Hey one quick addon I just thought about. If you are having trouble logging
on there is a check box in the set up account for ip and dns I think make
sure they are unchecked I think (right click on it for quick tips.) and if
you did anything with minicom or pppd or anyother dial up for linux (mine
has atleast one other than kppp) bring up the task monitor and kill those
processes. Mini com will keep mine from entering. Also the other steps I
gave you are all I needed to get kppp up and running. put in your - account
name(the one that dial up network in windows would need) - password - phone
number. Double check the info. get those dns addresses. If you did any
fancy script editing you might need to remove it. Or just reinstall. Hope
this helps

Lee. The kernel version reported by uname is correct. This information is
gleaned from your /proc (a virtual directory generated to report the status
of your kernel as it functions) directory so it means you really are running
release 19 of the 2.2.9 kernel. To fix this, you must either install your
new kernel to the floppy you're booting from or boot from the harddisk where
you've compiled your kernel. (It does matter if you're booting from a
floppy because in that case the kernel being used is on the floppy.)

I don't know about Debian but with Mandrake 6.0 there's an
update to the initscripts that resolves the system's
inability to cleanly dismount a partition. YMMV. Check it
out at http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/fupdates.php3

How can I make my SyQuest SparQ 1GB parallel drive work under RH 6.0?

I re-compiled the kernel 2.2.5 to choose 'shuttle protocol', and Linux
detects the drive in the boot, but how can I mount? Which file system
should I use?

The best way to get Linux (Red Hat, Mandrake, Caldera,
Slackware, etc) is to buy it. If you visit InfoMagic or
Walnut Creek CD you can get several distributions in one
package (with Infomagic, at least).

Red Hat really started making a Linux install easier but
I've found that Mandrake 6.0 includes many more packages
that are pretty handy.

Bottom line - get a cheap Linux CDROM. If you have a CDR
drive then you can get an ISO9660 image of Mandrake or Red
Hat from ftp://ftp.linuxberg.com.

The CPUs aren't a problem. I've ordered a pair of 466Mhz ones, and I
think that should be fast enough :-) They come with heatsink/fan
combinations as well :-)

Thanks for the info though, I'm looking forward to building the machine

Perhaps something like this would do the trick:

        for i in "$1"/* #where $1 is the directoryname
        do
                if [ -f $1]; then
                        DO YOUR STUFF :-)
                fi
        done

As you can see from my other posting in this NG (shouldn't be that=20
hard to find :-), I'm currently having problems tantamount to yours=20

Lets modify that slightly and let poor ol' Mr. Root forget where he was

I wish they'd follow the xvscan style. you pay for their work (that's
fine by me) but you also get their sources should you need to support
or extend things yourself. at least, last time I looked, this hp
scanner software DID come with sources.

but its NOT oss's choice, to be fair. if they want to provide drivers
for card XYZ AT ALL, the nda forces them not to release source. they
are the pawns, don't blame them directly; blame the soundcard
companies for REQUIRING an nda.

you could argue that if no one signed nda's - out of prinicple - then
the concept of nda would go away. I don't buy that. the companies
are well set in their ways and NDA is how they think. if OSS refused
(on principle) to sign nda's, they would not be able to offer as many
drivers as they do. otoh, I know at least 1 card (the za2) that does
not require an nda, since the author/designer of the za2 used to make
HIS source available to folks who wanted it. but that's a rare
exception and he's a small shop; nothing at all like yamaha, etc, etc.

BeOS NGs start under comp.sys.be.*

Maybe comp.sys.be.advocacy or comp.sys.be.misc would be good places to
start. There are also groups for programmers and announcements along with
other things. I think the Be employees can occasionally be found posting
as well.

Other good places to start for info on BeOS are the Be website,
http://www.be.com/, BeNews http://www.benews.com/ and BeOSCentral
http://www.beoscentral.com/

Once you've got BeOS installed you'll be wanting your software, try

I was told that linux drivers WOULD be coming, which is why I chose
THIS soundcard company over another close competitor. true, there are
SOME drivers for linux for this card, but it still falls WAY SHORT of
the total abilities of this fine piece of hardware. and for pro
audio, there is nothing that is GPL'd. nothing. ziltch. that's just
life.

I tried talking with the manuf. and driver writers and go nowhere
fast. the manuf would still not release specs and would not choose
another person to write the drivers. so I'm stuck with a card that
has minimal linux support and while it supposedly works under 'doze,
that isn't why I bought the card in the first place. if I wanted
lockups and crashes, I didn't need an expensive card for that - 'doze
alone can manage that with standard off the shelf hardware ;-)

someday before I grow too old, maybe this company will retire this
hardware design and THEN they won't be afraid of releasing specs. the
card will still be useful but just not the latest tech, so the fear of
publishing the api won't be so 'scary' to them..

If someone has physical access to your machine, you're insecure wrt them
anyway, btw.

It's not a contradiction at all: it's assuming that people want to *use*
their computers rather than spending all their time upgrading. Some
things need to be done as root. Most things don't. When you don't need to
be root, be a user. Where's the contradiction?

Caml has something like that. An infix operator in Caml is just an identfier
which starts with one of:

=<>@^|&+-*/$%

, followed by zero of more occurences of the following characters:

!$%&*+-./:<=>?@^|~

So you can define and redefine your own infix operators at will.
Normal scoping rules apply.

Stephan
