After exchanging hardware parts with another machine it turned out
that the Intel Pentium II MMX 450Mhz CPUs (two of them) were
malfunctioning.
So at last it was no linux problem.

I had exactly the same problem last week with my new PC, I was
thinking that the Ram was bad but it was the CPU voltage.
2.2V -> 2.3V was the solution.
But for a detailed description of many causes for sig11, take a look

According to my 5L manual, all three lights means a hardware error that
requires calling HP support. This doesn't sound like a Samba-related
problem: what happens if you print directly from the Linux machine?

NT, secure? That's a good one. <G> Check out http://www.l0pht.com and
http://www.nmrc.org for information on the 'security' of Windows NT. A
big part of the problem is that NT 4.0 uses a strong password hash (MD5,
I think) and supports mixed case, but supports old authentication
methods that are uppercase only and are easier to break - and NT can be
tricked (under certain conditions - esp. the *default* setup prior to
any service pack being applied) into divulging the password in plain
text on the wire.

Based on my knowledge of NT's security, I would agree with the other guy
here - they don't know what they're talking about if they think NT is
secure. I'll grant that NT security is better than Win95/98/DOS, but
that's about as far as I'll go unless you're willing to remove the
network card and all rewritable media drives (floppy/cdrw/etc) from the
system and use NTFS. But making these changes really limits the
functionality of the system, IMO.

I have two problems since upgrading to the 2.2.x kernels.
I am using Debian 2.1 with Linux Kernel 2.2.9
1. On one machine I have an Atlas 24x CD-ROM drive. The problem here is
that Linux does not detect when I insert an audio CD. I have to attempt
to mount the drive before I can play the CD with a software based CD
Player. I have also recieved the following errors when attempting to use
a CD player.
CD audio: ioctl error on /dev/hdc: cmd=CDROMREADTOCHDR errno=5
CD audio: ioctl error on /dev/hdc: cmd=CDROMEJECT errno=95
2. On a second machine, I have a NewComm 33.6Kbs Fax Modem. This is an
ISA plug an play modem for which I have set up the isapnp package and
setserial correctly for. The problem is that the first attempt to dial
the modem I get a NO CARRIER signal or chat will just sit there until I
send it a SIGTERM. The second attempt always dials correctly. I do get
the same problem under Minicom.
I never got these problems with the 2.0.x kernels. They did not show up
until I upgraded. So if anyone knows what might be causing these I would
greatly appreciateany suggestions.
Thanx in advance,

While I can't offer any advice on your particular make/model of machine, I
will tell you is that you do _not_ need to keep reinstalling the
OS. From your description, you are using the graphical login (runlevel 5).
A better idea (especially when having display troubles) is to set the
machine up for console login (runlevel 3). That way not only can you confirm
that it is indeed X that is the problem, but you can reboot your machine
easily into a useable state.
That being said, you can avoid re-installing your current setup by
booting into single user mode (by, e.g., typing 'linux single' at the LILO
prompt), and changing the runlevel in /etc/inittab to 3 (look for the
line 'id:#:initdefalut:', where # is your current default runlevel). Then,
when you reboot, you will be in console mode and able to tweak your
X configuration and get it working *without* reinstalling the whole damn
OS.
Good luck.

Maybe I'm talking nonsense here, but try to replace cua0 by ttyS0.
By the way: do you really use cua0 for your modem? Usually there's a
mouse connected to that port.

If all they're wanting to do is a CYA maneuver, why encrypt the code?
Why test for stuff that Windows itself doesn't need? You say that you
think it was removed, well, if the AARD code was so darned innocent, why
remove it? It was disableable, you know? Usually, you don't make ANY
significant changes between the final beta version and the release
version. I've been in situations where a customer wouldn't even let me
change the version number to remove the beta indicator.
No matter where you stand on this issue, I think you can agree that
reasonable people might conclude that Microsoft certainly acted guilty, in
this case, whether or they were guilty of any untoward behavior or not.
