nana-home>
for more details etc. [Note: this page refers to nana-2.3 but
is mostly correct, I hope to have a home page set up
shortly elsewhere at <http://www.quoll.com.au/~pjm/nana>].
What is new in this release?
A few more fixes and a new test system. Its been out for a
few weeks with about 5 downloads/day without any major
complaints so it may be stable.

Hi,
Since high volume backup solutions are expensive, and low volume ones
are proprietary and have bad cost/benefit, my strategy is simply using
CD-RW for backups up to around 5 GB (uncompressed).
If my needs exceed several CD's per backup run, I can upgrade to a 24MB
DDS-3 drive.
This is what I can work out for a reasonably cost/benefit balanced
backup strategy. I'm also interested in other opinions.
Regards.

I recently upgraded from Mandrake 5.3 to Mandrake 6.0. After the initial
install, every time when I reboot, it is unable to unmount my /, /root, and
/tmp partitions. Then, when it boots again, it does an fsck every time, and
it usually finds a deleted inode or two with a zero dtime. The partitions
pass the test every time, but it gets annoying waiting for 5 minutes to boot
the machine. Is anyone else suffering from the same problem? Can anybody
suggest a fix? Thanks.

Hi,
i try to have an Ensoniq audio pci sndcard to work on Linux RH 5.1
Kernel 2.2.4
i have compiled the kernel with the Ensoniq options marked to 'y' but at
the boot time, i have the message:
soundscape: Card not detected.
i checked the irq and i/o stuff under windows, and don't know if my
settings are good.
for example, i read midi-irq = 7 and audio-irq = 7. But i see irq = 9 in
/proc/pci
how do i select the good settings for kernel compilation ?
else, i saw es1370 in irq=9 that is supposed to be the soundcard
according to /proc/pci .... ?
Note: i have RH 5.1 < 5.2 so sndconfig doesn't work !
Thanks you for helping.

Recompile your kernel to enable the frame buffer device. This will
allow you to boot to a graphical text mode. I don't really know the
details as far as the different modes available but I beleive there is a

It there any "real" advantage to recompiling the kernel (or any of the

If so, what portions of the GNU/Linux software suite would benefit most?
