I get the same thing with all DOS programs running in an X window,
but switching to a VT (Alt-Ctrl-F1) and running them there works

Is there any way to get rid of the hostname in the login prompt without
editing and recompiling the kernel?
OS is Debian Linux kernel 2.0.34. As mentioned in some documentation,
the (a)getty ignores a /etc/gettydefs file. Also none of the unix books
lying around here give any other advice.
Any idea?

I know that must sound like a dumb question, but I don't know how to
compile the source code that you can get from downloading. For example, I
download a program and unzip it, then I have a lot of source code but no
actual program. Any help?? Thanks a bunch.

Subject: module dependencies
Date: Sun, 21 May 2000 00:53:26 +0800
I'm having troubles with module dependencies once I recompile my new kernel
and modules. I'm running RedHat 6.2 (kernel 2.2.14-5.0).Once I boot into my
new kernel (2.2.14-5.0new) and it reaches the module dependency check, it
says that it can't open "/lib/modules/2.2.14-5.0new /modules.dep" for
writing. I've tried doing "depmod -a 2.2.14-5.0new", which creates a
modules.dep in /lib/modules/2.2.14-5.0new but that doesn't seem to work as
it displays the same message error message once rebooted. I've tried other
things but I seem to get nowhere. Yes, I have read ALL the texts, HOWTOS
regarding modules but the information seems to be outdated and very
inadequate. Any suggestions would be helpful.

I think Netscape has inherrant problems dealing with its own cache under
Linux. I use a cacheing proxy (Squid) to handle all my network cacheing,
and have the Netscape disk cache set to 0. The only cache I use in Netscape
is the memory cache, which I have set to about 4M.

Hmmmmmm, I think I may have unpacked the source again due to
some other problems so I guess the thing to try would be to rebuild
the kernel again and see if it quits complaining.
Thanks for the feedback.

For DC315 support you have run a kernel with the patches from
http://www.garloff.de/kurt/linux/dc395/ . Some distributions ( i.e SuSE)
may have allready applied this patch to the kernel coming with the
distribution .
The AVA-2904 uses AFAIK a variant of the AIC7xxx SCSI chips and should
run with the aic7xxx driver.

I'm soon to get a 6G HDD to replace my 4G HDD, and thus the 4G will replace
my 2G.
My questions are thus;
My 4G has 3 partitions. A 24M /boot, a 500M /home, and a 3.7G / partition.
What will dd do with my partitions? Will I end up with 2G of unused space
at the end of the drive? Would it work if I were to create my partitions
on the 6G HDD and dd the partitions over?
Secondly, the 2G. It's got a 500M FAT partition on it (first primary). Will
this be moved over if I use dd to transfer the 2G's contents to the 4G?
Thanks in advance.

Of course it is hardware accelerated. The entire idea of OpenGL is
wrapping hardware acceleration. Everything in the OpenGL API is
centred around making effective hardware accelerated implementations
possible.

Have you used GTK-- or even only read the description? Of course it
wraps GTK+ in its core. But it's got everything you can expect from a
C++ class library: namespaces, inheritance, easy construction of new
widgets, stuff like that, and a real neat wrapper around GTK+ signals
that's supposed to be conceptually clean without requiring a kluge
such as MOC.

Jeff,
First, lay out the source code in a sensible place. Commonly, you can
put it under a subdirectory in /usr/local. You can pick other places,
too, as long as you don't mix it with other stuff. Alot of packages
assume /usr/local as the default. Some assume /opt.
Once that's done, check the top directoy that you unzipped and tar'ed to
(I assume after unzipping you had a single 'tar' format file that you do
a 'tar xvf' upon to get your directory of source stuff). At the top
directory of the source directory, there should be either a README or
INSTALL text file. You want to read those. If they don't exist, then you
lost them somehow, or the people who packaged the source didn't do a
good job.

I am am using SuSE 6.0 (Kernel 2.2.36). Since I am russian, I want to
have russian characters in text mode. I ran yast and selected a font. It
was configured as default, and everything was fine. However, after
working for three or four minutes, the font suddenly became corrupt. All
the text with any color except white is completely unreadable. For an
example, all the symbolic links and directories shown by ls cannot be
read. If I run yast and chose the same font is starts working fine, but
soon it becames corrupt again. I tried several fonts and always got the
same results. What the heck is happening and how can I fix it?
Also, where can I download the newest SuSE kernel sources? Now I don't
have time to search the net.

Subject: Linux as a firewall/blocking proxy?
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Date: Sat, 20 May 2000 17:58:48 GMT
I currently co-administer a school network, and we're having problems with
people using the web for non-school related things, not to mention many
questionable and/or outright illegal activities.
We have a cacheing proxy setup right now that blocks access to certain sites,
but people have already figured out how to get around the proxy to access the
web freely.
We've been toying with the idea of setting up a Linux box that would sit
between our router and our network and block access to certain sites, but
only for IPs in the range of 172.23.42.110 - 172.23.43.254. Everything
below that is administrative, and we'll need unrestricted access.
In the process of doing this, we'd also like to configure it to act as a
firewall and block virtually all incoming connections, and close off any
of the more questionable outgoing ports (Napster and ICQ are two that come
immediately to mind); also only for the above specified range.
Could somebody send me a whole waft of reference URL's, HOWTO's, etc? We're
dealing with school/school board administration here who know nothing about
these magical boxes, and would wonder what's wrong with the NT box we
currently use as a proxy.
Thanks in advance, all!

Try it and see. On hardware that it can auto-detect (most PCI

I just got an above mentioned modem, and tried to get it to work. In
Windows, it connects at a maximum of 31,200, which is abnormal, since I used
a winmodem before and I mostly got 56k. I know it is not the isps fault.
Also, in Linux, it doesn't work at all! It can dial, but when it tries to

configuration I need to fix my problem. Does anyone know what is wrong?
