why don't you provide us with your lilo.conf file? OTherwise there could
be many things wrong but yet we don't know b/c we don't know how exactly
lilo is configured. The layout of your partitions would also be helpful.

Hi,
I have a two harddisk stripe running fine under 2.2.18, but none of the
current 2.4.0 test or pre kernels like it very much.
After booting the 2.4 kernel, 'mdadd -a' complains that
/dev/hde1 and /dev/hdg1 (the partitions to be striped) don't exist,
even though fdisk -l lists them both. Stracing the 'mdadd' command
showed that the open("/dev/hdx1') commands did indeed get ENODEV errors
returned. This behaviour is consistent with the Raid options compiled
in or as modules.
I'm quite stumped at the moment, as I do not know where to look next.
Is this behaviour known? Can anyone give me a hint at what I may be
doing wrong?
Regs,
Sven

Subject: Linux stucks on M700 when XF86 4.0.1 is running
Date: 1 Jan 2001 19:06:11 GMT
Hello,
I have installed Mandrake 7.2 on Compaq Armada M700 laptop. My M700 is
Pentium II 366 MHz, 64MB RAM, 24X CDROM model. The VGA is ATI Rage
Mobility.
XFree86 4.0.1 works good with my laptop. It automatically probes my
VGA and LCD, and I can use X without touching /etc/X11/XF86Config.
The problem is my laptop completely stucks after leaving my notebook
10~15 minutes. The screen is blank. Keyboard and trackpoint does not
work. There is no response of 'ping' to laptop. (So I cannot telnet
to my laptop.) Moreover, even the power switch does not work!!!
If I left my laptop with console mode (using Ctrl-Alt-F2 or something
like that), it does not crash. But the following error messages are
displayed every 5~10 minutes.
apm: set display: Interface not engaged
I have look through the linux kernel source. The message is come from
arch/i386/kernel/apm.c . But I cannot understand why this message occurs.
Does anyone give me the hints or solutions of my problem?
Thanks in advance.

Ok.. Thanks..
I thought that the inode usage was dependent on number of files,
regardless of size. How can I have a 1GB partition, but only be able to
fill it to a certain point? Too many large files? Too many small
files? Is there some way to increase the inode count that is available?
Thanks!

I meant, authenticating via PAM when using the Windows 2.4 client,
with the SERVER running RH7
PAM authentication works fine when using a linux client. That [the
linux] client alows you to set the authentication methods, the
Windows client doesn't [seem to] have this??

There was a bug in logrotate which would make backups of all files in
the /var/log/mail and /var/log/news directories on Mandrake 7.1
You would find thousands of empty files in there. Check your /var/log/*
directories to see if this has happened to you.
Go into the logrotate.d and make sure that there is not any
/var/log/xxx/* or /var/log/xxx/yyy*
in any of the files, as this tells the system to make backups of all
files, including backups already there. This will double the number of
files every week and as anyone know, an exponential function gets very
very large quickly.

The bug in logrotate would fill up with 0 length files. They take up
very little space, but run out of filenames (inodes) spaces. The number
is of inodes is more than sufficient for any reasonable useage. You
almost certainly have this unreasonable useage problem.

I've never seen it done under Linux.

Hi
I would like some help with routing ipx thought my linux box! The
system i have is debian 2.2.18 and is working on tcp/ip routing and
also the net being shared. In the linux bor there is a eth0 10 base t
network and eth1 on 100 base t. The reason i want ipx to be routed
between 10 and 100 is so i can play games across them, Most of my games
use ipx not tcp. Unforunatly the person that set the linux box is
unavible to do the ipx and also has no idea. my knledge is very limited
and i can just about navigate around linux. Any one that can help me
with this would very muchly be appreashited. On the linux box /proc,
ethernet, and ip support isinstall and also the ipx daemon is installed
but no commands because they wont compile for some reason.

The software product Typhon (www.unixscripts.com) contains over 100 portable
Korn shell scripts for text processing, file and directory processing,
customizing your login environment, disk space management, performance
analysis, system monitoring and system security. It includes generalized
login environment files for the Korn shell, bash and the C shell.
Some functions of Typhon:
* Substitute one text string for another in all files in a directory tree,
skipping non-text files. The substitution strings can be regular expressions
or plain text.
* Display all subdirectories as a visual directory tree.
* Copy a file to multiple remote hosts, with disk backup of the target file on
each host.
* List all subdirectories in one or more directories, including symbolic links
to directories.
Typhon is distributed as part freeware, part commercial. You

Ok, that was DEFINITELY the problem. I have millions of files in there.
Now when I try to do "rm * -f" it tells me "rm: Argument list too long".
What should I do??
I have tried going back one and doing "rm -d mail" (as root) but it
won't let me.
Thanks!

software design can be done using any number of software development
techniques. One of the main objectives of current software design is to be
non-language specific. Then the design can be brought to light using any
language to enable the design. Of coarse during the design progess a
language or languages is choosen that best meets the project objectives and
needs. So i can design the "tax rules" (probable set up for me by tax
accountants) using software design methologies (flow charts etc) and then
for example give it to a programming team using C++ for example and also to
a team using delphi and I should get the same results. So I would not jump
to conclusions based on them looking for people who are capable of working
in in C (all programming is logic, but I think I know what you are getting
at with your quote, and you have a valid point). I am sure the C guys will
not be involved the top level business rules phase (unless they have
expertise to offer in this area). They will be given designs for units to
code, within the overall project framework. In any major project there is
always need for a bit of C! I make a great living coding in C and yes my
knuckles do drag on the ground when I walk ;-).
That said I have to agree that taxes and such would make a great
product/service for online delivery thats non-platform specific. And since
tax rules are always changing it would make sense to have this application
on the server side where it can be kept updated. These are the type of apps
that make sense as a service (unlike a word processer for example).

There are several possible answers, but the one that springs to my
mind is
find . -name "*" -exec rm {} \;
DO NOT USE THIS without care, because it's just as dangerous as "rm
*".

Well, I ended up doing an "ls > out" and then getting info from that
file to delete the files by section, so that I could remove them :).
I went from 128k inode usage to 13k.

Has anyone gotten Redhat Linux 7 to work with Matrox AGP
G450?
Everything installs and it sees my video card and monitor,
but
it will not give me more than vertical lines or "out of scan
range"
messages on my monitor (a Sony E210). I downloaded the new
driver
from Matrox with no luck. Redhat 7 uses Xfree 4.01.1. I
checked
the monitor scan rates from the specs and have used every
permutation
of scan rates and monitors. No luck.
Is there any way I can get it to start in plain VGA?
