Just make 2 as follows.
To make an Emergency Boot Disk floppy.
Login as root, and insert a new floppy.
fdformat /dev/fd0H1440
mkbootdisk --device /dev/fd0 2.2.xx
where xx is kernel version.
To make an Rescue disk:
fdformat /dev/fd0H1440
Copy vmlinuz to the floppy disk:
cd /boot
cp vmlinuz /dev/fd0
Find the kernel's root device:
rdev
# will show /dev/hdaXX where XX is partition number
Set kernel's root device:
rdev /dev/fd0 /dev/hdaXX
# where XX is the partition number
Mark the root device as read-only:
rdev -R /dev/fd0 1

I've looked in Que's "Using StarOffice" and can't find anything on this
under StarImpress, but in StarImage it's in the Modify menu.
There are 22 newsgroups in the staroffice.* hierarchy, including
staroffice.com.support.starimpress - you could try asking there.

a lot of programming. I am a volunteer so will have limited time.

Yes, it has. See the ApplixWare web site; they indicate that 5.0
has a "GTK Interface" and supports "GTK Themes."

There are KDE debs. available, they just arn't included. Just add "deb
http://kde.tdyc.com slink kde" to your /etc/apt/sources.list file and you
can install kde debs just like you would the official debian packages.

On Debian that would be:
"dpkg --get-selections > packages.dpkg" on master machine
"dpkg --set-selections < packages.dpkg" on new machine

How graceful is it about hardware differences? And is there
a way to do a subsequent update (including adding/removing as
well as updating packages) on the master so the copies can
track along? What if source changes are done and things
recompiled? Can the package be rebuilt and loaded from
an alternate location on the copies?

(Wow, I'm slightly impressed you did all that junk manually when there are
so many nice frontends like kppp and GNOME ppp that do most of it
automatically.)
Edit the file /etc/resolv.conf and make sure the file looks like this:
search
nameserver xxx.yyy.zzz.www (IP address of your ISP's nameserver)
nameserver xxx.yyy.zzz.www (IP address of your ISP's 2nd nameserver)
Your ISP should provide you with that info if you don't know it already.
More recent versions of pppd than the one that shipped with RH 6.0 have an
option to use peer DNS, which will automagically add the right nameserver
entries when you connect. This should work, hope that helps, good luck.

What does "uname -r" say? What does /usr/include/linux/version.h say for
UTS_RELEASE? The script is complaining that these disagree.

I have dosemu running fine, but when I load a DOS program like WordStar 7.0,
I have no cursor in the program. There is a flashing underline off to the side.
The same is true for another DOS wordprocessor, VDE.
How do I get proper cursor action in DOS programs running under dosemu.
Both these programs work fine with regular DOS.
And - I am also a linux newbie - keep it simple, please!

I have the opportunity of picking up a mini-tower Pentium 133 machine
(Intel VX motherboard) with a 250W PS, 3 gig IDE HD, 4 Meg Matrox
video card, generic sound card, 64 megs 60ns RAM, 56k Winmodem, which
will be 86'd in favor of an external real 56K modem; 12x CD-ROM
(bootable), and a 1.44 floppy. It has Windows98 currently installed,
which will be wiped completely before installing Linux.
I intend to use it as a single user setup, initially, but not as my
main machine; and later to use it to more fully learn Linux and the
ins-and-outs of Network Administration. Is it good enough for my
intentions, and fast enough for running X and graphic interface apps,
but no games; well, chess, maybe? The Linux hardware sight seems to
indicate that all the parts are supported, as near as I can tell.
Also, any suggestions on the best Linux distribution for the neophyte?
That is, no brains required installation, works well enough the first
time, tweeking and fiddling can wait until later. I am considering
Debian, but the Stormix distro seems better, install and setup-wise.
And Corel seems to be setup more as an alternative for the Windows9x
user looking for something better. It's also based on the Debian
distro, isn't it?
I've heard good things about Caldera, too. Red Hat, Slackware, and
Mandrake, I've been advised, are more for experts.
Any feedback will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Subject: GODDAMN PRINTER!!!
Date: Fri, 19 May 2000 23:03:41 -0600
This is not a linux question so much as a generic hardware
question. I have an epson stylus color 600. I erroneously
sent a bad printjob to the printer and now can't get the
damn printer to quite trying to print it.
I sent a jpeg directly to the printer instead of via some
graphics app like ee or kshow. Now, whenever I turn on the
printer, it spits out page after page of crap. It prints
a line or two of ascii garbage at the top of the page and
then spits it out and goes on doing the same thing with
page after page. I have sat here running the same
bundle of paper thru the printer again and again hoping that
it would finally dump it's buffer but nooooooo.
Shortly after sending the printjob I took a quick look at
the queue with lpq but nothing showed...it was too late.
Since then I have tried shutting off the printer for a few
minutes - doesn't work. As soon as I turn it on again it
starts spewing crap again. I have tried rebooting the computer
but it doesn't stop it either. I have tried shutting down the
computer completely and then turning off the power supply as
well for a few minutes but as soon as I restart the computer
the printing starts up again.
Is there ANY way to flush the print buffer clean so that this
nonsense stops cold? I don't want to babysit the printer,
running the same couple of sheets of paper thru it again and
again...and I am unwilling to waste a lot of paper by just
sticking in blank paper and letting it go. I WANT THE DAMN
INFERNAL DEVICE TO STOP...NOW!
Is there ANY way to stop the madness?

It is the RPM BS that has caused me to abandon that format whenever

Packages that conform to the ./configure, make, make install mantra
are easy to build and put where you want them. You don't have to
worry about dependencies because ./configure should discover if
required libraries can not be found.
Granted, this is not the way most users want to operate. But until
all the distros adhere to the FHS strongly enough and stop adding
their own hacks (patches) to the code, this is the most reliable way
to go.
I've even updated GCC and libc this way. That took a while on my
hardware.
