I have an Acer-6206A CD-RW drive on my Linux machine running SuSE-6.2
distro with cdrdao-1.1.2 and cdparanoia-III-alpha9.6.
For some obscured reason, the cdrdao only works with --driver
generic-mmc-raw mode. The questions I have are:
1. If I retrieve some audio files from some CDs using cdparanoia, should
I do it with "cdparanoia -p" since the cdrdao can only use a
generic-mmc-raw mode on my Acer drive.
2. In writing to a CD-R media, do I need to specify a pre-gap?

The XF86_SVGA at http://glide.xxedgexx.com/3DfxRPMS_vb_glibc.html is for
the XFree86 system. It replaces the SVGA server in XFree86.
Did you download the new 3.3.4 version of XFree86 ? Maybe it already
has the Voodoo3 stuff in it's SVGA ? The 3.3.2 and 3.3.3 versions that
shipped with RedHat 6.0 do NOT.
3.3.4 is the first rel to include support for the S3Trio3D. Maybe
Voodoo3 is in there too.
Sounds like the color depth setting is what you need though.

True, but if you give a REASON for your likes or dislikes, that's another
matter. For instance:
"I like Linux World because it's got a cute penguin on the cover." --
This opinion is easily dismissed, except perhaps by penguiphiliacs. ;-)
"I like Linux World because the writing is unusually concise and it's got
lots of articles useful to newbies." -- This opinion provides information
that helps you to evaluate whether it's a reasonable choice for other
people, not just the original poster.
"I have mixed feelings about Linux World, because the issues vary a lot in
quality." -- This is a bit vague, but provides information you can't get
by reading just one or two issues.
In the end, of course, each person does have to make the evaluation for
him- or herself, but others' opinions need not be valueless. A regular
reader can provide information that you can't get from spot-checking a few
issues -- is the quality consistent? Does the magazine run lots of
"theme" issues? Do they re-hash the same stories again and again? Etc.

we are in linux newsgroups. since IE doesn't run in linux, i have a
hard time understanding how i could benefit from it. so IE does a few
things nicer than netscape does. let netscape know. there's not much
we can do about it.

they are if your goal is to run linux. no matter how sofisticated it
may be, software for supercomputers is useless to me if all i have is
a linux box.

I have several Linux boxes running RedHat
6.0. All but one have no problem starting a
Java console or running applets. The one
that does just disappears as soon as the
message "Starting Java" comes up on the
status line at the bottom of the Netscape
window.
The good ones are from upgrading RH 5.2 to RH
6.0; the bad one is from a fresh installation
of RH 6.0. I've checked the Netscape files
to make sure they're the same on all boxes.
What am I missing here? Any suggestions will
be appreciated.

Try running "xosview" and
runing "top". In "top" press "M" to make it sort by memory usage.
On my system:
14.0 MB netscape
11.0 MB X
5.8 MB emacs
1.7 MB xterm
1.2 MB enlightenment
So, I couldn't call it a "hog" by any means.
Though I don't know how much of the 11MB attributed to X is for
enlightenment.
If you can, you might try restarting X every once in awhile (log-out and
back in).
I think it's possible for programs to fail to release memory allocated
through X when they finish. Then you end up with a memory leak.
I think 64 should be "just enough" but if you're doing a lot of
graphics, you might be pushing it. I've got 80 in mine and have been
itching to up it to 128 - prices are pretty low these days. What I
really need to do is up my swap...64MB seemed adequate when I set the
system up years ago with RH4.1 and 16MB ram...

