Andy are you sure that you are starting in the correct run level, should be
5?
When you boot Linux it tells you something like entering run level 5. Don't
ask me where to set this, I don't know of hand and I lend my
book to someone and haven't seen it in 4 weeks.
Good luck.

Well I would rather use Linux for our fileserver than Netware or NT.
From what I have read it seems that there are somewhat reliable RAID
drivers for Linux (in 2.2.x at least), reliable enough that many people
seem to be using them and various distributions such as Red Hat
advertise it as one of its key features. But if software RAID support
is not as stable as you seem to be implying then thats something Linux
needs if its going to be considered a legitimate player in the
fileserver arena.
Anyway the 250gb RAID I mentioned was just the scratch/temporary
filesystem, no backups will be kept of that one and if it fails i'll
just rebuild it, no problem really. It will be a RAID0, just striping.
The RAID that needs backups is the main file server, ~50gb, and I'll
be using RAID5 for that one and I will be keeping backups with multiple
tapes on my DDS3 drive just in case of multiple disk failures.

Some (all?) JetDirect cards ignore information to suppress
header/footer/burst pages and print them anyway. After you
try :sf: in addition to :sh:, if it still doesn't work, you
need to telnet to the JetDirect box and disable the burst
page there (follow the instructions in the help screen).

hi folks,
I just have bought an HP Pavilion vith an intel 810 graphical chipset...
I have 2 partitions on my HD, one for Win98 and the other for ... Linux.
The linux distribution I had before I get this computer is the RedHat
5.2 which doesn't want to recognize my motherboard. I'd like to know if
the last version of the kernel ( 2.2.3 methink ), and, say, the RedHat
6.0, will work with my system.
I've ( not that much, I'll accept the blame ) tried to search info on
the internet, but I didn't find anything satisfying.
Thanks in advance.

The `jed' editor is also nice.
It's pretty lightweight (compared to emacs, that is), and can emulate
a couple of popular editors, under which Wordstar key bindings, which
are popularized by the Borland IDE's.
But make sure to get the 0.99 version. It sucks far less than the 0.98 version,
but 0.98 is still included with some quite recent distributions.

Hi,
I have tried to setup a raid 1 (2 scsi disks) as root file system,
but it won=B4t work.
1) Installed everything (suse 6.2) on a third disk (sdc1).
partion setup for the raid disks is
sda1 -> /boot (20M)
sda2 -> part of raid ~ 4.3M
sda3 -> 128MB swap
sdb looks the same (sdb1 not mounted).
2) setup lilo to use /dev/sdc1 or /dev/md0
3) installed a new kernel 2.2.12 and the latest raidpatch
and raidtools (0.90 24-Aug).
4) compiled a new kernel and installed it -> works for /sdc1
5) setup raid1 on md0 (sda2 + sdb2) and made a copy of the
system disk on md0. Changed fstab on md0. changed partion id
to fd.
The kernel do not start the raid on booting (/dev/md0).
What=B4s wrong ? =
Any help will be welcome !!
Has somebody or can somebody build/send me a kernel which
will boot from /dev/md0 ?
I need only support for Adaptec 7xxx and tulip.

'at' is handy for one-off jobs; it takes as an argument the date/time that you
want your command to execute. After execution, it wipes it's schedule (assuming
that the executed command didn't invoke 'at' again).
If you are looking for a method to execute commands in a regular, repeating
schedule, look into 'cron'. 'cron' (and it's schedule editor 'crontab') are used
to build schedules (systemwide and/or per-user) of repeating tasks, like "run
the backup script on every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday".

try to boot the kernel from a floppy somthing loads but the vdu goes black

Has anyone else had this? Is the linux kernel conflicting with something

Subject: Question
Date: 2 Sep 1999 08:40:49 GMT
Ok.. got a (possibly) very newbie question. I have two Linux
machines. Both are on different domains. One has Linux 4.2, the
other has 6.0. I use (from a third-party site) the 4.2 box as my
smtp server for sending mail, and it works fine. When I try to use
the other machine, it doesn't. Error message says something like
could not route, or something.
Question, is there something I need to ask my ISP to add in the DNS
entry for the new machine? Or is there something I need to do
locally, to allow it to be used?
Appreciate a quick answer.
Thanks

