If you want more than two, though, it's probably best to buy one of the
fancy cards that supports lots of serial ports, such as the Digiboard.
These transfer the bulk of dealing with irqs for each port onto the card
itself, which then uses a single IRQ and some RAM to pass information
about which of the serial controllers has data.
Linux supports bunches of those sorts of controllers (Cyclades, for
example, which is the same sort of concept of an intelligent IO
controller, but seems to have a much higher density of ports...)

It doesn't work under dos ... only with a dos program running in windows. If
you double click my computer>control panel>system then click the device
manager tab you will see your modem but above that you will see a device
called a modem enumerator. that takes your modem and steers the com/irq
settings to one that older dos programs can use. If windows isn't running
the system won't even see the modem.

Segmentation violation ... that is a bad one. Since fsck.ext2 runs e2fsck
and e2fsck can require a lot of memory if you've a very large partition ...
how large is it ?

Don't worry. The "failed dependences" indicates you that the package
you are installing requires the other packages or files it shows after
that, like having QT installed before even trying KDE, or GTK with
GNOME.
So, install the failed dependencies first, and try it again. And read
the manuals.

Date: Thu, 10 Jun 1999 17:15:14 GMT
Here the phone co. changes the tone if the line has some special
services to something that sounds like the busy tone, and as such is
recognized by the modem. I found that my modem uses X3 in the init
string to stop waiting for dial tone (X4 in normal conditions). You
can find out in window$ if you have it with dual boot using it's
drivers: in the advanced item of the modem properties activate
logging. This writes all the commands sent to the modem to a text file
in c:\windows\ (i don't remember the name, look in the help). Then
dial. Uncheck the "wait for dial tone" box, an redial. Then read the
log and compare the two init strings. You'll find the one for it.
Now, if you don't have the big bad os and the modem's manual don't
tell you how to do it, call the makers of the modem. Maybe they help
you out.
Hope this helps

And you can boot two OSes at once can you? So fuck NT and lets get down
to some command line (shell) editing on a real OS (Linux, FreeBSD,
OpenBSD, NetBSD, I don't care which). Anything that, for a serer
environment, does not require a laughable GUI interface.

Hello,
My lib-dirs are still stuffed with old .a libraries from earlier days.
How do I know if I still need them? I could of course move them
somewhere out of reach of the binder and wait until some program
complains, but there should be some better solution, isn't it? The same
goes for older versions of elf- libraries. I like my system 'clean' and
coherent!
Another question I have has something to do with this: uninstalling a
slackware package is no big deal, but most applications I run nowadays
do not come from my initial slackware installation. What is the best way
to uninstall applications (mostly from own compilation) that do not
originate from distributions? What is the linux-equivalent of the
Windows-uninstall?
In general: what is the best methodology to keep my system free of
redundant files?
Greetings,

When this error occurs, it is almost always a hardware error! Did you
overclock your CPU? Also check your memory. The reason that this error
comes up when running fsck (or gcc) is that these programs put
considerable stress on the memory and storage subsystems.

There is no standard vi besides the features the original vi had. Elvis and
vim are quite popular in the LINUX community. My suggestion:
Use the vi clone that does what you need (for me it is vim, but thats a
personal opinion) and fall back on the basic features, when you have to
work on a machine with a different clone. If you want to work on various
comuters regularly, there is no reason to stick to the clone provided by
the system, if you want to have additional functionallity - just install
you favorit one.

All of the apache 1.3.6 files are for RedHat 6.0 and they won't install.

Unfortunately for you, you just formatted /dev/sda1 so everything on it
is lost.

Linix-Newbie here, checking everything out prior to the inevitable
plunge. With the open source and different compile options, what's going
to guarantee retail software is going to run from one flavor of Linux to
the next? There's no profit in having to beta multiple OS versions. Maybe
I'm understanding the concept of multiple Linux versions wrong, but how
much of Linux is "Pure, Defacto Linux?"
