Aparently some adaptec controllers have a chip
set that will not work on linux, I belive that
one of the howtos list controllers and chip sets
that will work.

I wouldn't suggest newbies from an M$ background download a distro and
install it.
Use a prepackages distro like RedHat 5.3 or SuSE 6.0. They both come
with 400+ page manuals and do a good job of explaining how to load and
run their systems. I use SuSE and prefer it for three reasons: It has 5
CD's which include the OS on one Cd, a live system on another, and the
rest have a bunch of the latest files, apps, demos, etc, from the
internet. Saves lots of download time, and you always have a bootable
backup. Secondly, KDE 1.0 is installed automatically. Thirdly, their
system tool, YaST, is superb for adding or removing apps and changing
the system configuration.
IMHO.

Every time i start KDE i get an error message that says:

cannot find mime type
application /x-tgz
in /opt/kde/share/applnk/Utilities/kzip.kdelnk

I can't find the file referenced, and I'm not sure if this a missing
file or a filename typo.

I had seen an earlier post on this indicating the problem was a typo
(x-tbz instead of x-tgz) but the directory with the KDE apps in it has
no file that matches either pattern.

BTW ... I have KDE 1.0 (RPM version for Red Hat)

Yes, and this fix does work. But when I applied it (`patch sb_card.c
diff') I got an error message for the second part of the patch.
However, I was able to compile cleanly and sound does work.

I, too, must question why this was released with such a glaring error,
when no such error existed at least up through -pre8. I compiled
- -pre1, -pre2, -pre4, -pre6 and -pre8 with the same parameters and
without problems. How could they have been messing around with it and
not tested the end result?

Date: Tue, 26 Jan 1999 00:32:35 GMT

Need some help getting 2.2.0-final running properly on my RH5.2
system. I have downloaded the sources and the kernel compiles without
any problems. It loads up with the following error message in
/var/log/messages:

klogd 1.3-3, log source = /proc/kmsg started.
Jan 25 16:03:33 titan kernel: Cannot find map file.
Jan 25 16:03:33 titan kernel: Error seeking in /dev/kmem
Jan 25 16:03:33 titan kernel: Error adding kernel module table entry.

About the only thing affected by this is the compressors for pppd.
Everything else appears to work just fine but when I start up pppd
I get complaints about loading the compressors but otherwise the
connection works just fine.
I have read just about everything I can think of in the documentation
but I haven't found anything regarding this problem.
I have tried re-locating the System.map file to / and have also fooled
around with rc.sysinit to see if I could duplicate the normal startup
with a 2.0.36 kernel. No luck.....
Any help would be appreciated.

I'm trying to upgrade my hand-upgraded RHL4.2 system for the 2.2 series
kernel and can't seem to get util-linux2.9g or h to build. It dies for
me consistently trying to build ipcs.c:

Either something else needs to be updated, or something else is broken.
This is the last thing listed in Documentation/Changes that I need to
update, and the newest thing I can find (which I have but haven't
installed) is a contrib.redhat.com 2.5 RPM, which doesn't sound like it
will cut it, especially if I want to the new mount or mkswap.

Does this lead anyone to understand what's going wrong?

When I built 6.0.192 on my SuSE 5.3 box, I had to change the line

"LNKFLAGS = " "LIBS = -lncurses -ltermcap"

...although I have to confess that this is unlikely to have any effect

Even Portmonsters can be configured to autodetect PPP, and most are
configured that way because of the Windoze stupidity. (At the time
that Win95 came out, there was a huge push to add and enable
autodetect everywhere, because ISPs who didn't would not be listed in
MS's book of "compatible" ISPs. At least that's what the Bay
marketing folks told us ...)

You're right, though, that all ISPs are subtly different. Your
mileage will vary. Not chatting, though, is a good rule of thumb
these days.

I personally would not reccomend that a total newbie upgrade to 2.2.0.
It is not ready for people who are not experienced Linux users until it
becomes the standard kernel in an easy-to-install distribution.

Linux tries all sources to try to resolve a name for any remote=20
connection. So you might just be giving up before DNS times out. Try=20
adding a name for each IP in /etc/hosts and likewise in \windows\hosts=20
so you can access the Linux box by name and connections will come up=20
quicker.

Also certain commands, like 'who' will be much more responsive if you=20
do NOT list any nameservers in resolv.conf that are not currently=20
connected. I have resolv.isp and resolv.local that I cp into=20
resolv.conf from ip-up.local and ip-down.local.

Your X server is probably suid root, or is run by an suid root program
that gets the necessary permissions to access the video hardware and
then drops root priviledges. X clients only need to talk to the X
server, which doesn't require any special priviledges.

_Libraries_ can't be set to run as a particular user. You can set all
of your SVGAlib games to run suid root and then be able to run them as
a mere mortal user. This may be (probably is) a security risk which
you may or may not be willing to take.

There is a problem if you don't compile the sound support as a module.
However you can solve the problem by looking into the file

/usr/src/linux/drivers/sound/sb_card.c

and move the line

int esstype = 0; /* ESS chip type */

before the line

#ifdef MODULE

so the variable is defined outside the module declaration. Recompile and it
should work.

Hope that helps
