First update your kernel to the latest stable version 2.2.18, you can find
it in http://www.kernel.org.
Then configure your kernel and modules. One of the first options on the
kernel is selecting the CPU. I advise you to click on the help button on
every option you choose.
I don't like KDE nor GNOME i think it's a cheap copy of Windows. I prefer
WindowMaker. Why? Simpler, faster and not and original.
Good luck,

Debian it's really easy to install! Just install the base system to allow
booting in linux.
Then run dselect.
Select the packages you want and install everything from the net.
Everytime you want to update your system just select update and install on
dselect.
Anything better than this?

My personal experience is with RH6.2 on a Dell Inspiron 7500, and Suse
7.0 Pro on a Gateway 5300. The Dell was far and away a better machine,
but alas, I had to give it back when I quit that job. I was able to use
all of the components without much fuss - had to download a driver for
the Lucent winmodem, but even it worked okay. Used a 3-Com PCMCIA NIC,
which came up as soon as I plugged the card in. God, I miss that Dell.
I haven't gotten the modem or the sound card working on the Gateway.
No idea what kind of modem it is, but I don't need it anyway. As for
the sound card - a "ESS Technologies Unknown device (rev 0)" - even
the OSS drivers can't convince it to come alive. With the wildly
varying parts used in Gateways, though, this could be meaningless to
another 5300 owner. RedHat is my preferred workstation/notebook distro,
but the installer would simply freeze at the first screen on the Gateway.
Some old co-workers swore by Slackware on their Toshibas. Another
sysadmin I worked with used RH6.x on his various Compaq's without
much fuss.
I highly recommend taking a look at the Linux on Laptops homepage:

Subject: alternative module path
Date: 26 Dec 2000 11:20:03 GMT
Hi,
I need to use /usr/lib/modules as the base path for my modules while /lib
is a symlink to /usr/lib.
If I try to load a module I got the message:
Using /lib/modules/2.2.17/net pcnet32.o
and nothing more.
But if i put the modules under /lib/modules and /lib is a real directory
everything works fine.
So I think i need to change the module path somewhere to point to
/usr/lib/modules instead of /lib/modules 'cause it seems that the kernel
can't load the modules if they are behind a symlink, but i just don't know
where i can set the module path.
Any clue?

Hallo,
for looking if/which modules are loaded type:
lsmod
I wouldn't suggest moving modules around, IMHO experts only, if you insist on
doing, read:
man depmod
(-b basedirectory)
it's explained there...
Good luck

Yeah, NS is a piece of crap/bloatware but you have to live with it,
install a new version of NS, forget about 6, didn't worked
for me, maybe you have to have a 1 Ghz CPU to use it....:-(

I already tried that and it does not work.
I think it's a problem with the kernel itself (tried it with 2.2.11 and
2.2.17).
I have got two identical systems. The only difference between them is that
on one system /lib is a symlink to /usr/lib.
BTW i need that symlink on a rescue cd to minimize the amount of ram for the
initial ramdisk.

Subject: ? Move installed HD to other box
Date: 26 Dec 2000 13:00:39 GMT
Hi,
I've got no CD reader, so I borrowed a box with one, and installed
RedHat 6.2 for my friend, and also a copy to a HD of mine.
Initially I did installs to both /dev/hdaX and /dev/hdbY with one
using floopy boot, and the other using mbr LILO.
When I moved the /dev/hdbY plus its 'matching' boot floppy to
test on a 386 machine (from 486) it had errors ??
So I reinstalled this same HD as /dev/hdaX with mbr LILO booting.
Now when I move this /dev/hdaX to my (hopefully final destination)
486 machine, it again gives the same LI.O.O. garbage !!
When I boot my 486-box via floppy Slakware, linux is at
/dev/hdb2 ? or 3 and try to 'see' the 'new' /dev/hda;
fdisk sees it OK, and /dev/hda1 = FAT16 is mounted OK
(by the previous setup, which had a FAT16 /dev/hda1),
but I can't mount any of the RH6.2 partitions.
---
bash# mount -t ext2 /dev/hda6 /mnt/tmp
EXT2-fs: 03:06: couldn't mount because of unsupported optional features.
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/hda6,
or too many mounted file systems
---
I can mount the one Slakware partition on /dev/hda.
BTW RH6.2 was able to mount a Slakware partition (which I
viewed).
It seems that RH62 can mount Slakware, but not vise-versa ?
Does it matter that the CD and floppies are configured differently,
on the 'run' machine than on the 'install' machine, as far as failling
to boot (via LILO mbr) ?
It seems to crash BEFORE it sees mtab, fstab ?
How can I install on the box with the CD-reader and move the HD
to my box, for use ?
Advice/instructions greatly appreciated, also emailed to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] , in case I miss this Nwsgroup.
Chris Glur.

Us old-timers (from the early 1970s using the UNIX O.S.) insist on it
because, without it, you got no output (or an error message, I forget
which). As time passed, the necessity of -print was reduced (though not
eliminated), but old habits die hard. If you read the first edition of
the manual page, you would see why people, once they found a way to get
the program to work at all, never changed how they did it. Newer manual
pages are much better.

You can understand why I do not accept your challenge. Since it is a
legal program, it is difficult what you expect the "kernel
configuration/compilation" to do. If I were diddling the kernel, I might
have the kernel terminate the processes and delete the lines containing
wroot from the /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow files
I have run on a version of the UNIX Operating System that could handle
it, because it always kept one or two process table slots free for the
superuser who could get in and kill something like that. I have no idea
if Linux permits that, and do not care to try it.

Only an idea:
as i understand that little program will fork itself again and again and
breaking than the system.
I think the right ulimits will stop that.
It's a similar problem like the "yes 'yes'" one.

Since I run GNOME/Enlightenment instead of KDE my situation is not
identical to yours. But the same problems exist even when you are not
shutting down the system; that may be a red herring. When Netscape
crashes, the symptoms can be:
1.) The program just exits, and has already removed ~/.netscape.lock.
2.) The program just freezes and you cannot get it off by clicking the
little x at the top right of the window(s). If you right-click the
little x, the windows vanish, but the program is gobbling up an awful
lot of CPU time. You must kill it with a -9, and remove the lock file.
3.) Same as 2, but the mouse is not tracked, so you can do none of that,
nor can you get into an existing xterm to kill anything. In this case,
pressing Control-Alt-F[1-6], logging in as whoever started Netscape, and
killing it with a -9 will be the way to go, if you can do it. Sometimes
you cannot.
4.) Same as 3, but the Control-Alt-F[1-6] sequence gets no response. In
this case, Control-Alt-Backspace will sometimes get you out of X and you
can login again and fix things up.
5.) Same as 4, but Control-Alt-Backspace does not work either. If you
have the luxury of being on a network, you can ssh into your machine and
fix things sometimes, but
6.) When none of these work, you can assume you machine has crashed and
you must hit the panic button. This has happened to me only about twice
since May 1998.

Well, I sort-of have a 1.1GHz CPU (2 550MHz CPUs running SMP), and I
think Netscape 6.0 still stinks. It is fast enough, but that is about
all. Crashes much more than Netscape 4.7 series up to and including
4.76, features missing, confusing human interface reminding me of AOL,
etc. (The version of 6.0 I got direct from Netscape as an RPM, perhaps a
month ago, I no longer remember.)
