=================================================================
This is the Linux Counter summary as of Tue Feb 29 17:09:23 2000
There are 137615 persons registerd.
3097 users have been registered by friends.
There are 73668 machines registered.
I guesstimate that between 0.2% and 5% of all Linux users have
registered with the Linux Counter.
So the total number of Linux users is probably between
2,752,300 and 68,807,500 people.

Ok, how bout if I make it harder. I don't have room on my machine to
even extract the source tree. Everything was compiled on another
machine that I don't have access to. If I get just the ne.c file can I
compile just that?

_Lions' Commentary on UNIX 6th Edition, with Source Code_ is available
from Peer to Peer Publishing:
<http://www.peer-to-peer.com/catalog/opsrc/lions.html>
It describes UNIX Revision 6, which vastly predates SVR6, and is an
interesting book.
I once used it to validate that the "stat" structure hasn't
substantially changed in 20 years, and was able to usefully disagree
with someone that found what they thought was a bug in Solaris
behaviour, thinking that there was a recent behaviour change. I went
back to Lion's, and validated that "UNIX has *ALWAYS* worked that
way."

Assuming you have properly set up to run without kde/kppp you can
try ~/sbin ifup ppp0. ftp and lynx will work without X, assuming,
of course, you've set them up. One should not depend on anything
"windows", X included. In linux, the command line is always there.

Well, it depends on what you do in Windows, and whether or not there are
corresponding Linux apps. For the "average" user, who mostly uses his
computer to surf the web, use email, and write and print letters and other
documents, all of these things can be accomodated well by Linux, and for
free. Nescape Communicator is just like it is in Windows, and there are
several excellent word processors available, including Wordperfect and
Framemaker. GIMP is an excellent Photoshop clone, with 90% of the
functionality, and 0% of the cost. There are some simpler financial
programs, but as yet there's nothing quite like Quicken. What do you need?
If you're using Redhat, install using the "workstation" option. A Windows
user should feel most at home with KDE, so select that as your desktop. If
you don't have a boxed Redhat set with the documentation, most of it is
available online at www.redhat.com. Read up a bit, follow the directions,
and away you go.

Hi, could anyone help? i keep getting a "Segmentation fault" followed by
a core dump during installation of my staroffice. I downloaded the
application in separately in 7 modules and untar in a home/user
directory. After running ./setup at command, the above error appeared.
Is there a way to decipher the core for some clues?
I'm using RH6.1 on a Pentium 90 (overclocked to 100mhz) with 48M ram.
Any help appreciated and thanks in advance.
