Unfortunately, it seems to become more and more common among
commercial software vendors to ship their Linux software in rpm format
only. If you're concerned about the security and integrity of your
box, this means unpacking the package without running any script, and
then manually figuring out what the scripts would do. I've done this,
it can be very time consuming if the installation scripts are
relatively complex.

When it comes to security, one cannot be paranoid enough. :)

Of course it isnt anything to do with Perl but I think that you might
either want to replace that "\n" on every row with "<BR>\n" or use
a list as Bart suggested .

Encarta is a Microsoft product. They can edit it as they please.

Hi,
i have a problem with the system.map running different kernels.
The problem is that i use two version of the same kernel
one with only EIDE support and another with SCSI support.
Why the System.map files is now (with kernels 2.2.x)
strictly required ???
There is a workaround for this ?
Thanx in advance,

If you go to ftp://ftp.gtk.org, you will find the files there. I

I don't have any use for it because it doesn't do the operations I most
frequently use in my own directory editor (manipulation of arbitrary
lists of files and interfaces with RCS and SCCS).
(It's fine for people who make casual use of a file manager - however I
am not impressed with the fact that it only builds with gcc)

hello,
i have a few odd looking entries in an ext2 filesystem as follows:
d--Srwxr-- 21588 19796 18464 168640076 Dec 18 2001 ebaypix.jpg
br-s--xr-x 21573 29283 19772 97, 108 Jan 15 1977 ebaypix1.jpg
?--x--S--x 23328 21071 12334 1329799202 Aug 21 2027 ebaypix2.jpg
these are kernel log messages that i believe are related while processing
these files:
Jun 24 23:45:55 xxx kernel: attempt to access beyond end of device
Jun 24 23:45:55 xxx kernel: 08:12: rw=0, want=1953391989, limit=3935925
when i try and remove these files i get an "Operation not permitted" error.
i have tried
umounting the filesystem and running fsck, but it says there is nothing
wrong.
does anyone know how to force fsck to do a low level check, or how to
modify
these files into a form that will allow access to remove them. thanks in
advance.

How about 'ps -aux |grep cron' and you'll see if cron is running. In
Solaris it'd be 'ps -ef |grep cron'.

I can't vouch for your particular system, but I've never worked on a system
where cron has died. As one of the oldest, simplest and most robust of the
system utilities, I no more worry about cron dying than I do inetd. JMHO.

I rather think that what has happened instead is the oft-described situation
of working hard on making the tools work, and then not having the energy
left over to fully document what they've done.
Of course, there is hopefully a light at the end of the tunnel, which RMS
would likely regard as an oncoming locomotive, seeing as how an O'Reilly
book is supposed to be coming out pretty soon on DocBook and Norm Walsh's
DSSSL stylesheets. <http://nwalsh.com>
Seeing as how this isn't "free" documentation, some will not approve, and
the release of it by O'Reilly after the Perl "Debacle" (Tom, you're
*intended* to laugh at this one...), this probably represents further
gasoline on the fire.
Oh, well...
