New System with ABIT KT7 RAID BOARD and AMD THUNDERBIRD 800MHZ CPU
I am thinking about building a new system using a ABIT KT7 RAID BOARD
and a AMD THUNDERBIRD 800MHZ CPU to run redhat 7.0.
I would like to here comments on the above hardware

Hi,
That usually works but in this case the netsape parent will not die and
I have thrown every kill signal I can think of.
I have never attempted to kill pid 1 but something tells me that is not
a good idea.
I can start up a new netscape and I will get a new parent and a new
<defunct> but the dead netscape still retains its resources thus making
it a problem.

No, you do not need X for lynx. Please post the error you get when you
try lynx.

No, you can launch any command in the background by ending the command
line with &. See "man bash", section on JOB CONTROL.

No, you won't need X to run apache.

You do not need X to run lynx. What error do you get when you try to run
lynx? What happens?
> What can I run while the pppd is running on wvdial in order to verify

You can run any application you like (as long as it's not a graphical
app, since yuo don't have X) - to check if you're online, a quick "ping"
would certainly suffice.
> I assume I need to switch to another virtual window in
> order to run another app while wvdial is running?
I haven't done dialup in a long, *long* time, so I mightbe wrong here,
but I think you can certainly have the pppd running in the background so
that there's no need to switch to another virtual console.
Did you provide all the necessary information (like DNS-server, IP and
the like)? Go and read the ISP-Hookeup-HOWTO
(http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/ISP-Hookup-HOWTO.html)

No, X is not needed to run apache. However, X ist not that complicated to
set up and provides a lot of conveniences, so I'd suggest you install it,
unless you are low on disk-space and/or memory.

Hi.
My ip masquerading works fine on a redhat 6.2 (kernel 2.2.14) but my
streaming performances (with quicktime or others of that kind) still a big
problem(goin' like a 56k but i have adsl), Quicktime(on win2k) can't locate
any available udp ports so it send it out by http, i've tried some ipmasqadm
redirection but it didn't works, I think that the ip_masq_udp_dloose could
maybe resolve my problem but i can't find this module..
Anyone have an idea about this ?

I also found source in basic for CPM and C-64. Visual Basic for DOS,
There are at least a dozen 'commercial' comm packages that support ZMODEM
As I recall from the days of 300/1200 baud modems, it's not really very
difficult to implement.

You might want to consider Kermit protocol instead, since it was designed
to run over X.25 connections. Depending on exactly what kind of X.25
connection you are talking about (e.g. through X.3 PAD?) it is very likely
not transparent enough to accommodate Zmodem.

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hello:
There may be a much easier way of determining this. We have several
servers that we monitor memory utilization and on one machine
specifically memory utilization just seems to drop steadily although the
load remains much the same as does the processing. I'd like to find a
way to analyze the memory utilization per program and find out if I have
a misbehaving program. I'd like suggestions on how to best do this.
We do have sar capturing data on this machine so I was wondering if I
could use this to look at specific programs utilization. I've just
started using sar and have found it nice for looking at historical
utilization. Will a simple ps tell me what I need to know. Hints from
anyone who's done this in the past? We recently started using
syslog-ng for logging and I want to make sure I'm not consuming too much
memory for this single program.
TIA.

Good thought, but I have tried it in different cubicles, etc. It's the
office itself. I do need the 100Hz I enjoy in Windows.

kvideogen is a program that generates text (ModeLines) for inserting into
your XF86Config. I did this in an attempt to increase the refresh rate for
my monitor under xwindows.
However, nothing was different. Does this have anthing to do with the
XF86Config-4 file that is also in /etc/X11? I have Mandrake 7.2. Perhaps
the XF86Config is not actually being used in thei dist? Can anyone shed
some light on this issue?

Yes, Robert, this is exactly what I need. But where did you get your
ncftp version with curses support from? The one that came with RH 6.1
distribution neither has a single word about curses nor -L option.
ncftp man page at http://www.ncftp.com/ncftp/doc/ncftp.html states that
'Upon running the program you are presented a command prompt where you
type commands to the program's shell'.
Actually, I found a couple of visual ftp clients: cftp
(ftp://rpmfind.net/linux/freshmeat/cftp/cftp-0.9.3-1.i386.rpm) and sftp
(http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Peaks/5799/sftp.README.html), do
not confuse with another sftp - ftp over rsh/ssh tunnel.
The first one is vi-like and not that easy for our users and I have
problems building the second one.
So I'm still looking.
Alex.

Subject: Re: Linux freeze

For security, yes.
And I think there was something about netscape and java engines etc.
Quick notes on X :
ctrl-alt backspace :
Kill the X server, and produce a core dump. You should go look in some
directories for a "core" file -that's the name - and delete it.
ctrl+alt+ Keypad plus - cycle up the screen resolution
ctrl+alt+ Keypad minus - cycle down the screen resolution
When the system comes up to run level 5 ( that's when X runs ),you have at
least consoles 1 to 4 ( F1 to F4 ) in text mode, where you can log in as
root, for example and do some root- like work ( mount a new hdd, and format
it , alter your firewall rules, etc.. )
>From X, you get to these consoles by using ctrl-alt+<Function key>
You will be greeted with a "Login:" prompt. Don't let the text mode fool
you. What ever can be done ( as far as system administration goes ) from the
GUI, it can all be done from here, and more .
Ok, regarding X :
the configuration file for X is /etc/X11/XF86Config . It is a text file
chock full of explanations. Have a read through it.
To see howmuch memory is in use, launch a terminal window ( when inside X )
and type "top" , or ust use "ktop" the latter is a gui version of the same
tool. This is like windows NT's Task Manager . you can watch memory and cpu
usage from here.
I don't know about limiting the memory for an application but I am sure
there is someone else who is more knowledgable in this than I .

I can't get dosemu 99.13 mouse to work. Please help.
I'm using a logitech 3 button ps2 mouse. dosemu.conf is set for mouse =
"ps2" and mouse_device = /dev/mouse which in turn points to /dev/psaux.
When I run dos EDIT.EXE the mouse does not appear. I've tried killing
gpm and using other mouse descriptions. The only thing that shows any
sign of life is to use a "microsoft" driver, but that is totally
confused... no cursor, just highlights the command menus randomly with
movement.
Suggestions?

Under RedHat 6.X and earlier there is no exportfs. It does appear
to exist under RedHat 7.0.

Hi,
I have some problems with writing CD-R under Linux (RedHat 7.0) using
'cdrecord' & Creative CDRW drive.
I made iso : 'mkisofs' - everything OK.
I mounted it - looks OK.
I tested (-dummy) : 'cdrecord' - everything OK.
I wrote (speed=4) : 'cdrecord' - everything seems to be OK.
But I can't mount this disk.
$ mount /dev/cdrom
.... wrong fs type, bad option, ... - standard error message.
I have no idea what's wrong.
Is it my fault? or cdrecord don't support RW8435E? (I did not found it
in compability list, but Creative CDRW8432 is in FAQ [5-1-26(or 27)])

Jacek
