After trying to get Samba set up in COL2.2 I finally was able to see the
Icon in the win95 Network Neighborhood. So I thought I was home
free...right?? WRONG..anyway, I can see the computer in the Network
Neighborhood (win95 of course) and log into it. From there it gives me a
"Public" directory and a directory with my username. When I try to open
any of those directories I need to enter another password. Here is where I
run into a problem. I get a "The Password is incorrect. Please try again"
message. I try and enter every password that I know of under the sun..and
nothing works. Is there a "*.conf" that I need to modify on the Linux
machine for passwords?? I have no idea what is going wrong. Please help
me with any ideas.

Let's see -
Four posts, all excessively long, all asking the same question, the
answer to which could be found if the poster would bother to read the
documentation provided with his operating system and topped off by
posting in HTML. Hmmm - Does "get a clue" apply here?

But, if you're in Linux, what in the world would compel you to go back?
Anyway, what's wrong with lilo?

putting noprobe in lilo.conf shouldn't be risky, but if you're worried, just
add the parameter on boot up...

I had been through that information many times. The root cause in my
case was a geometry spec issue, but nowhere (other than the lilo
source package) did I find any info on how to find the *right* geometry
info.
Get the lilo source
(I got mine from:
ftp://ftp.caldera.com/pub/OpenLinux/1.3/Packages/SRPMS/lilo-0.20-1.src.r
pm
but it's available in lots of places...)
read the README file contained there, and build the dparam.com program
(do a 'make' of the lilo source to create it) That did the trick for
me.
The confusing part was that the geometry info from /sbin/fdisk was
incorrect for use in my lilo.conf file. I still don't know why that
is...

Make sure you have your /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xinit/xinitrc or ~/.xinitrc
available, if it's there, then run "strace -s 256 xinit 2>&1|tee out",
then browse "out" to see what it says it can't find.

Yes. But he's not using a vt100 terminal. He's using a termcap for
vt100, presumably using something that emulates a vt100. The control
sequences used by 'resize' are designed to work with a real vt100 (and
incidentally most emulators of vt100).

While connected, get a shell and type
nslookup www.yahoo.com. 204.71.200.33
If it doesn't spit out a list of IP numbers, you have a connectivity problem.
Next go
nslookup www.yahoo.com.
If you don't get the same list, your DNS is misconfigured.

Forget that. Look at /etc/resolv.conf. There should be a line such as
nameserver 208.195.208.11
for each of the nameservers your ISP wants you to use.
You'll get a performance improvement if you put
nameserver 127.0.0.1
at the top and your local nameserver (named) is working, but use
your ISP's to get going first.

One thing to be really careful of ... !!!!!
Your hard disk settings are stored in the BIOS. It is very worth while
to write down the current setting of the Cylinder/Head/Block and whether
it is NORMAL/LBA/LARGE.
If you do not get this right, you may find that you "loose" your
partitions on your hard disks (You don't actually loose them, it just
looks like you loose them).
When you first boot on the new MBoard, make sure that the disk(s) appear
as they did before the upgrade. Altough not a disaster, it will make
life difficult if they are different.
You will (probably) need a rescue disk to boot up linux when you do have
the new MBoard in, and you will probably need to re-run LILO. Make sure
that your hard disk(s) have the same locations as before, whether SCSI
or IDE.

You might want to check out PLIP. It allows you to network 2

Substitute appropriate filename and mount point. You'll probably need to
be root to do this, and you'll definitely need loopback support on your
system, either compiled directly into the kernel or available as a module.

Although I agree with your general sentiment; I use Linux because I
believe it to be better. I am not on a religous crusade, I just want to
be able to do what I want with my computer. The thing I miss though, is
the choice of software.
That said I am an avocate of Linux and would not cry at M$'s funeral.
If companies are to start producing Linux software they must see a
profit. Then when there is more software available more people will
make the transition to Linux and therefore more companies will see a
market ... This will not stop people from producing good free software,
it will just add more choice.
As long as the actual OS remains open source it will be a healthy market
from which we shall all benefit. The M$ problem was caused by the
company with control of the OS shutting out competition. Linux
encourages competition, just listen to all the Debian/RH/SuSE etc.
debates.

Subject: 'ls' command: how to show all files in all directories?
Date: Thu, 10 Jun 1999 17:54:02 GMT
Greetings,
Have a rather large www directory, with god-knows-what subdirectories
and files from years of additions. Inventory time.
How would you port all listings to a file, ie 'ls > allfiles.txt' in
one easy step?!?! I have to keep doing this:
ls * > allfiles1.txt
ls */* > allfiles2.txt
ls */*/* > allfiles3.txt
etc. until complete; then print all those resultant 'allfilesX.txt' I
would like to just get the whole directory/subdirectory/* etc. put into
one file.
What do you recommend?
Thanks.

I don't know if Caldera has this, but try the command "linuxconf". This will
bring up the Linux Configurator. If you are in X, open a term window and
type in the command. You can change network as well as a host of Linux
settings with this program.
Cheers,
Robert

Well, the current (sixth) edition of Lamb & Robbins, _Learning the vi
editor_, uses the vi that ships with Solaris 2.6 as the "reference"
unix vi. On Linux, probably the closest (i.e., least extended) clone
is nvi, which is also the version shipped with the free Berkeley
unixes.

KDE does this by default.

Subject: & sign in filename on Joliet CD
Date: Thu, 10 Jun 1999 22:17:04 +0200
Hi,
I've done rather a stupid thing.. I've written a CD under Win95 with
Joliet extensions, and placed an & sign in one of the file names. The
CD mounts under linux, but I'm having all sorts of troubles with it.
None of my other Joliet CDs do this (and they don't have & signs in -
hence I'm assuming it's this).
I have found the iocharset=name option reffered to in the kernel
documentation, and assume that I can somehow tell Linux to swap the &
for (say) an _. Does anyone perhaps know any more about how to use
iocharset=name? I can't find anyother references to it in manuals,
DocProj etc.
Thanks to anyone who can help...
Paul
