Hi!
Do you know any spreadsheet app, that beside ran as usual spreadsheet app,
can also run 'faceless': accepting input from and sending output to other
program / script.
It can run either as a batch application - called by a script - or as a
faceless server. Or are there other possibilities?
Obviously the model should still be editable using GUI interface, either
that program itself or other spreadsheet program. Excel compatibility will
be nice.
TIA.

Sounds like what you want is a package called svgatextmode. It's included in
most Linux distributions.
Hope this helps.

I noticed a similar difficulty with a cronjob I have that uses "lynx
-dump" when I upgraded a system to RedHat v6.2. Apparently something
has changed in recent versions of Lynx that demands more tty capabilities
than previous versions did.
Two things you can do:
1) Find an older version and use that. I did this by simply
using the RPM for Lynx v2.8.2 from RedHat v6.1.
2) Write an Expect wrapper program for lynx. Expect can provide
Lynx a pseudo-tty environment to run under that'll work when
run from cron.

Your ISP is responsible for the news server you use. The messages would
be kept for a longer time if your ISP wanted to. It's not our fault :)

Why not just write tab delimited files? or comma-separated? Call the file
something.xls and the bozos using MS will know how to handle them.

Well, I just wanted to pass on the news that I've tried the new kernel
v2.2.16 nad I have the same problem. Also, to ask if anyone has come
up with any kind of a solution.
I haven't been getting all the responses on my news server BUT I do
use Deja News to catch up every so often. Just to quickly answer some
of the other queries:
I am using a Creative RW6425E (EIDE) drive. I have obtained and
compiled cdrecord V1.8a29, the newest as of a month ago.
I compile my own kernel and I followed the instrictions from the
newest CD-RW How To, which has changed a bit since I originally
implemented the CD-R in my machine in kernel V2.2.12.
Also, I'm very certain its not a hardware problem in my drive or
computer as I can dual boot back into kernel V2.2.13 and all works
just perfectly. Kernels V2.2.14, 15 or now 16 all exhibit the problem
outlined below.
I even tried forcing the old 2.2.13 module to load under 2.2.16 kernel
BUT there have been some significant SCSI interface changes since
2.2.13 and it just core dumps!
Any and all questions, comments, ideas or solutions would be
appreciated. I would like to get a newer kernel working in
preparation to the jump to the V2.4.0 jump.

The ISP wants to be able to automate the whole registration process, very
Laisse-Faire. What I'm looking for is something that a Linux user can
download from the ISP website and setup the account "that night". AOL use's
the technology in all those worthless disks I get in the mail every month
(coasters). You just pop in the CD and have your credit card number ready and
follow the on-screen instructions and within 20 minutes you've setup an
account. I doubt that such a user-friendly application exist under Linux but
I wanted to put it out there none-the-less just to see.

Subject: Scripting woes, need help.
Date: Tue, 13 Jun 2000 00:43:53 GMT
I have been working on this script for
a week, posting questions to the newsgroups, linuxnewbie, and question
exchange. I have recieved many helpful
suggestions (none of which have been
the same!) But I am frustrated, I have been so close to getting this
script to work. What I have now almost works...
ALMOST.
I need to take all the files (based on
-ctime) from /home/ftp and place them on a separate FTP server, the
script to follow should do this: except for
the find command!
Thats what is holding me back.
#!/bin/sh
cd /home/ftp
{
echo
date
dest=/tmp/backup/`date +%A`
mkdir $dest.new
find . -xdev -type f \( -ctime
1 \) -exec cp -aPv "{}"
$dest.new \;
cnt=`find $dest.new -type f |
wc -l`
if [ $cnt -gt 0 ]; then
rm -rf $dest
mv $dest.new $dest
fi
rm -rf $dest.new
ncftpput -u USER -p PASSWORD
FTP.SITE /home/george *
} >> ~/backup/backup.log 2>&1
What I find in my backup.log is this:
find: missing argument to
`-exec'
./ftpserve:
/tmp/backup/Monday.new: is a directory
bin is a directory.
ncftpput: file send error:
could not open file.
etc is a directory.
ncftpput: file send error:
could not open file.
lib is a directory.
ncftpput: file send error:
could not open file.
pub is a directory.
ncftpput: file send error:
could not open file.
I just need to get the files in the
directories recursively, and I cannot get the find command to do that.
God knows how many versions of different
scripts I have tried!
I *HAVE* to use ncftpput to upload the
files (yes I know the password is cleartext, but I am not the admin of
the servers where the files are to be
uploaded to).
Now, if I can do that, (and get the
exec to work again, it used to) then I can change this script to search
for certain files in certain directories and
I will be done.
So, in a nutshell what I am asking is
how do I get find to:
1) find files recursively in the
/home/ftp directory.
2) exec the cp command (I know the
arguments)
And thats it! Once I have that my
script should work. The solution should be easy but my brain hurts from
thinking on this for too long.

Is the machine handling lots of users, or a few users who check their
mail quite often? If so, you might be hitting inetd's 40 connections
per minute limit. If this is the case you will see log messages about
"respawning too fast" and the pop service will die for 5 minutes.
The limit is there to limit the impact of DoS attacks, but it is
adjustable. You probably have a line like this:
pop3 stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/tcpd ipop3d
Change it to something like this:
pop3 stream tcp nowait.100 root /usr/sbin/tcpd ipop3d
The number is the number of connectins/minute you want to allow. Then
"kill -HUP pid-of-inetd" to reset inetd.

In WFW3.11, if you slave your ATAPI CDROM to the hard disk,
you cant use high speed (32 bit) disk access. I don't know why this is,
maybe an addressing issue, but the important thing is, is it the same for Linux?
