Subject: Hosed my pppd
Date: Tue, 15 Jun 1999 02:00:17 GMT
I'm having a problem with pppd that is really frustrating. I had
written a bash script to automate the connection and all worked well.
Then I upgraded to RH6.0 and started using the GNOME ppp dialer, again
working well. Then I crashed X with pppd running and now I can no
longer use pppd. It dies as soon as I start it and sometimes does a
core dump. My guess is that it created a lock file somewhere (I
have "lock" in options) that still exists. Trouble is, I can't find it
anywhere. I searched /var/lock, /dev and just about everywhere else.
Where is it????? Any ideas?
Thanks

Same with the /home directories.
In fact, my YaST on SuSE doesn't allow me to set the filesystem attributes

I was about to jump in jubilation last night when
my Epson Stylus 600 started printing over Samba
in my Linux box. Tried to print the apache test page
of my linux box in my WIn95 client via Netscape.
It was succesful.
I tried to increase the resolution and again it
performed the job as I wanted it to and didn't
fail. I tried to print from MS word and I started to
believe this must be it. It was truly wonderful.
I don't know what have I done when the next time
I rebooted the WIN 95 and tried to print again,
Epson 600's spooler panel now complains:
"Failed to open file"
I tried to print from the command line in my linux
box with say, " $ cal 2000 |lpr " and I can see from
the Epson spooler that the standard input printing
has been queued and it sure prints.
I just can't think of anything wrong with my smb.conf
file because I was able to print earlier.
I checked the printer and it seems to be fine.
Anyone has had similar experience before?

You lucky duck. I'm on the other end of the spectrum, but I've tried both RH
and Mandrake with the same results - junk.
And I'm running a nice Dell 300MHz and sound and video and zip and camera and
modem and CDROM and, and, and
and only one or two things work.

Hi again,
sorry I forgot to tell you, in redhat-5.2 you must create the directory
/usr/src/redhat/RPMS/i686
BEFORE you rebuild the packages.
(Again):
redhat-5.2
rpm --rebuild package.src.rpm --buildarch i686
redhat-6.0
rpm --rebuild package.src.rpm --target i686
May the force be with you

Easy!
in redhat 5.2:
rpm --rebuild package.src.rpm --buildarch i686
in redhat-6.0
rpm --rebuild package.src.rpm --target i686
Enjoy!

Find the script that starts it, and comment it out.
Look in /etc/rc.d and it's submenus
Or, it may be started directly by init, so also check
/etc/inittab

Perhaps it is looking for its fully-qualified domain name.
You can help it by putting the right information in

Subject: 5 printing related questions - need help, please?
Date: Tue, 15 Jun 1999 01:18:48 -0400
Hi, If you can answer any of these questions, please do so. Thanks a
lot! Sorry if it's a lot. I have HPdj 697C, GS version 5.50,
printtool-3.29-3, printfilters-1.46-3, RH5.1
1) in the printtool I can have only 300x300 resolution with cdj550
filter. Is it possible to have 600dpi as my printer's spec supposedly
have for black&white? (I was told providing -r600x600 in gs command when
printing doesn't really do it!?)
2) what is the difference between cdj670 and cdj550 and why cdj670 is
not available with this latest (?)5.50 distribution of gs?
3) does having higher resolution mean spending more ink? if yes, than
is it 4 times more ink for 600x600 than for 300x300 resolutions?
4) at school on Unix I have in my .cshrc file:
alias lpe0 "/usr/local/bin/enscript -2r -fCourier8 -L58 -h -G -g
-pscriptfile.ps \!:1"
alias lpe "/usr/local/bin/enscript -fCourier8 -L75 -h -G -g
-pscriptfile.ps \!:1"
that help me to transfer _plain_ text to ps format with some convinient
details. Is anything like that available in Linux for plain text?
(printtool doesn't do it for the plain text)
5) What is CMY? CMY+K? CMYK?
Thanks! (in your reply add a copy to my [EMAIL PROTECTED], please if you
can.)

Subject: making a iso image using mkhybrid (and getting errors)
Date: Mon, 14 Jun 1999 16:58:11 GMT
Hi, i recently installed suse linux (quite nice) and just tried making
a cd image using mkhybrid (which i have done many times before on
slackware <didn't think it would make a difference> with beautiful
results). When i typed the following:
root|xenonet:/fat32/disks/done>mkhybrid -a -J -r -l -L -v -V
June_bakups_disk3 -o /disk3-iso.img Disk3-bakups/
I got this:
mkhybrid 1.12a4.6
Non-existant or inaccessible: Disk3-bakups/..
Non-existant or inaccessible:
Disk3-bakups/backups_folder1/..
Non-existant or inaccessible: Disk3-bakups/backups_folder2/..
I tried to make an image on another directory on another part of my
hard drive and had no problem (this dir i tested on was much smaller
if that makes any difference) but any time i try creating an image
from any of the sub-directories of this one dir (where i keep all my
backups) i get that error.
Now when i tried to check the size of the dir and its sub-dirs by
typeing:
root|xenonet:/fat32/disks/done>du -s Disk3-bakups
i got this:
du: cannot change to `..' from directory Disk3-bakups/backups_folder1/:
No
such file or directory
i am sure its related but i still have not idea what is causing this
problem.
now it did make an image (and got the same error) and i mounted the
image (haven't tried burning it yet) and *as*far*as*i*could*tell it
looked ok but the error is puzzling none-the-less and i was wondering
if anyone else has run into this problem?

OK, it's kfirewall. I don't know if it handles masquerading, but it

Can anyone offer advice about how to deal with umlauts in Linux? In
particular, I receive some mail written in MS Windows in the German
language. In Linux (set up for US English) those special characters
appear as '?' .
Is there a way to make international characters appear the same in Linux
as they do in MS Windows? Also, I want to be able to write in Linux and
have the characters appear properly in MS Windows. Will switching the
language from US English to German solve this issue? How will that

Convincing everyone I correspond with to use Linux rather that Windows
is not a practical solution (yet) :-( Even I must use Windows NT at the

What distribution are you using?
The gcc compiler is implemented as a C preprocessor plus
a compiler proper, which are invoked by the "gcc" program.
This error message indicates that gcc can't find the
preprocessor (which is called "cpp", as is traditional,
and is usually found somewhere like
/usr/lib/gcc-lib/i486-linux/egcs-2.91.66/cpp). Either you
have not installed it, or your installation is messed up.
(By the way, gcc either [1] produces output for the "as"
assembler or [2] acts as a front end for the "ld" linker.
Thus you will also need the "binutils", which contains
both of these, plus various support files.)

This can be done with a few lines of Perl.
#!/usr/bin/perl
use IO::Socket;
unless (@ARGV > 1) { die "usage: $0 server port request-string\n" };
$server = shift (@ARGV);
$port = shift (@ARGV);
$request = shift(@ARGV);
$remote = IO::Socket::INET->new (
Proto => 'tcp',
PeerAddr => $server,
PeerPort => $port,
);
unless ($remote) { die "cannot connect to server $server port $port\n";
};
print STDERR "trying $server:$port...\n";
$remote->autoflush(1);
print $remote "$request\015\012";
while (<$remote>) { print };
close $remote;
__END__
It can be made shorter, but this is more instructive.

You need a line like
alias char-major-14 sb
in your /etc/conf.modules file. You will probably need to specify the
proper options, too, in the form
options sb io=0x220 irq=7 dma=1 dma16=5
(please alter with the correct values).

The sound business has been reorganized. Now a kernel can be built
with modules for more than one type of sound card.
