If it is like the 100M drive with the same parallel port <=> SCSI hack,
the Zip drive should work just fine.

Good enough to get everything running. And, again, they
warn that the CD-ROM installation is the _easiest_. And, is not
RedHAt even more CD-ROM-oriented?

It suffices to find the packages you want (e.g. emacs, tex, ppp),
and they will suck in the dependencies as well.

AFAIK, all Acer's 56K _ISA_ modems are true modems (with the
"truest" being FM56-ITU/2 ;-).

Best,

- IOMEGA Zip 250 parallel drive.
- WACOM tablet.
- Western Digital 13.1G HDD.

Yes it is. I can connect to it using "psql", but when I try to connect to it
using the
"rst-jdbc", I get a "connection refused"

When I try to telnet to it, i get a connection refused. When i do
"netstat -a", I don't see anybody listening to port 5432. What is the
problem? And how do i know which port it is listening on?

You can also simply delete the "lock" from the
/etc/ppp/options file.

I think you should probably leave the locks file in
/var/locks alone. The system is supposed to lock and unlock
files and resources on a demand basis, and (I may be
mistaken here) the lock file is where the system keeps track
of what is locked at any given moment.

Yes, I tried several disks, all had the same problem.
I've used the regular mount command with -t ext2 or -t msdos. I've
also used mtools (mdir, mcopy).
I ran a test program which writes, reads, and checks data over
and over, but it won't detect errors; maybe due to the buffer cache.

There was a change in ide-floppy at 2.0.36 to limit the max sectors
to 64 for a specific ZIP firmware level. I don't have that level,
but I was going to try to limit it anyway, just to see what happens.

In the meantime, if you use your ZIP for backups or archiving, I
urge everyone to check the data after writing, using cksum or cmp.
Also check your syslog for errors. I have gotten the error logged
sometimes without finding corrupt files, but I have never had corrupt
files without the error.

It is backwards compatible with the 100M. It can read the 100M disks, but
does this mean the driver can be the same ? I doubt it.

Make sure you start postmaster with "-i", else it doesn't listen
to TCP/IP port 5432, so you get "connection refused".

The whole thing is laid out in the copious docs supplied with Postgres.
You are investigating the innards of a Unix socket. You need to have a
TCP/IP connection.

Here's from the HOW-TO:
=======
Preparing the Database for JDBC

Because Java can only use TCP/IP connections, the Postgres postmaster
must be running with the -i flag.

Also, the pg_hba.conf file must be configured. It's located in the
PGDATA directory. In a default installation, this file permits access
only by UNIX domain sockets. For the JDBC driver to connect to the same
localhost, you need to add something like:

host all 127.0.0.1 255.255.255.255 password

Here access to all databases are possible from the local machine with
JDBC.

The JDBC Driver supports trust, ident, password and crypt authentication
methods.

You'll have to set up sendmail properly. You probably want the
'genericstab' feature so that your envelopes are rewritten to use a
proper address.

But it's true.

Then, again, SuSE isn't Linux either, nor is Slackware, nor Mandrake,
nor Debian.....

Linux is just the kernel: RedHat is the packaging of a stack of
applications, an installer, a book, support, a pretty box, and
distribution channels along with that kernel.

Linux itself isn't very useful (you'll need much more than the kernel to
boot :)).

RH is not Linux: they may have a few kernel developers on the payroll,
but they don't control it. (And from all appearances RH doesn't seem to
influence their kernel developers much at all -- Alan Cox seems to work
on whatever he feels like that day.)
