I am using a 2929 and I don't have ANY problems with it. Oh...I had to
disable PnP-OS in my BIOS. It dials out fine and even connects ok. Did you
check if the dialin number is correct? "set carrier-watch off" for the
modem and try. And I have the PnP jumper enabled in my modem and
configured isapnp in linux to use the pnp mode in the modem. (Even though
BIOS is set to a non-PnP OS).

By setting BIOS to a PNP-OS, I lose an available com port for some reason
and the remaining one does not even work.

I have a USR internal ISA 56K modem (model 5607-2) that I would
like to use with Linux. This is NOT a Winmodem. However, it
is Plug-and-Pray.

There are no jumpers on this modem, but there are solder pads where the
jumpers would be. The circuit board is silkscreened with docs of what
the jumpers would do if present. Does anyone know if this modem can be
manually configured by soldering wire jumpers across the pads?

It seems like this should work, but I don't know if any internal changes
were made to go along with not having the jumper pins in place. Would
like to hear if someone knows for sure before I take a soldering iron
to it...

I started on Slackware. I still like Slackware, but I couldn't in
good faith recommend it to someone who's trying to maintain more than
one system. Slackware can be a royal pain in the ass to keep up to
date sometimes - especially on multiple servers.

Plus, slackware is ... ah, "slack" supporting non-x86 architectures.

I've had RH5.1 running on my box for several months now, and I have
a few persistent bugs that I can't figure out.

1. Sometimes the modem hangs. I lose my connection but the modem will
not get
off the line (I can hear it through the phone). I tried to use xminicom
(as root
too) to try and reset the modem but it just ignores me. I have to reboot
the machine to get the modem back. Is there a way I can issue a reset to
the card,
or is there something else I may have screwed up to cause this?

2. I have a Logitech Mouseman+ with 4 buttons, no wheel. At one point I
was able to
use the middle mouse button, but when I upgraded to XFree86 3.3.3.1 (or
whatever) I lost that
capability. To do middle mouse operations I have to use the button under
my thumb
which doesn't work very well for me.

3. Email and Netscape 4.5. I have Netscape 4.5 installed and everything
seems to work
except for 1 thing, I can't have more than 1 addressee for a mail
message. If I send
to two or more people it responds with "message sent, waiting for reply"
and it never
does send it out. I have 4.51 running under WIN98 on the same box, going
to the
same server and it works fine. I'm pretty sure the nevironments are the
same.
I can send to one person with no problem.
Is there some sort of resource variable I need to change or setup? What
could cause this?

Thanks for any and all help.

Okay, here is the problem...

I finally got emacs (20.3.1) to recognize & start the timidity emacs
interface.

The problem is that when it is started, it gets as far as the fancy
bit where the timidity logo comes in from both sides, then emacs crashes
completely.

I've tried 'debug on crash', however, I can't figure out how to find &
read any information gathered.

Any advice appreciated...

WIN modems only work with WINdows !!!

"WIN" modem -> "WIN"dows ...

Quite simple really. No, Win modems can't work with Linux.

The best way to do printer accounting, particularly with laserjets, is
to use LPRng and its example laserjet setup, which includes accouting.

Failing that, one or two of the PCL drivers in Ghostscript include
hard page counting support and example filters with accounting
support. (The "hpdj" PCL 3 driver? One of the lj drivers? I forget
which includes this).

With plain lpd, the af attribute sets a value to be passed as an
argument to the if= filter. The input filter, then, is responsible
for counting pages and writing something usefult to the accounting
file.

Hello,

It would be nice if it were possible to open a netscape window

to a different display.

We are two users sharing a Linux account. We would like to log into two

different machines (home is mounted on both) and browse the internet

at the same time. To do this, we must launch two copies of netscape

at the same time. As most of you know, accessing files stored under the

~/.netscape directory from two different running browsers can cause problems

unless the second one is opened through the "File" toolbar, but then

you cannot launch the browser to a different monitor(display).

Thanks,

Neil

A question, but if the answer is "no", then it could be an argument
for Mandrake...

Does Mandrake give each user their own group, like Redhat does?

There was a posting to this group some months ago by someone who did just
that. As I recall, in addition to adding the posts, he had to add a
capacitor between two points on the board (although my memory is not clear
on this point). Perhaps that poster will read this and re-post the info.
I'm sure it would be of interest to many who purchased the PnP-only
version of that USR modem.
