Did you compile your new kernel with module version information? It may
be listed as "Set version information on all symbols for modules" in the
loadable modules section of xconfig or menuconfig. I'm thinking that the
linmodem driver was specifically built for the 2.2.5x kernel, in which
case you'll need version information to tell the kernel that its for an
older kernel version.

Subject: Controlling Linux internet connection from M$ Windows?
Date: Mon, 05 Jun 2000 00:22:39 -0600

Ok, so far I've tried connect, dialmon, masqdialer, and dialcontrol,
but none of them do quite what I want. I have a normal 56K modem
connection to the internet (no isdn, cable, etc) through my linux
box that does ip-maquerading for three windoze 98 clients. What I'm
really looking for is a program for windows that would act like the
normal DUN, but would use the modem on the linux box instead of its
own. It would have to have the same features (autodial, holding
packets until the link is up so programs don't time-out, showing
what's going on when connecting, and preferably an icon in the tray
showing traffic that's coming and going across the internet link).
But since I really doubt a program like this exists I'd settle for
something similar to the packages I've tried, but with better
connection info (especially when dialing/redialing) and usable with
pppd's autodial feature. Does anyone know if programs similar to
either of these exist or are under development? Autodial wouldn't be
so bad, but when my ISP's lines are all busy whatever caused the
connection attempt usually times out and then I can't tell what's
going on! Especially annoying when it takes ten minutes of constant
redialing to connect to my ISP! Any pointers to good programs or
other ideas for controlling the link are welcome!

You could try 'stty sane'. Not sure if it helps when your text is colored
blocks, but it does work when an svgalib program leaves your text
invisible.

Yes, but gzip is a whole different animal. Gzip/gunzip are used as
replacements for the traditional unix 'compress' program, i.e., they
compress/uncompress a single file (such as a tar or cpio archive).

Zip/unzip are pkzip/pkunzip near-clones. Fully compatible at the
zip-file level (except they don't currently handle archives split onto
a seeries of loppies like the PK versions do) though the user interfaces
differ somewhat. The best part is it's free, you get the source, and it
compiles virtually anywhere.

Dialmon gives diald status if you open the window. On my ISP 'most'
applications causing diald to bring up the link don't time out.
Occasionally IE5 does but you just press the reload button.

With diald you can adjust the timeouts for different type of net traffic
;-)

You can if you open the dialmon window as it shows what the link is
doing. Also you can adjust the time diald waits before retrying -
somewhwer in its configuration.

> redialing to connect to my ISP! Any pointers to good programs or
> other ideas for controlling the link are welcome!
If your ISP is that bad then I suggest trying another. I occasionally
get a 'bad' modem which won't play and sometimes the number fails to
connect at all (gives 'Number Unobtainable' rather than 'engaged').
Usually less then 3 times a month (I log it to a web page on the machine
as we get some unmetered access for a fixed fee and keep track of useage
to avoid paying any more) and the link is brought up at least once a
day.

We are using a few HP Jetdirect. One problem I see is that when it
it is busy printing it will not anwer any status or cancel commands
from the LPR system. Therefore lpq will appear to hang.

I wonder if there are any print server boxes that is able to answer
printer status query while it is busy printing. The query is
meaningless, of course, because the box won't queue any requests
anyway, but the lpd system will send the query anyway as if the
printer server was a real spooling system.

As far as NT (at least version 4) is concerned, DumpEl (from the Resource

might want to use Blat.