Subject: help me, can't get my data out of the zip file!
Date: 2 Sep 1999 01:08:33 -0700
please help me.
I zipped all my data on Linux into a huge zip file, the file size is 1.93 GB,
then I ftp'ed the file (binary) to another PC. Now when I try to unzip
it, I do not get all my files back out, only about 40% of it (800 MB), and
then the unzip stops. I even tried it with winzip, the same thing. No error
shows up either.
But when i try it on Linux, I see this error:
"did not find end-of-central-dir signature at end of
central dir". at the end of the unziping (after it extracts about 40% of
the data).
Now, I spend alot of time researching this on the net. It seems
the directory inside the zip file is somehow corrupted, and it only
see part of the files inside the zip file.
I know I did a binary ftp. so the problem seem to be becuase the file
is large. Linux has a problem with files around 2GB since that is
the max it can handle on intel.
I know my other files are still inside, I can do 'strings' command on
the file, and see my other files names listed. but when I unzip, they
do now get out. I can not even do unzip and select one of those files
that did not come out, becuase I get the above error.
Is there any way to fix a zip file directory? I have all of my life
and most important data in this zip file and I have no idea how to
get my files out. I thought about building the linux unzip program in debug,
and step through it untill it get to the stage it stops, and may be hack
something. I have all the zip related info about its data structure and
the zip file structure.
any ideas? any tools that can help with this? I tried few unzip utilities
and they all do the same. only get out about half of the files. Any
commerical places that may be can restore this?
thanks !

Hello out there,
I have a question about NETSCAPE 4.6 / 4.61 and JAVA. On some (not on
all!) of our computers (we run linux-RH6.0) Netscape freezes when I open
the URL
http://www.stadtplandienst.de/query;ORT=b;LL=13.420389x52.54105
with JAVA enabled. Without JAVA there's no problem,
I read about the wrong fontpath-settings, but this does
not seem to be the problem, since chkfontpath --list prints:
Current directories in font path:
1: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc
2: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/:unscaled

I just re-tried it -- doesn't work for me. I get the last thing that was

Just re-tried it again -- and got it to work. Seems I had to do a cut and
past in WP8 first to release whatever it had in its paste buffer first.
After that I was able to paste in from an xterm window. Weird, but I'm
happy it's working.

I found this at www.redhat.com support with a search on LILO. Hope it
helps
LILO failures (L, LI, etc problems) (REF#990500-0006)
Description:
'At boot time, LILO fails to work properly, giving an
error such as
only printing an ''L'', or ''LI'', etc.
'
Solution:
'
If you have rebooted the system and have gotten a "L",
"LI", or a combination of
this and a lot of scrolling numbers, this indicates that
LILO is having a
problem bootstrapping itself due one or more problems.
Write down the error codes that are being printed and what
letter it stopped on
(L, LI, LIL, etc). Then check the lilo documentation to
see what this error
seems to indicate.
Most of the time, the LILO failures are due to the BIOS
and the hard-drive
mismatching geometries or something similar:
- First the kernel (or parts of it) are above the 1023
cylinder so the BIOS can
not bootstrap the information. If your BIOS has the
capability to use LBA
(Linear Block Addressing) mode and it isnt already
enabled, you should enable it
and then re-run lilo (either by reinstalling or using
rescue mode).
- If you can reinstall and add more partitions, create a
/boot partition and
place it entirely below the 1023 cylinder.
- You have placed the kernel on a drive the BIOS can''t
access. This can be an
IDE drive that is not on the primary chain (IDE0 hda hdb)
or if you have placed
Linux on a SCSI drive it is because the SCSI ID is not 0
(or 1 if you have NO
ide drives in the system).
If you need to gather more information for someone else
(either for official
support or from the mailing lists, news groups, friends,
etc) you can use the
rescue mode
Insert the installation floppy and at the boot prompt
type:
linux rescue
After a couple of screens that ask about hardware you will
get a root
prompt (#). You will need to mount the linux root
partition like is done in
this example which has the / partition as /dev/hda5
mkdir /mnt
mount /dev/hda5 /mnt
Then do the following:
lilo -v -r /mnt
You can add more -v''s if you need more information.