If you've got FAST internet connection (NOT a dialup) installing by FTP
works fine.
I've only done this with RedHat.
For RH6.0 :
First, pick a mirror from http://www.redhat.com/mirrors.html .
You need to make some room on your hd for Linux.
You've probably already got the whole thing allocated to ms-win(s),
so you'll need to shrink an ms-win partition.
If you already have re-partitioning software that can do this, go ahead.
If you don't already have software for this download fips.exe from your
RH mirror
(.../redhat/current/i386/dosutils/fips.exe).
Then use the DEFRAG program included with windows to get your partition
in a state where it can be shrunk (fips chops off the end, so you have
to use defrag to get all the files moved to the beginning).
Run FIPS.EXE and use the up/down arrows to get the size how you want it.
I think LILO (the linux boot loader) will give you trouble if the
beginning cylinder number for linux is >= 1024, but maybe that's fixed
by now ? To be safe, try to make Linux begin somewhere before 1024.
Then grab the rawrite.exe program from the same dosutils directory and
the "bootnet.img" file (.../redhat/current/i386/images/bootnet.img).
Note that bootnet.img is exactly 1.4MB - the same size as a floppy.
What you do here is make a boot floppy by using rawrite.exe to copy the
image file to a flopppy.
"bootnet.img" is the boot floppy for installing via FTP.
"boot.img" is the boot floppy for installing from CD-ROM.
Once you've made your boot floppy, boot from it!
Follow the directions - they'll get you there!
You might breeze through with no problems, but if you do get stuck, the
most common trouble spots are:
partioning the HD and setting up X.
Also, for install by FTP you'll need to know the standard TCP/IP setup
stuff for your LAN (your IP address, netmask, default gateway, primary
name server).
As far as partioning the HD goes, you'll need two partions: root and
swap. I'd put root first to make sure it's below cyl 1024. Allocate a
swap partion of 128 - 256 MB.
Make sure you set it to mount your root partion as "/".
There's two tools offered for setting up the partitions: fdisk and disk
druid.
Pick either. You can back up and choose the other or start over if you
get stuck.
You're ms-win partition shows up here, so be aware and don't delete it
(unless you're ready to toss ms).
If you have a real new video card S3Trio3D or Voodoo3, the X-server that
comes with RH6.0 doesn't really have the proper support. You could skip
installing and configuring X at this point and install XFree86 3.3.3 or
3.3.4 after you've got linux up and running.
3.3.3 is available from the mirror
(.../redhat/updates/current/i386/*.rpm).
3.3.4 is necessary to support the two cards listed above.
You can get 3.3.4 from http://www.xfree86.org or one of it's mirrors.
I've always put 3.3.2 on, upgraded to 3.3.3 and then pulled down what I
needed from 3.3.4.
Durring the X install/config there's a point when it asks you if you
want "probe".
I think it might default to "No".
I ALWAYS pick YES here.
If you don't have a high-speed connection, you definately should get a
CD.
You can do-the-right-thing and buy a full distribution for your first
go-round from a local bookstore for $50-$99 bucks which gets you several
CDs and at least one manual.
Or you can order the $ 1.98 CD from http://www.linuxmall.com or
http://www.cheapbytes.com. The two buck solution doesn't get you any
manual though.
I've installed RH and SuSE (sue-zuh). They're both nice. SuSE is said
to be easier for getting X up and running.

does anyone know if the links in /boot are important? My install made
/boot a separate volume so the RH setup can't access anything in /boot
until well on into the boot process. I think the links are therefore
irrelevant, but can't be certain that someone isn't using them.
I also notice that kerneld etc are still in /sbin. Surely 2.2 doesn't
need these.
I find that a pain anyhow as I would have thought 20Mb is enough for a
minimal root.
RH is a bit like M$ in cavalierly using up my resources.

I think you need to take a look at the man page for gs. I don't
think your syntax is correct for getting the output to the printer.
I don't know off hand what the correct command is. Maybe something
like:
gs -sDEVICE=ljet4 -dSAFER -sOutputFile=\|cat > /dev/lp0 test.ps
On my system with an Epson Stylus 500, I was able to use the following:
gs -q -dSAFER -dNOPAUSE -r360x360 -sDEVICE=stcolor -sOutputCode=plain
-dMicroweave -sOutputFile=\|cat > /dev/lp0 stcolor.ps golfer.ps
Note: The above is one line.

Floppies aren't written in FAT-32; they're written in FAT-12. Windows NT
can handle both FAT-12 and FAT-16 just fine, including VFAT extensions.

No, it's _optimized_ for a 586. It'll run on any 32 bit processor,
even a 386. The stock kernel is built without math coprocessor
software emulation, though, so you need a 486DX or better, or an
80387.
That said, it's difficult to install a small system using RedHat or
Mandrake - you may be better off with Slackware.
